Thinking again about how the true final boss of Armored Core 6 was the universe's saltiest man and the Tiktok TTS voice doing a fucked up bickering Gurren Lagann bit while beating your ass

Tonight's book club meeting discussed The Wind's Twelve Quarters, a collection of short stories be Le Guin. Some of these I had read before, some of them were new, and rather fatefully it contains The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas. Which is as good a reason as any to link some of my work:

thegreatsurf.comthe ones who fly away — The Great Surf“Hello!” says the dock officer with a winning smile. “Welcome to Omelas!” “Thanks so much,” V.V. says, matching his energy and handing both their passports up. “It’s great to be … here?” Siri has hi...

implementation problem with DC statehood is if you make the city a state, where do you squeeze in the much smaller, less important city that is inexplicably the state capital

my favourite thing about resident evil/biohazard is one of its titles has that cool, weird, kind of oblique vibe you get from a JP title with an english name, and the other title has that much more ordinary and marketable feeling you get from a 'good' localisation, but they're the wrong way round

if someone tells you that it's possible to take a quick break from your main draft to write up something fun and easy as a change of pace that person is lying to you, they are trying to do you real damage

the 'badly run forum' problem raises it's head again in that the dox-and-harass-irl guy is banned but nobody has any idea if it's permanent or not, which is quite important

Wrote this article for Phantasm Arm yesterday while stuck on the phone for an hour listening to my dad go on about how his water rights have been stolen by the blueberry industry (don't ask). It's maybe a little low on context but it got a good review so I'm sharing it here.

Because Ace Combat is back I am once again sharing my work as that is a series that has been zooming around the interior of my skull for decades and which has been a major influence on this setting.

After long fallow period RECORD BREAKER was the first piece of complete, full length fiction I could actually post. There was a bit of irony in making an author's website then losing the drive to post writing, so this was a milestone. Love that it's 10k words of people moving in straight line lol

'literacy crisis'/'taught to guess at words' type-posting getting over the hump to becoming a way to swaddle dismissal of substantive disagreement imo. broadly similar process to what happened with 'gaslighting' but with an intellectual rather than personally moralising tone to fit the era

compare the american usage of 'entrée', which is bizarre in terms of meaning, yet ultimately is just using a fancy word for a different element of a fancy ceremony. the question is entirely academic. but the usage of 'biscuit' is visceral.

'social media sites are big forums': banning an account shouldn't hide it by default, and the duration of a ban should be public 'this account won't be posting for bit due to this spicy joke I can see' and 'this account suddenly vanished arbitrarily' are very different experiences

it is ridiculous to whine too much about eating a brief ban for an edgy death threat joke. post with honour. conversely it is not ridiculous to be alarmed about journalists being shut down on petty or no pretext. default socmed policy is basically designed to make the former look like the latter

they're going to keep stripping names from him until he's referred to only by description but they'll still never let him see the inside of a courtroom

arXiv will no longer accept review articles and position papers unless they have been accepted at a journal or a conference and complete successful peer review. This is due to being overwhelmed by a hundreds of AI generated papers a month. Yet another open submission process killed by LLMs.
