When I'm not busy cooking or being sarcastic, I work on digital religion & gender. If you meet me in person, I'm probably the one wearing purple. Website: https://giuliaevolvi.com/

It's ok to ask for reviews but why, why do I have to register to the journal's website, set a password, give them all of my data, write my grandma's last name and the name of my first dog, recite a poem in latin, offer two butterfly wings and the eye of a toad just to say I'm too busy to review?

Last week I organized a workshop. I invited academics (professors, researchers, Ph.Ds) and non-academics (journalists, activists, writers). I didn't put any title in the program, nor any affiliation: just the name and the expertise of the person. That's my experiment to make academia more open

Cheesy post alert: I'm preparing a grant application & organizing my project's final workshop. There's SO MANY people who are helping and supporting me doing these two major things. I am getting hope in academia again :)

Il mio progetto Marie Curie sta finendo e io festeggio con un workshop su Cattolicesimo, femminismo, e media digitali! Con speaker eccezionalə, aperto a tuttə e si può seguire anche su Teams. Scrivetemi per info

In my experience, PhD students and early career researchers are always fast to answer and ready to help. Then, somewhere alongside our path, we end up being the professors ignoring emails for 3 months. Is it because we think of ourselves too highly, or is it because we are burnt out?

Finally my article on sex toys - the only thing I ever written about something that isn't sad or depressing - is out! Jokes aside, this comes from a great collaboration with Gabi de la Vega and her MA thesis work and I'm so happy about this!

I asked Chatgpt whether it would fund my Marie Curie project. Chatgpt said it is a terrible project. But thing is, that project WAS funded with a very high score. AI can be worse than reviewer 2, apparently

I think ICE should be abolished but you know that someone whose name rhymes with dusk has a brother who’s on an expired visa? One of the grandmas in my Boulder book club told me so I’m 100% sure it’s true

Now it's maybe a good time to tell the story of when I went to a Rocky Horror Picture Show live performance and since it was the first time they wrote V for "virgin" on my cheek with lipstick but I didn't have make up removal at home so it was still there the day after when I went teaching

As women, racialised, LGBT, disabled, working class folk have entered academia, we/they have exposed how knowledge is not some abstract thing to “discover.” Knowledge is produced in particular (hierarchical) social and political settings. Academia, like other institutions, reproduces inequalities.

what's funny about this is that monks were perfectly delighted with the printing press, the myth that the late medieval church resisted printing is false, you can actually embellish printed books and people did, illuminators and scribes are not the same people, and simon should read more.

Workshop about AI. A 3rd-year Ph.D. student said she trained AI with her papers, so AI could write papers in her style for her. She was applauded for being so smart. I keep thinking that as a 3rd year Ph.D. I was a really shitty writer, so glad I didn't have AI so I actually learned how to write.

I know someone who walked 15 hours just to reach the goal of 100.000 steps and I understand it, I am writing academic grants with the same spirit of trying to test my limits while knowing I’ll feel pain

Conference. Q&A. A random guy starts by saying “I don’t know anything on this topic” and proceeds with a 20 minutes comment suggesting new literature to the female presenters A woman who literally won a prize for an article on that topic said “I’ve got two questions but I’ll make them very short”

This is the time of the year when I think about my Marie Curie application in 2022, when I wrote I was going to webscrape data from Twitter because "what can go wrong, a billionaire buys Twitter, makes it a far-right playground, and places restrictions for academics to study the platform? nonsense!"

This is the first summer I spend as employee of my current uni. We don’t have to request holidays, we can go when we want. I went on holidays in July when everyone had super urgent emails for me, and I had to work anyway. Now that I’m back everyone is on holiday and nobody answers my urgent emails

I booked a room for an event in the fall. The booking was confirmed. However, I was told to book again because apparently booking twice is what people must do. So now I’m all happy because I’m starting to gather material for a Kafkaesque novel

Since you are all talking about the Odyssey my take on the story: Odysseus didn’t want to go home he wanted to see the world and know more than other people but being him an Asshole he kills all his mates and cheats his wife a lot in the meantime
