I think Marxists should be intensely interested how a handful of extremely dedicated cranks arguing on blogs managed to gain control over all productive investment of the US economy in just a few years

some may point out that militant utilitarianism gained traction in part due to its substantial overlap with dominant neoliberal ideology, which Marxism cannot count on. To them I say, "that's why we keep the analytic marxists around"

I "AI-proofed" assessments by having students take exams rather than write essays at home. The exams are open-book, open-note, but only paper copies (no screens). Now students are coming to class with printed out articles full of notes and highlighting... the world seems a bit brighter

My department (Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam) is offering a brand new MA in Digital Investigations, focusing on digital methods and OSINT relevant to journalism and human rights investigations. It looks very exciting! www.uva.nl/shared-conte...

uva.nlMaster Digital Investigations (Media Studies)The Master's in Digital Investigations trains you in contemporary methods and techniques for public-interest investigations in fields including journalism, public policy and advocacy.

it's cheesy but I think about the Sun Ra line "there are other worlds they haven't told you about" all the time... one of the best reasons to write is to tell people about the other worlds they don't know about yet

It would be nice if the future were going to be like Star Trek: fully automated space communism for scientific purposes. Instead it seems more destined to be Star Wars: janky AI and robots on ruined worlds where cults battle fascist empires

Have some upcoming work travel to the states, and I was thinking of getting a Covid jab at CVS or whatever, because it’s completely unavailable in the Netherlands. But concerned it will knock me out for the event that I’m doing…

Images from 2028 when Taylor declares a mea culpa when Bari Weiss’s poisoned chalice doesn’t help her keep her thermostat at 90 degrees

Wow….wild to hear Taylor say she’s glad Elon took over Twitter and that it’s better than ever. I mean, the unconstrained growth of the far right on there? Musk’s thumb seemingly on the algorithm’s scale during elections? The impact on democracy?

In my day, you could get a lot of mileage in a graduate seminar just by saying “but what about individual agency?” One time I got so annoyed by someone doing this that I said “Look, individuals have no agency, let’s move on”

Wrote a chapter on machinic vision and labour in a new book edited by, among others, @routhier.bsky.social . It was fun writing about digital surveillance, online job hunting, invisibilized digital labour, etc. The book looks amazing and it’s all open access! direct.mit.edu/books/oa-edi...

For my money, this graf is the most revealing in offering an explanation of the real function of all this AI dooming: they've vastly overestimated the potential of current transformer architecture and need regulatory capture to save them from their more sensible Chinese competitors:

more and more I think of the covid pandemic as a crisis in giving a fuck

one for the "cognitive deskilling" files (from The Economist's FB account). surprised both by the pace of the decline and that math and reading scores seem to move more closely together than math and science scores, though I'm not at all familiar with this test and what it asks students to do

I dug into the Netherlands results yesterday... one stat that surprised me was the percentage of parents who ask their kids about school at least once a week. dropped from 80% to 60% in 3 years
