I am doing a Transdisciplinary degree now because I am indecisive.

Marine if Apple released a folding laptop tomorrow. Like the duo but 13 inches across the narrow side. No back screen… touch based keyboard, full size screen… Or just a laptop with a touch screen.

Today I am watching Man with a Movie Camera by Dziga Vertov while analyzing his manifesto. I am amazed sometimes how researchers grab snippets of writing from disparate spaces to enhance the understanding of their own work.

In this case it is reflexivity and awareness that a camera is not an impartial observer. Choices of framing, location selection and editing all change the context of the work. Likewise ethics and representation.

Oddly this awareness is also pert of visual research, where the subject of historical photographs are captured for reasons such as promotion, or documentation or simple family snapshots. I find we can learn a lot about communities by what is at the periphery of the images that remain…

I’m really hating that companies develop products with the assumption that your phone will do most of the processing. It’s a Phone. I don’t want the battery to die because your system requires wifi, and that I turn all other wifi off by connecting directly and THEN your POS disconnects.

Cool. I have slwss been a fan of campaign furniture.. this feels like it would qualify.

Wow. Glancing at the Chapters wiki article my early assumptions are wrong. I always thought Heather Reisman controlled everything, but that is apparently not true. Chapters competed against indigo, but while I was away in BC Indigo bought Chapters. Reisman ran Indigo.

Her model is that stock is only bought by the bookstore she. Items cross the counter. Until the. It belongs to the publisher. This is why small stores have trouble: they purchase their stock. I really think the conglomeration of book stores has affected the market for books and magazines.

Similar to how Apple affected the Music industry with iPods and their online stores, owning the means of distribution has affected what gets displayed to the public. We need small book and magazine shops now more than ever. But we also need more reasonable rents and access.

A long time ago I was at the chapters at Dalhousie… the tables near the coffee shop. The whole idea of a bookstore was changing at that time in the early 2000s. There was a woman sitting, somewhat out of place. Not reading a magazine or drinking coffee. Just sitting. And watching.

Chapters has changed in the ensuing years. There is no longer a collaboration between them and Starbucks. Even the number and variety of magazines has changed. Key stores like the one on Whyte ave and Dalhousie have closed.

It’s not a bookstore anymore but a malll of stuff. People went because of books, but the publishing industry has changed so much it’s just not … anything anymore. The vibe is gone. I don’t think theirs is a coffee shop anywhere near Dalhousie station anymore. Not sure if that’s a loss.

She said something that I will always remember. I never looked at her but I was observing the entirety of the space, the tables by the magazine racks “You don’t see me because I’m invisible” Granted, the general demeanor was one of “avoid” but it was mostly this persons attitude than their clothes

It made me realize that every reaction the world has around a person like this is seen by them. Their attitude changes because of … the observers. Honestly I was just there because the shop was convenient. The fact that it is completely gone now is striking.

Anyone else miss those indie and questionable magazine, record and video stores? You know, the only one in the city renting pirated copies of Megazone in the basement of that hotel lobby which was torn down for “progress”? Do those kinds of places even exist anymore?

Did they change the nine yes/no ballot questions for the walk-in voting?!? Did people even read the question before voting? Are there really that many idiots in the province that don’t realize immigrants pay taxes, too?!?

… well … looking at the vote results per region you can sure tell where gullible albertans live. Early numbers on the other nine questions are concerning, but hopefully common sense prevails as they complete counts. Maybe people didn’t read them closely? The “no to the 9” message was pretty clear

I was watching an anime and someone opened a spell book and the pages inside looked exactly like the early gaming books for Chivalry and Sorcery (I think… typewritten collections of notes regarding all if the logistics for paying for castles as a knight)

Well… a map-based application stopped loading the material from geography databases, leaving me unable to use the app as I had been. Thankfully I was able to demonstrate it to someone else this morning but I am disappointed I cannot continue “playing” this afternoon.

I was talking to someone who mentioned their daughter, now in school, doesn’t really offer much when she is asked how her day was. But when going to a parent-teacher meeting when their daughter saw the swing she got a huge story in what happened that day.

I suggested she have several photographs of spots in school to have and have them on the fridge to help get stories about the day… Sometimes an image can jog a memory… that might help with connecting with kids…
