There’s an uncomfortable truth underneath all the elaborate AI safety research: Our tech reflects us. AI does it on steroids. If we want our AI to align with our nobler goals, then we’re going to have to reckon with aligning ourselves with the better angels of our own nature.

The tech industry just married itself to a paradigm that relies on cogent, well-structured, rhetorically convincing natural language, hyperawareness of social context, abstract thinking, and deep qualitative analysis skills. My hot take is the humanities are about to thrive.

Happy for the new pope and all, but no one seems concerned about the smoke coming from the Vatican? I feel like the Sistine Chapel being on fire should be a bigger story???

We. Need. Basic. Research.

The Human Genome Project cost taxpayers $3 Billion. Two decades on, it has generated a staggering return on investment of $1 Trillion, with benefits in medicine, agriculture, energy, the environment, & more. If you want to boost the economy, funding science is one of the best things you could do.

You know what we do when this happens? We give them away for free

It was never just about schools, it was never just about libraries, and it isn't actually about the books. It's about finding a way to banish entire people, entire ideas, out of society, back into the closet or worse. www.chron.com/politics/art...

One more rant before I go walk the dogs. 🧵 There is a certain Type of Guy (person, I guess technically, but almost always a guy). You ask this type of guy about politics & they'll tell you they're independent, an iconoclast, & that "both sides" are silly & blinkered & don't see the big picture.

Isn’t finding “probable cause” for contempt but not imposing it basically counting all the way to three and then just giving a stern look because you ran out of numbers?

Ok, NOW it’s totally the bottom though, obviously. If not that would just be crazy, right

Today: ok, he’s definitely got it out of his system now and 100% change his tune and literally everything about himself and what he believes. time to buy the dip

Our country is now run by the “You should’ve filed a ticket” people. Which is deeply ironic

#BREAKING: 5-4 Court, with Barrett joining the three Dem. appointees in dissent *vacates* Chief Judge Boasberg’s temporary restraining orders in the Alien Enemy Act cases. Judicial review must be available, Court holds, but has to come through habeas petitions: www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/24p...

Masking discourse is on again and I’ll just say if you see people masking when few others are it’s likely because they’ve determined that for them, in that setting, the benefit of not catching (or spreading) whatever’s going around is worth the cost of masking. It’s rarely more complicated than that

You’re absolutely right. You’re absolutely right. You’re absolutely right. You’re absolutely right. You’re absolutely right. You’re absolutely right. You’re absolutely right. You’re absolutely right. You’re absolutely right. You’re absolutely right. You’re absolutely right. You’re absolutely right.

I do think many are seeking catharsis in these times by making fun of neurodivergent traits. That is not the way to be better, friends. You have *so* much else to work with here.

This is horrible to post, but I may as well post it. We are essentially shutting down research operations in my group, which is focused on treatments for pediatric brain cancer. I’m a well funded investigator, and there’s no choice. Science can’t function without the stability of NIH

It’s obvious that many right-wing commentators simply have no idea what they’re talking about when they attempt to characterize “woke leftism” at universities, but at least some must know better and spout nonsense anyway.

I actually *majored* in liberal arts, and I believe China is one of the most significant threats the free world faces today. I formed that opinion by reading literature taught by liberal arts professors.

Higher ed in the US has been calcified by an administrative-industrial complex that has systematically dismantled its own societal mandate, and ironically, it’s now being punished for it

Columbia's Provost evidently sent this message to faculty forbidding them from moving classes offline or canceling them amid ICE activity on campus.
