Separate but related: You are allowed to (and should) just roll your eyes at a Lbox review you find absurd and silently move on . No need to leave a pointlessly hostile comment along the lines of “lol” or “bad take” or “that ain’t it chief” or whatever the current flavor of “I disagree” may be.

This post is unavailable.

I welcome thoughtful, civil rejoinders but no longer bother replying to drive-by insults. Just delete those comments and block the folks who leave ’em.

I continue to be amazed by people so furious about a stranger’s movie opinion that even locking comments on the review in question doesn’t deter them. They need so badly to say “You’re an idiot” that they’ll go to the trouble of navigating to some other random review and saying it there.

Where were all these right-wingers objecting to Obama’s Cheesecake Factory line when Alexander Payne held a beat too long on an establishing shot of Tony Roma’s.

Seen comments to this effect several times now and find them truly bizarre. “Who’s on First?” was already roughly half a century old when I first encountered it in the mid-’80s, was recognizably “old-timey,” and I had zero difficulty understanding or appreciating it. It’s a simple joke!

Members of a now-defunct movie chat group have been voting on new releases for the past 26 years and YOU CAN SEE EVERYTHING is now the highest-rated feature-length film (out of 5,035). Doubt it’ll stay there, comparatively few votes as yet, but damn.

Most devastating October surprise in history. So much for any blue wave. This will energize Republican voters like nothing else. DAMN IT ALL WHY MUST HE BE SO CRAFTY.

Been going back and forth on how much it bugs me that Fielder declines to press Holmes on the fraudulent acts that got her convicted. The film makes it out to be a Derek Bentley deal—did “Let him have it, Chris!” mean “Give the officer the gun” or “Shoot the officer”? Which it wasn’t at all.

Her case was open and shut, with zero chance she didn’t intentionally commit fraud. I can rationalize the directors ignoring that fact as Herzogian ecstatic truth, since the film’s far more compelling as a meditation on unknowability. But it is fundamentally fraudulent itself. In a good way? Maybe.

It’s very much like the moment in the end credits of [30-YEAR-OLD FAKE DOCUMENTARY, TITLE REDACTED] that reveals it’s fictional and is followed by an unexpected cast list. Except this one isn’t and isn’t.

You know you’ve gotten old when you start reflexively rejecting every hot new thing. TikTok? Nope. Prediction markets? Pass. Generative AI? I’d rather degenerate.

I have never not laughed aloud at the part of “Desiderata” (the ’70s song version) that advises “And listen to others. Even the dull and ignorant. They, too, have their story.”

Sadly this is also what most screen adaptations of great literature amount to. “Let’s streamline the narrative to its essence, ignoring the inconvenient fact that most of the artistry resides in each specific sequence of words.” (Also makes translations ultra-challenging, to be fair.)

(Misremembered the context of that line, which isn’t in this scene. It’s been too long since I saw NXNW; I’ll probably rectify that tonight.)

Anyone know whether DOOR III is wholly independent (concept excluded of course) from the preceding two films? Seems to be, judging from cast and character names.

Gotta love the geniuses over at TMDb, who thought "Let's take a poster concept entirely designed around overlaid text and remove the text so that it's just some faces staring at you." (I'm sure they did the same to the original, just happened to see this one a moment ago.)

(As a patron, I have now fixed this so that I’ll never see the photoshopped version again, except maybe via screenshots. But it’s annoying that I have to do it for every film.)

(Ticketing this year has been abysmal, with the website initially offering nothing except a) buy expensive pass or b) submit email to be notified when tix go on sale. There’s a 10-film bundle, but I only discovered that after tickets had been on sale for hours (by which time BEHEMOTH! was gone).

Only the second time I’ve been to this screening room (last time was PICTURES OF GHOSTS) and I’d really like to see things here more often.

Happened upon this 1964 NYT ad and marveled at the prices. Then I did the inflation conversion and discovered that flying *coach* from NY to LA cost today's equivalent of $1,567.92. (In which case I would indeed upgrade to first-class, costing $1,738.65 in 2026 dollars. Might as well.)

“My daughter hasn’t grown out of being trans.” Our advice columnist [author of IRREVERSIBLE DAMAGE: THE TRANSGENDER CRAZE SEDUCING OUR DAUGHTERS] weighs in. I’m on tenterhooks. What will she advise? Next: advice columnist Stephen Miller weighs in on “My best friend overstayed his visa in 1961.”

I’m informed that it is in fact the product of some “race science” dipshit. Will leave the link up because the test itself is actually quite good and you’re not giving them any personal info or even bullshit fuel by taking it, as far as I can tell.

(Hopefully this is not some racist thing; I’m not sure why white adults are the baseline.)

I mean I don’t know [looks up chart-toppers from oh let’s say 1993, when I was 25 years old and radio was still a thing] “Informer” by Snow (7 weeks at #1), and in fact could not even have told you there was ever a band or mononymed artist (looks like it’s the latter) called Snow.

And I would watch 500 MILES And I’d *re*watch LIFE AND NOTHING MORE Just to be the man who made a lame-ass joke All Bluesky will abhor Da da dun da! (Da da dun da!)

What's wrong with you people? Why would you do that? WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?!? ("It looks better at thumbnail size" fuck the fuck off Phil Istine)

I’ve seen 75 of the NYT’s top 100 21st-century shows (though bailed on a few). Not bad given that movies are my focus. Highest-ranked shows I haven’t seen at all (they’re on my list): The Crown, The Comeback, Band of Brothers.

My dad has an annoying tendency (watching movies at home—not in a theater, thankfully) to ask questions about things that are meant to be temporarily mysterious. DAD: Why did she do that? ME: Wait a bit and we’ll find out! But at least he hasn’t convinced himself that it’s a fuckin’ disability.

Apparently we’ve progressed from not knowing what “wherefore” meant to just pretending the line was actually “Where the fuck art thou, Romeo? I don’t see you.” (Also is this really the best use of his time that Eggers can think of?)
