My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

Standing belief: a critical number of 2024 voters were just like, "Well, everything was was better in 2018 so why not bring him back?" This would have been kind of understandable if you'd fallen into a coma in 2019 and woken up Halloween 2024 and missed everything in between, I suppose. However...

my god

Currently setting up/working on an ancient-cities list. Done: Teotihuacan, Rome. Potentially soon: Athens, Kyoto. Someday: Tangier, Macchu Picchu?, Cairo, Bodh Gaya. Much further out because of reality: Jerusalem (and the entire eastern Med basin, really), Tehran (damn you, David Frum).

Armond White reviews are their own form of postmodern art, but even accepting that this one is a barnburner from go and just gets lairier from there.

"Tank" was also a fair description of the rest of the car around the motor and cockpit; the /30 carried ~105 gallons of gas to feed that ravenous flat-12 through the roughly two-hour races.

Standing naked in my bathroom this morning about to step onto my fancy body-composition scale and thinking well, okay, yesterday was mostly good except for a few drinks plus a couple of Mom's world-class gingersnaps but I drank plenty of water! and I'm like Fuck me I've turned into Bridget Jones.

For the completely unnecessary record: 213.4 pounds, which has been mostly steady for the last week or so and down 33 from my post-holiday high back in January. Big gripe: Not getting enough exercise with the school schedule.

If my Photos app/accessible photo library/Bluesky connection was working properly I'd be posting a batch of slightly wonky photos and video clips from Lime Rock (gripe: camera autofocusing on guardrails instead of the track) on a lovely autumn day for the VSCCA season finale.

Tech aside, it was wonderful to get back up there for the first time in far too long. Had a pleasant chat with @vintageracer.bsky.social, discovered that Lancia Fulvias do have small but usable back seats, if someone saw me sticking the brim of my cap in everyone's car I was studying pedal spacing.

Need to schmooze the provost about promotion to associate professor and/or figure out a side gig. Racing has been a part of me forever and it's a tragedy that I haven't been able to make it a real part of life.

Anyone who describes either my conversations or especially my sexual activity (as someone middle-aged in what amounts to a two-decade-old marriage) in these terms will need to have their own conversations with a doctor soon after the next time we meet. Ouch.

“Talking to Rahm, it’s like middle-age married sex,” said John Anzalone, a Democratic pollster who has known him for decades. “It’s focused. You know what you’re going for. And it’s short.” www.nytimes.com/2026/09/26/u...

For a bunch of masculinity-obsessed alpha dom wannabes these guys sure do love to lean on whiny pathetic hollow excuses.

NEWSNATION: Gas is $4.47. Diesel is $6.50. Mortgage rates are above 7%. Inflation is at 3.4% while earnings are lower. How are you making the case that that is the golden age? RNC CHAIR JOE GRUTERS: Biden left us an absolute disaster. We just gotta give him more time NN: Is that really the pitch?

I have no idea if the linked article is the reality-based journalism it is portrayed as being or a Haruki Murakami-esque short story. I do know that it does not make me feel good about modern life or the future.

Rationalists sometimes like to deny that they're hugely intertwined with the current big-money big-tech AI scene, but like, they do come out and admit it a lot, as famed rationalist blogger Scott Alexander did in this 2026 Harpers piece: harpers.org/archive/2026...

We had a legit first-gen Macintosh, the 128K version, that Dad bought from someone at his machine tool company for what still feels like a disturbingly high number of 1985-1986 dollars. It was used for many school papers and Flight Simulator sessions until the board died in mid-1991.

The old internet@theoldinternet.bsky.social

What was your first computer growing up?

To be fair that price included an equally first-generation Apple Imagewriter. Tucked in my mess of a personal archive I still have a few high school papers that in their dot-matrix approximations of fonts feel like handling the Dead Sea scrolls.

Japan remains the most non sequitur but lovable country on Earth.

Mondo Mascots@mondomascots.bsky.social

Ya-ya-nyan, the mascot of Owase City, is a welcoming cat whose clothes celebrate Owase's nature, culture, and fishing industry. The name "Ya-ya" comes from the unique "Ya-ya Festival", where people dress in white and fight in the streets. Ya-ya-nyan’s special skill is being able to sleep anywhere.

Maybe the world is nudging me towards being a conspiracy freak, but: We sure this was done "accidentally"? Thinking about the suspected (some maybe proven?) Russian-linked sabotage incidents, especially around transit infrastructure, in western Europe lately. This is a pretty serious "accident".

The Muppets have to put on a show to save the Kennedy Center. There you go, Disney, that's your premise.

the president has finally revealed his true form: a 1980s preppie villain determined to tear down the rec center

Top-tier Trump coping strategy: give him exactly what is already in place as a "well, you win" offer because it's very likely he doesn't know that status quo.
