The net zero transition has the potential to create up to 40,000 more energy jobs than will be lost, but leaving it to market forces will fail workers. We need a proactive green industrial strategy backed by effective labour market planning. www.futureeconomy.scot/publications...

Governments can watch as the sector continues to shed jobs - despite new licences - while oil and gas companies work to maximise profits. Or they can choose to provide a meaningful roadmap for workers and communities; one that delivers a genuinely sustainable future. Me for LBC:

If the UK and Scottish Governments are serious about avoiding the mistakes of deindustrialisation, they must develop and implement a proactive green industrial strategy, backed by effective labour market planning.

🔥 New fossil fuel developments carry significant climate risks. The decision to green-light Jackdaw will breach safe climate limits. Expanding extraction is incompatible with the emissions reductions needed to secure a safe future for generations to come.

🌱 There is a viable alternative — but it requires action. Our analysis identifies that with strong ambition and targeted policy, the net zero transition has the potential to create up to 40,000 more energy jobs than will be lost.

👷 Further drilling cannot secure the future of North Sea jobs. Our research found that employment in Scotland supported by the oil and gas sector fell by 32% between 2014 and 2023 — a loss of 34,000 jobs — despite hundreds of new licences being awarded during that period.

⚡ Jackdaw won't protect households from high energy bills or meaningfully improve domestic energy security. Oil and gas prices are determined by international markets, leaving households exposed to volatile fossil fuel prices.

📉 The North Sea is in structural decline. Production has fallen by 75% since its 1999 peak, driven by the depletion of reserves, not climate policy. New drilling cannot reverse the structural economic and geological realities of a very mature basin.

There is an increasingly disingenuous narrative peddled in Scotland about the impacts of granting new oil and gas licences on North Sea production levels and job security. Amid this, it’s important to look at evidence 🧵

This week I gave evidence to the Scottish Parliament' on the sustainability of Scotland's tax and spending plans. A short snippet below on why the government should not just invest ScotWind revenues strategically through a wealth fund, but also take public equity stakes in future ScotWind rounds.

More than 75% of planned ScotWind capacity is owned by parent companies outside the UK. Here our economist @jujupepe.bsky.social gives evidence to the Scottish Parliament on how Scotland could capture more of the wealth created off our coast to secure long-term returns for the people of Scotland.

Scotland’s offshore wind is one of our greatest national assets. Tomorrow, Audit Scotland will report on how the ScotWind leasing round was run - putting fresh attention on who stands to benefit from the wealth our offshore wind creates.

Scotland’s new Programme for Government offers the clearest picture yet of the Scottish Government’s plans for the next five years. While there was much to welcome, Scotland’s looming fiscal gap was the elephant in the room.

Decisions about how to close budget gaps, and who will bear the costs, are political choices, not fiscal inevitabilities. How the Scottish Government responds to its fiscal crunch will shape Scotland’s economy for years to come, and lessons must be learned from austerity.

Our latest blog by @miriambrett.bsky.social sets out an alternative: raising revenue, strengthening public sector capabilities, maximising returns on public money, and enhancing borrowing powers to build a greener, fairer and more resilient Scotland. Read: www.futureeconomy.scot/posts/652-cl...

Scotland’s new Programme for Government offers the clearest picture yet of the Scottish Government’s plans for the next five years. While there was much to welcome, Scotland’s looming fiscal gap was the elephant in the room.

Real-terms capital budget reductions and planned reductions to the public sector workforce are coinciding with increased need for a step-change in public spending and investment – all while operating in a constrained fiscal framework with limited borrowing powers.

Drilling in Rosebank and Jackdaw will not deliver energy security or an economic boost for UK households. Our latest @futureeconscot.bsky.social blog argues the North Sea is in long-term decline and only a rapid transition to green energy can deliver a prosperous, resilient future.
