I *think* this comes from Dietz in 1995: doi.org/10.1021/ci00... And then Gasteiger in 1997: doi.org/10.1021/ci97... But, "valence bonds don't always represent chemistry" has been obvious to inorganic / organometallic chemists for a *long* time.

Chemistry World@chemistryworld.com

There’s a moment in every chemist’s life when you realise you’ve been told fairytales. Maybe one turning point, maybe a series of small realisations throughout your education. Guillermo Restrepo reflects on one such example: how we draw molecules. #ChemSky www.chemistryworld.com/opinion/stop...

About twenty years ago, I was about to start my first faculty position. (I was actually on the job market) I knew I wanted a 3d chemical editor easy enough for undergrads and high school students to use - but would work for #compchem research too I wrote a "manifesto" for @avogadro.cc

And I'd like to extend this to easily access / search databases and bring back "One-Click Submit" calculations. We have an "avogadro-web" component coming too. In other words, I hope the #chemsky community will continue to complain, make suggestions, push ideas and do great work.

I'm excited how far the #opensource #openscience progress has come. In 2007, there were questions whether open source would succeed in chemistry. Now, it's everywhere.

We're about to release v2.1 - and there are over 30 Python plugins - and more to come. If you've got a #compchem tool, it's really easy to add a plugin and voilà, it's available to hundreds of thousands of @avogadro.cc users to install

There were lots of "viewer" apps, but few 3d editors - and almost none were free and open source. (Most were super expensive) Or they'd be one platform but not others. Or tied to one package. I revisited that design doc (a bunch of bullet points and design ideas) recently and they still hold up

p(Dystopia) seems like an important consideration - (waves hands and gestures broadly) - you know considering everything? My 15-year old son said he doesn't like a lot of sci-fi because "dystopias seem more realistic." Ugh.

Ethan Zuckerman@ethanz.bsky.social

Gary Marcus @garymarcus.bsky.social suggests we overfocus on pDoom in AI (the probability that AIs kill us all) and underfocus on pDystopia, the much higher likelihood that the AI surveillance machine will become coercive government surveillance. #Attention2026

For years, I've been saying that ChemDraw costs too much for what you get. And for various reasons, no one really made much progress on an open source version. So it's fun to see new variations pop up in the last few months.

I'm going to follow up.. #chemsky How do we make chemical structures (either 2D or 3D), reactions accessible to alt-text and screen readers, etc. Do I turn it into a name "this diagram indicates caffeine or 1,3,7-trimethylxanthine" I'd really welcome thoughts and discussion...

Dear #chemsky - I remember lots of chat about digital accessibility of course materials. I don't remember conclusions about chemical structures / reaction schemes. Are there good "best practices" guides out there for the chemistry aspects?

It’s not just smaller schools like UNC Asheville. Around the US, *most* universities run a huge deficit with athletics. Don’t get me wrong - I like NCAA athletics. But at a time when almost all universities are slashing budgets, laying off staff, etc. Can we talk about athletics budgets?

Britt Lundgren@brittlundgren.bsky.social

"At just 2,600 students, “we don’t have the economies of scale that the larger schools have,” UNC Asheville spokesperson Eden Bloss told The News & Observer. .. Yes, UNCA is far too small to support DI athletics & our students cant afford it. I am glad to see this finally getting attention.

Well that should raise some eyebrows at #Pitt - should we be proud we're getting called out?

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Vance: "Some of America's most elite universities bring in foreigners to undercut wages of American residents. There are 9 universities in particular we believe merit an investigation. Those are Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Brown, the University of Pittsburg, UC Davis, Cal Tech, Arizona State, and MIT."

The IceCube neutrino detector has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in physics. The Trump administration has proposed slashing its budget in half in 2027.

Bonus - they don't even have private rocket ships.

Some great new #compchem results from my next-door neighbors in the Carter-Fenk group.

Pitt Chemistry@pittchemistry.bsky.social

New Nature Publication from the Carter-Fenk Lab! The Carter-Fenk Lab initiated CCSD(T) calculations from DFT densities to find that chemically accurate bond dissociation energies for metal diatomics can be achieved just by including approximate triple excitations. Read below: zurl.co/PpbLz

nature.comImproving coupled cluster theory for strongly correlated molecules with Kohn-Sham density encodingCoupled cluster theory using a Kohn-Sham density functional reference can dramatically outperform the standard Hartree-Fock-based approach for strongly correlated systems, but the origin of these improvements has remained unclear. We show these improvements arise from differences in the one-particle density as encoded into the Fock matrix, not from the nature of the orbitals themselves, as is commonly assumed. Exploiting this insight, Kohn-Sham references enable near-chemical accuracy for electronic and thermochemical properties of transition metal dimers and main group compounds. Notably, Kohn-Sham coupled cluster qualitatively recovers the entire chromium dimer potential energy surface, a notorious failure case for conventional methods. We further introduce a density difference diagnostic that detects multireference character and guides the selection of optimal references at mean-field cost. Together, these results establish a practical route to treating strong correlation within quantum chemistry’s “gold standard” framework, with immediate implications for machine learning potential development and materials research, which rely heavily on density functional theory. Using density functional theory (DFT) densities in coupled-cluster theory dramatically improves its accuracy for strongly correlated transition-metal molecules, providing a simple way to generate beyond-DFT benchmark data for machine learning models.

Sept. 21, 1926: The University of Pittsburgh gives final approval to the Cathedral of Learning, a Gothic skyscraper that will anchor the campus and become the tallest college building in the world. Groundbreaking is to start next month. Designed as 29 stories, it will grow to 42 when opened in 1937.

I was shocked after moving to Pittsburgh and learning there were 130 municipalities in Allegheny County, for like 1.2M people.

god does Pennsylvania need this. a Holy Roman Empire-esque crazy quilt patchwork of cities, townships, boroughs, etc

"Which gets to something fundamental about A.I. coding, and A.I. in general: It’s very good at reproducing things that look and feel like what came before." … "Craft makes money, and A.I. tends to wreck your sense of craft."

Most respondents focused on research use, but 11 indicated using Avogadro for chemical education / teaching. Since the fall semester is starting, we'll follow up to understand how we can help more in the classroom (e.g., sharing more materials, better tutorials). If you have ideas - let us know!

My kids got books from Dolly. As they were growing up, they couldn't quite understand that someone was just *giving* them books they could keep.

Joel@itsjoels.bsky.social

This is the letter kids got at the end of Dolly’s Imagination Library. I defy you to read this and not cry.

I tell my students about the Optimism Bias. Heck, I even tell my kids when they (as teenagers) propose overly optimistic projects. So. Tomorrow is the start of the semester. Why am I surprised that I didn't get everything I wanted accomplished over the summer? #academicsky

I've been on review panels. Can you imagine what the NIH and NSF could do with another $1.5B right now? There's so much good science that's going unfunded.

Yesterday the US Administration supercharged its explicit effort to bar international students from staying in the US after graduation. All Americans should know: 1/3 of *all* STEM PhDs working in the US are immigrants who graduated from US universities, then stayed. www.piie.com/index%2Ephp/...

More of this. Yes, I use supercomputing facilities and cloud storage. Yes, I think there should be rules about power and water use. Data center build-out is happening incredibly fast and cities and towns and states need time to set rules Widespread support for this
