I joined the Midjourney discord back when it first started up when a few of us were like hm, what's this? I asked it to draw the Hubble Space Telescope. It did not know how to draw the Hubble Space Telescope. I left after a few tries.

When Adobe started up Firefly I tried it a few times. I tried many different prompts to get to to draw an orc. It did not know how to draw an orc. I don't touch these things anymore. That's about it.

@bowlerhatscience.org omg, reading this story, with the author carefully teetering into the "lol is he gay?" territory with quotations and uncomfortable accounts of reactions to his speeches... No. He's sizing them up like horses! eugenics! MATTHEW I SEE IT NOW www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...

theguardian.comWhat’s up with Trump’s unhinged fixation on male candidates’ bodies?Trump’s latest tactic to champion Republicans at midterm rallies? Assessing men’s bodies in meticulous detail

I think in the past I probably would have just shrugged and gone along with the author, problematic as it is to try to "out" even this vile human as gay. like ok whatever maybe he is? or bi? the simpler explanation is the guy is just revealing a eugenicist mindset. leave the gay people out of it...

I put an updated version of this image up over at Flickr. Should be easier to see the details in the bright center, now. Sometimes I feel like a work is never truly done until a couple months later when I am able to see what final small adjustments it needs. flic.kr/p/2swHfCQ

flic.krLion2026 Oct 06: Updated with image that improves visibility of details in the brightest parts of the central nebula. It's planetary nebula time again! I never could pass one up. I especially wanted to d...

I do hope that one day it won't feel like writing a low-quality satirical or sarcastic reply is just adding to an already oversaturated spot. it used to be fun and funny here and there. now it's just... yeah, we don't need more of it

it seems that if you peruse an Escher book as a bedtime book with the kid, it just gets his mind going and he can't go to sleep because he's imaging impossible waterfalls and whatnot

Been trying to get HPV for years. Surprised me this morning when the pharmacist noted I was due according to some kind of health guidelines in their system. Not sure what happened, but I'll take it.

my kid drew a volcano instead of characters from knuffle bunny and is in trouble for not being on task, but part or most of me is not disappointed

much to my dismay the dishwasher completed its cleaning cycle and did not stop smelling like the stinky cheese container I put in it (the stinky cheese merely touched the container, it was not still present)

Fun time. Here's H-alpha from Hubble, and its infrared analogue Paschen-alpha from JWST. If you look closely in the center near the star, you can just make out the front and back of the nebula moving away from each other. It's not flat!

I upped his playtime for the Playstation so he can continue to joyfully ignore grandpa's very annoying, repetitive suggestions (grandpa always wants everything his way. he will keep telling you something until you finally do it, because physical assault is the only other way to shut him up.)

It may seem like I'm very mean to grandpa. I can only assure you that I'm actually way nicer to him than he deserves. Everyone's got a family member or few like this, right?

so it's been a while since I've actually zoomed in and analyzed one of these stsci press release images, but I was curious today mainly because I don't know how my low-level processing is holding up, and to my amusement I think noise was *added* to this lion nebula image

which, to be clear, and I think I have mentioned it before, but I've done this. why? because when you've got a bunch of different resolution imagery crammed all together it looks dissonant. so you wrangle it all together, smooth the crap out of it, and then ... re-add the noise.

anyway, I could also be mistaken about the image. It really looks like it to me, though. and it's hilarious to add noise to an image in a field that is constantly banging its collective head against a wall over noisy data.

astronomy cringe: "lion nebula" does not resolve to ngc 2392 but "[slur/offensive word for Inuit people] nebula" still does, or at least whatever service MAST is using does.

searching for "lion nebula" on the internet pulls up the wikipedia article titled with the previous name. come on, you can switch pluto and get everyone saying 8 planets, so go ahead and fix some other things while you're at it
