News just came out that an Anthropic AI disproved the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH). That's a stepping stone to proving P=NP. Not pants-wetting time, but time to check that you have a diaper supply ready. 😅

Here's the best description I've heard of the past two days in cybersecurity. I'm still laughing over '4'. It's the laugh of the Red Masque but I'll take a hearty laugh when I can get it.

norvid_studies@norvid-studies.bsky.social

the story goes like this

People arguing whether AI will kill us all are missing the point. It might be *by accident*. If nothing else, the (supposed) solution to the Navier-Stokes problem shows a vulnerability - if AI solves P=NP then civilization comes to a halt *suddenly*. It might not be the end but it'll be a disaster.

Need suggestions. 10th wedding anniversary is coming up. We had originally planned a reception-like party, but then we figured why not go to Australia, but now it looks like we won't be getting to Oz before the spring, so I need something to do or somewhere to go. London? Vegas? A train? Karaoke?

None, and I mean zero, of the responses are addressing the problem here -- AI lets people bring their dreams to life. It is the *wrong* way to give life to your dreams, because your dreams are now enslaved to a tool. But people just want to dream. Doesn't help to insist they practice.

There are so many stupid things going on but here's a couple of my favs - you cant make mixed media work with AI because its just one medium...AI -cartoon/dreamy aren't styles? AI is so simplistic and generic It thinks genres count as styles I guess -you dont need expensive art supplies to make art

Socialism and totalitarianism are similar. How? They're both responses to capitalism. Capitalism needs to be reined in. The right chose totalitarianism to do that. And it could have worked! A benevolent, competent totalitarian could have forced reforms on capitalism. We, ah, didn't get that.

The left is choosing socialism to rein in capitalism. And it could work! Government control of various industries would do wonders to curb capitalism's excesses. Control of too much would turn into communism, which might (might?) be worse than capitalism in the long run. We gotta find a balance.

Best analogy I can think of for the AI data center problem? Transmutation. You *can* transmute lead to gold, it just takes a giant cyclotron. If you want to build an industry around transmutation, you'll need lots of giant cyclotrons. And you'll crash the gold market so it won't be worth it.

In this analogy, data centers are cyclotrons and the gold market is the market for human labor. It's a real problem. There's a reason that transmuting lead into gold with cyclotrons never became a profitable enterprise.

As a writer, I'm particularly impressed by the epic poem it made, given the prompt: "Write a 10-page rhyming poem using only words that start with the letter S." Not impossible for a human to do but it would be incredibly tedious, and the result ain't half bad. claude.ai/public/artif...

claude.aiSAMSONIAD: Epic Poem of Seven Scrolls in Sibilant VerseRead SAMSONIAD, a masterfully crafted epic poem retelling Samson's story through seven scrolls of alliterative sibilant verse. Every word begins with 's'.

The illustration for FRIDAY was in my mind when it came to make the cover for PLATINUM DONKEYS. While I am nowhere near as talented as Mr. Whelan, images get stuck in my head the same way. This is how Maggie was meant to look and I'm glad (even using some sketchy tools) I was able to get there.

FRIDAY (1982) Acrylic - 30" x 20" Robert Heinlein does create memorable characters! Not even halfway through this book I had a nearly photographic image of Friday in my mind. By the time I finished I felt confident about the substance and approach my painting would have. 1/4

I had an image in my head this morning and I wanted to bring it to fruition. A blue fist of rebellion, punching outward at a surrounding circle of red ideologies -- but it's clear that the blue outnumbers the red, overall.

We should use every tool available to fix problems, and the most effective and efficient tool should be selected for use. If Capitalism is the best choice to solve a problem, open it up to the free market! If Socialism is a better choice, socialize it.

Communism, Authoritarianism, Democracy, Confederalism -- *everything* should be on the table if it improves the lives of the people. The ideologies we use are not important. The results are.

I guess I'd like to see a Rebel Party in American politics, rebelling against the ideologies that have divided us. Ideologies are tools; they are good tools in some circumstances and poor tools in another. Government shouldn't be about using the same tool to fix everything.

