it's just a glaring piece of evidence that for leftists, their politics is a giant gaping ego wound that they need assuaged, they're doing it out of a desperate desire to be a Good Person and maybe The Goodest Person. it *infuriates* them to not have their valor respected, which is why I won't do it

I will never understand the psychological profile of leftists who demand that liberals, who they will never support, acknowledge that leftists are honorable. "You have to admit anarchists do important work in their communities!" no, i don't! you won't acknowledge anything liberalism does!

See? There is no secret “defeat fascism once and for all” belief system. You just do the work, every election. Far left, center left, it doesn’t matter. Learn the lesson: Stop pretending you’re special and just fucking vote for Democrats.

Taniel@taniel.bsky.social

Lula has been reelected president, Brazilian media has now called. An extraordinary comeback for the left-wing politician who trailed by 2 points in round 1 but managed to hold off Flávio Bolsonaro, the former president's son.

Leaving aside all of the other nonsense, politics have been cyclical for the entirety of American history. Some would argue that’s the point of American history. The only people undermining progress are the ones pretending that you actually can just *beat* conservatism once and for all. Just vote.

ellie lockhart (she/they)@eleanor.lockhart.contact

“I have decided I am never going to fix my clinical depression; it pays me too well to sell it to an audience.”

Vote every election, for the Dem ideally. Tell others to do the same too. Demonstrate that conservative lunacy isn’t appealing, and redemonstrate it again and again. Send the GOP to the wilderness to regroup. But we can’t beat them forever, and we definitely can’t when you all keep helping them.

The fact that Western publics are unreasonably mad at objective trade-offs and tolerable living standards (and have to make up new words to describe a nebulous “crisis”) is bad because it generates real crises (avoiding trade-offs causes debt crises, grievance politics cause democratic crises).

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

“It’s real, even if it doesn’t show up in charts.” How do you know it’s real, then? How do you know that you’re not simply insisting on a reality you prefer, in the face of evidence? How would you support your view? Is it falsifiable, at all? How are you any different from MAGA in this respect?

I screamed about this in the months leading up to Nov 2024 and everyone (people who were Biden/Harris supporters) looked at me like I was crazy. Our betrayal of Ukraine (and the West generally) was predictable. I'll never stop being mad about this.

BlueSky doesn’t default to algorithmic discovery, so the usual bogeymen don’t apply. Yet this app is just as fucked up as all the other ones.

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

This may be unpopular but the companies’ bad incentives are only a secondary problem. The primary problem is the bad incentives social media creates for ALL OF US, which is why even platforms not owned by tech giants become these ideological spaces divorced from truth.

We are fully post-truth. I disagree with Will a lot, but his refusal to go along to get along is his most admirable quality.

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

because I don’t want to live in some great shared hallucination where an idea’s truth is proven when a critical mass of people insist it is

The continued indignities Trump keeps trying to force onto Ukraine and Zelenskyy are just so enraging. This is a five alarm fire, but people just do not care. The press is reporting on it, but there isn’t really that clear, red letter “U.S. has abandoned Europe for Russia” headline that’s needed.

They’d all rather just scold us about how, well really Rubio is still meeting with Ukrainian officials so this is all just for show. For show? Who’s show? Who is the audience for this? Who wants to see the U.S. abandon Ukraine? I can think of exactly one person.

I cannot think of a more disgusting and disqualifying thing to say. Betraying literally millions of people around the world. Go. Fuck. Yourself.

Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff to Vladimir Putin today: “You talk so much about Trump being a humanitarian, you are a humanitarian also, sir. And I salute that. I commend you.”

This is so awful.

All victims in the Oregon school shooting Thursday were shot inside one special needs classroom. A teacher tried to fight away the shooter's gun, helping to prevent more bloodshed before a father took down the shooter, police say. Follow live updates: https://cnn.it/3WvqJdz

We're now just straight up repeating discourses on this app.

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

For smallish windfalls like $30k, all you have to do is split it across several years' salary and ask if it seems life-changing. Is someone who makes $50k for three years dramatically worse off than someone who makes $60k? Obviously, you'd rather be the latter, but it's not early retirement money.

Like lots of people were yelling about economic slack in 2010 or so, while the zeitgeist moved to deficit reduction.

"10 years ago no one I knew had two jobs" in a vibecession thread 10 years ago I remember people saying that 10 years ago no one they knew had two jobs we've been in a rhetorical recession since the Great Recession. everyone is just saying the exact same things

Fascism. Pure and simple.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Markwayne Mullin reveals that the Trump admin is trying to build a RICO case against Ilhan Omar: "There was conspiracy to deceive the American govt, and therefore everything else that came in with it could then be looked at as the same case ... the statute of limitations on things, they don't apply"

I know we're all gonna laugh at this, but no joke, this has been my fear at every job I've ever had: Publicly reveal I was deeply unqualified and then instantly be mocked and then fired. Imposter syndrome is real, in some cases!

It came from funding ideological fellow travelers like Trump, who've used Putin's playbook not to help Russia, but to enrich and empower themselves. This just happens to also massively benefit Putin by undermining any attempt to imply the America's democracy is any better than Russia.

Since 2016, he's gotten a weakened NATO, weakened U.S. resolve for defending Ukraine, and rationalization - even from many in the west - of his whataboutisms in defense of his own autocracy. That is all by design, but it didn't come about from the IRA or any Wagnerian bot farms.

I am extremely not someone who believes anyone who disagrees with me is a shill or intelligence operative. I don't believe that is how Russian influence in 2016 metastasized in our politics. Putin's propaganda works not by making people love him, but by making people unable to discern truth.

It's also the first bullet in Putin's principal playbook for establishing and maintaining his autocracy. I'm sure that's a coincidence!

karl rove knausgård@uhactually.bsky.social

I think the defining element of the Trump era is precisely this (the collapse of any shared ability to reason or discern the truth) and the funny thing is this is what everyone said would happen in 2016.

This is exactly it. It is broadly applicable to our entire politics, not just Elon's dumb car.

It is now broadly accepted among so many people - frankly, so many of YOU - that the way to prove any claim is to get a critical mass of social media likes and shares behind it. If you try to insist that false things not be treated as true, you’ll change little, but you’ll ruin your reputation.

I’ve honestly been wondering where Sky went and this explains it perfectly. If you care about data, if you care about policy - if you care about *reality* - it’s hard to even express how depressing it is to see everyone mutually agree that facts simply don’t matter anymore.
