At a Boston Red Sox game in 1973, with Bill "Spaceman" Lee on the mound, Richard Nixon caught a foul ball. Barely able to mask his disgust, he threw the ball back onto the field, muttering that he "didn't want a souvenir that had been handled by a fucking communist." #trickydickpics

leave it to colonoscopy prep to make me pine for the halcyon days of the 2.5 decades i spent without health insurance.

like some bastard child of Sisyphus and Comic Book Guy, I am condemned to be forever wiping grease smudges off my glasses.

i know #books and #literature aren't exactly everyone's foremost concern right now, but if you feel like supporting a non-profit indie publisher that has puts out some of my favorite books (and a slew of other really good books), give Dzanc Books a look. www.dzancbooks.org/membership

last night, i went to siphon some more ebooks and was SHOOK to find the website down. "Is Dzanc dead? Did I singlehandedly kill them by only paying $300 for what at this point must be at least 40 books?"

fortunately, this morning it came back up - and with expanded options for donations/support/purchases (that I quickly availed myself of, both out of relief and to assuage my panicked guilt). tl;dr - if books are your cup of tea, i think you'd like Dzanc.

a few years back they had an (absolutely mental) offer where for $100 you got access to their ebook catalogue in perpetuity. i bought it, and started tearing through their offerings. eventually, i started to feel bad about being some sort of literary labor vampire and gave them some more money.

my inner monologue is incapable of saying the name Nicolae Ceausescu in anything other than the "let's get ready to rumble" guy voice.

'The Thought Gang' by Tibor Fischer What happens when philosophy meets bank robbery? My sell for it: just read the first page. I knew I was going to adore it immediately, and I think you'll be just as tickled by the first page (and the rest of them) as I was.

honorable mentions: 'A Confederacy of Dunces' by John Kennedy Toole 'My Year of Rest and Relaxation' by Otessa Moshfegh 'Kamby Bolongo Mean River' by Robert Lopez 'All my Puny Sorrows' by Miriam Toews 'Dear Committee Members' by Julie Scumacher

'The Archive of Alternate Endings' by Lindsey Drager I lied - this one isn't funny, and it's a bit experimental - but I know you'd appreciate the humanist messaging, it's beautifully written and cleverly constructed, and it's my favorite book ever. Her other books are terrific as well.

Literally anything (seriously) by Percival Everett. 'Percival Everett by Virgil Russel' is my favorite, but I'd start with 'Erasure' or 'The Trees' or 'Telephone'.

'Everything is Illuminated' by Jonathan Safran Foer. This book is absolutely heartbreaking, but is equally hysterical. It tops my list for you based on your penchant for wordplay, as Foer manages to push the english language beyond its breaking point in hilarious fashion.

'Slumberland' by Paul Beatty A hallucinatory send up of hip hop, jazz, the end of the cold war, and race relations. I should recommend 'The Sellout' by the same author, as it is more widely read and I'm reasonably certain you'd like it, but 'Slumberland' is one of my favorites so it gets the nod.

Richard Nixon gives a rambling and largely incoherent speech to members of the 1st Infantry Division in Vietnam. #trickydickpics

Speaking at length about scenes from the movie 'The Big Red One' without ever actually mentioning the film, Nixon repeatedly referred to how "Lee Marvin stabbed those fuckin' Krauts," to the bewilderment of the men around him. It was later revealed that he had contracted malaria. #trickydickpics

Richard Nixon appears in the ill-fated Army film 'So Betty Won't Bounce: A GI's Guide to Masturbation After Becoming a Casualty of War.' #trickydickpics

Though he spoke glowingly of Haile Selassie at the state dinner, Nixon's duplicitous nature was later revealed and recorded by the White House taping system. A portion of the recording was worked into a song by Propagandhi, and provided the title 'Haile Selassie, Up Your Ass.' #trickydickpics

Though some artistic license was taken, Richard Nixon's resignation speech was the inspiration for the closing scene of Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Said Nixon, "I now know why you cry. But it is something that I can never do. Goodbye." #trickydickpics

"You actually played a concert inside a prison? Goddamn. I'll never set foot in a prison, isn't that right, Gerald?" #trickydickpics

Among the many benefits that assuming the Presidency conveyed, Nixon believed that the ultimate was "not having to smoke that goddamn Mexican ditch weed anymore." #trickydickpics

Richard Nixon watches video of Chicago Police beating a young boy in Grant Park outside of the 1968 Democratic National Convention. #trickydickpics

As Sammy Davis Jr. watches, President RIchard Nixon signs legislation that bars discrimination against bisexual African-American Jewish little people. #trickydickpics

Richard Nixon and Elvis Presley seal their historic accord. The 4 hour summit resulted in an agreement that "pastrami is pretty alright," and a promise from the President that he would do his best to procure a microfiche of all the known ludes dealers in the greater Memphis area. #trickydickpics

But I'm a Committee for the Re-Election of the President I'm a weirdo What the hell am I doing here? I don't belong here #trickydickpics