That's an interesting (?) place to be. I think it's saying that I'm difficult to classify. But seriously, just throw me in the furry cluster, leaning to the tech/science side. 😊

I made a map of 3.4 million Bluesky users - see if you can find yourself! bluesky-map.theo.io I've seen some similar projects, but IMO this seems to better capture some of the fine-grained detail

1. Elites enjoy a culture of decadence. 2. The decadence creates widespread economic hard times. 3. To protect their wealth, the elites prop up an authoritarian stooge to ensure austerity programs don't hit them. 4. The authoritarian stooge goes wacky and starts wars. That's 1920s Germany. Right?

Today on "Deep Dives in which Google has failed me", I'm trying to figure out why everybody hates Will Stancil. He seems like a socialist that right wingers hate, and the enemy of my enemy is my friend. More importantly, he lives in my broad neighborhood and is offering what sounds like good advice.

"The very first rubber dick to touch government-issued leather boots triggered a full-blown chemical weapons response. That is not metaphor. That is not exaggeration. That is a literal sentence that happened in America in 2026."

Elf M. Sternberg@elfsternberg.bsky.social

"The Founding Fathers wept. Somewhere, a federal HR manager clutched their chest and whispered, 'No. Not like this.' "We proved that you can bring a trillion-dollar security apparatus to its knees with one well-aimed rubber cock." www.closertotheedge.net/p/the-dildo-... #Delightful

If you're from Minnesota, this article is a great pat on the back. My favorite paragraph:

Chris@chris-hhh.bsky.social

"Minnesotans are insisting that their neighbors are their neighbors whether they were born in Mpls or Mogadishu. That is, arguably, a deeply Christian philosophy, one apparently loathed by some of the most powerful Christians in America" ~ @adamserwer.bsky.social www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...

It's not official that we have a new dog yet, but my granddaughter has grown unreasonably fond of this one. For those not keeping track, the scrawny white one is new. He's a foster that we are considering keeping.

Woke up in afib, I guess; heart rate 154, pain in my chest. Got it to 50, then normal 75, so I guess I'm still alive. Should sleep some more, I guess. Hard to do when death's within your chest. Two steps forward and I'll be fine. When I take a step back, forgive my whine.

The problem is that capitalism will latch onto cheap AI art because the public will buy it. But that's a problem with capitalism; chasing profit by any means instead of supporting producers or progress. As artists, we will always innovate faster than the AI -- because it is trained on us.

So the correct take on AI is to admit that it's pretty good pablum. Let the masses enjoy it. Then show them things amazing and better. Go crazy, push new limits in every art form, blow the masses' mind away. Don't insist AI art is bad. The public knows it's the mix of all the art that came before.

Just like John Campbell identified the Hero's Journey as an underlying story beneath many other stories, generative AI is pulling out the Ur-Art beneath art. It's the lowest common denominator. And that's not a bad thing. The public will like it. And we, as artists, will just *do better*.

I've just been cocooning in games lately, and I made a mistake with Rimworld. It's a fine game, but if you've played Dwarf Fortress then Rimworld is deeply boring. Yes, lots of things can happen but you'll never see anything like that insanity of a dwarf fortress spiral.

In one Dwarf Fortress game I had a dwarf give birth while fighting a goblin raid. She used her infant son as a shield, mentally snapped when he died, and then turned her newborn's bones into a legendary dining chair -- that caused more goblin raids. That shit is just Tuesday in DF.

Quote this with a book you read way too young that explains why you are the way you are. Hahahaha! I think I was eleven when I read this. Soft porn -- and *weird* porn -- definitely had an effect on this young boy's development.

Quote this with a book you read way too young that explains why you are the way you are. In my defence, nine-year-old me had no idea how terrible Playboy's audio system advice was, so I read every issue cover-to-cover. Starting with the comics. This issue had the first Niven story I ever read.

You all know that I'm avoiding the news, and I fell into a hole of Rap Battles on YouTube. The flows are pretty good and the disses are fine, but I'm worried that these songs are affecting my mind. I'm talking in a rhythm and what's even worse, everything I say is in two-line rhyme verse! 😁
