“How much time do you think this defense secretary spends looking in the mirror in the morning? These are not serious people” — Obama’s audience in Ohio is hanging on every word as he skewers Trump and Hegseth

A couple of first-time cocktails out of the bar this evening. I had a bunch of oranges, so I could make fresh-squeezed OJ, an ingredient I'd never used here. Anyhow, the most popular drink tonight was the...

And this one, which I think was invented by Perplexity, whom I asked for suggestions, is a riff on a mid-century gin sour recipe called the Army & Navy, in which OJ substitutes for some of the lemon. It was really good. Ping me for the recipe, if you're not offended by AI cocktails.

Ward Eight. This is a classic Boston cocktail, reportedly invented in 1898 at the not-so-long-gone Locke Ober Café in the Back Bay, originally made to celebrate the electoral victory of a famous Boston political boss. Rye, OJ, lemon juice and two teaspoons of Grenadine. Ended up making three.

People do some crazy sh*t.

I remember a faculty member when I was in graduate school (would have been early 80s) advocating for sequencing the dog genome to understand "the molecular biology of loyalty." This, sadly, is an unfortunate but entirely of-the-moment pivot.

I did not have this on my "I imagine lots of scientists will pivot to get military funding in the coming years" bingo card. I'm not angry at myself for that oversight, just disappointed.

Note two members of our industry.

Ramaswamy has produced an attack ad weaponizing the rape of his opponent, Amy Acton, when she was 12 years old. It features Acton’s mother, who abandoned Acton after she was raped by her step-father, fleeing the state with her husband. Here is the corporate money helping fund that ad.

As I try to hold on to a residual belief in the fundamental goodness of humanity, all I can think is that guys like this (sadly, there are plenty of them) become so coddled, so surrounded by yes-men (and women), so deeply into their own bubble of bullshit, that they lose all connection to reality.

Vivek is doubling down and doing a $4m ad buy for the Acton Mom ad which has been widely debunked and faced bipartisan backlash www.axios.com/2026/10/21/r...

Perhaps a day to revisit that hellhole. Just in time for game day injury reports! Thank you, Ukraine.

And for the sake of completeness, tonight’s wine - 2017 Wingspan Moons of Neptune Zin. Know nothing about it, except that it’s been sitting in my “cellar” for a while. It was good!

Returning to cocktail programming, tonight I'm done with honey. This is a Brooklyn - a Manhattan riff, of course. The key ingredient, hard to find, is the French Amaro-ish liqueur Amer Picon. Fortunately, I have a French daughter-in-law, so I am well provisioned.

Over here at House Gilman, I have just signed an executive order declaring that the moon is, in fact, made of green cheese. Anything else you may heard is a hoax. Or, to resurrect a golden oldie from the Nixon administration, it is "inoperative."

I’m just gonna try to take this at face value for a moment. So if people pay their premiums and make no insurance claims, they’re committing fraud. Therefore, I’ve been fraudulently paying for home and auto insurance for decades. I’m in deep shit.

Assistant AG for Fraud Colin McDonald: "Apparently 35% of people have never even used their Obamacare account for any health services. That is a statistical impossibility and it's because these are not real people seeking real care. These are fraudsters."

This story is powerful. You can readily understand the frustrations all around. Fortunately, a happy ending for little Hazel. This is not really a Vertex issue IMHO. Rather it reveals systemic cracks in our entire system of drug development, regulation, and healthcare delivery. How do we respond?
