We acknowledge that no one has the bandwidth for this, but if it helps: -It’s ‘sleight of hand’ -It’s ‘bated breath’ -It’s ‘lo and behold’ -It's 'buck naked' -It’s ‘brass tacks’ -It’s ‘free rein’ -It’s ‘toe the line'

I *only* know "hp" as the abbreviation for horsepower. Never heard of the other one.

“an interesting linguistics find! so I’m reading this text from 1908 and it keeps referencing ‘hp’ in the context of ‘not being at full hp’ ‘applying your full hp to a task’ etc.” But it’s not hit/health points… [allthingslinguistic.com]

Google is not the final arbiter of map data. They can call the Atlantic ocean "Albert" if they wanted to. This is only a story insofar as it demonstrates that Google has discovered a limit to its acquiescence to the whims of the administration.

“.. According to Trump, Pichai responded: ‘No, no, no — this time I’m not doing it… Oceans are different, sir. They cover really a lot of countries. Please don’t ask us to do that.’” @variety.com $GOOGL variety.com/2026/digital...

"You could call all these claims tech optimism or, as the famed venture capitalist Marc Andreessen wrote in his 2023 manifesto, necessary for the 'glory of human ambition and achievement, the spearhead of progress, and the realization of our potential.' You could also call it speculative fiction."

I wrote about watching You Can See Everything at a moment when the tech industry has really adopted a zealous, faith-based approach to the future and who’ll get us there. It’s about the cult of the builder, vc betting and the problem with ‘never wrong, just early’ www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

Something I haven't seen mentioned about You Can See Everything: Why, as she heads to prison, is Elizabeth Holmes suddenly wearing a small but conspicuous cross around her neck?

Also: In the past E.H. said repeatedly that her goal in life was to be "a billionaire." (Not a scientist. Not an entrepreneur. A billionaire.) So why is she now saying that money means nothing to her? New goals?

Mr. President, our state is not yours to rename. Our history is not yours to erase. Our culture and identity run deep, shaped by generations of New Mexicans long before you or the U.S. were here at all. We are proud of who we are and where we come from. Because we are New Mexicans.

I liked "The Testament of Ann Lee," but I had a credibility crisis when one character, in 1760s England, gave a distance in kilometers. The metric system was invented in France in 1790. The UK finally began adopting it in 1965, although it had been used in trade and science since 1864.

Just one data point, but there was a block-long line last night for the opening of You Can See Everything at Berkeley's Elmwood Theater. The show was scheduled to start at 9 pm; the audience would get out around midnight. (I plan to see a matinee next week.)

"Enshittifying its product to try to make its expenses cheaper did not work, according to a narrative filed in bankruptcy court Tuesday."

Character.ai’s bankruptcy is the one of the first dominos to fall in the long-foreseen AI bubble. Read the story here: https://www.404media.co/character-ais-bankruptcy-documents-show-the-economics-of-ai-dont-work/

A new thing that I hate: I’m reading a book right now that uses endnote citations, and directs the reader to SCAN A QR CODE to access the endnotes.

i think about The Shmoo all the time. the human mind was altered the day The Shmoo was created, and we can't go back.

Nancy Friedman@fritinancy.bsky.social

Is there a direct line from Li'l Abner's Shmoo to Meta's Muse? fritinancy.substack.com/p/word-of-th...

"Shmoon — the plural of Shmoo — were 'cute bowling-pin-shaped creatures that breed exponentially, consume nothing, and eagerly provide everything that humankind wants'.” Also: "Give Muse a goal or task and it handles the rest."

Could it have been edited out? Maybe. But I think for these educated, cultured people -- several of them born in the 19th century, all of them dressed elegantly for a gathering in Duke Ellington's house -- profanity was simply unthinkable in polite (and mixed male/female) company.
