Im deeply confused. They claim discovery of crystal structures but dont actually make crystals or show they exist? Like...wtf? You dont have a crystal if you dont have a crystal. We predict shit all day everyday, but I dont claim it is real and publish in Science without way more evidence.

Google DeepMind's latest version of the AI crystallography GNoME database still flooded with near duplicate entries and unrealistic compounds — my latest for @cenmag.bsky.social: cen.acs.org/research-int... #ChemSky

Maybe someone wondered why I did not put a tool to highlight the Bragg's law when it emerges, or maybe not... Anyway, it's there now ("Bragg condition finder" button), plus an "Explain mode" that describes what the options are for and how to use them. Cheers! 🫸🫷 stecanossa.com/cosplayapp/

I still remember the eye-opening moment when I realized that Bragg and diffuse scattering are both just a sum of waves... I can finally share an applet where anyone can put it into action. No equations, just a play of cosines: CosPlay 👉 stecanossa.com/cosplayapp/ #Crystallography #TotalScattering

This is fantastic. Don't start if you have something to do, you'll be late.

In the 1950s, Lipscomb & colleagues unpicked the structures of several boranes using low-temperature x-ray crystallography, determining they shared two electrons across three atoms. This accounted for boranes’ unusual geometry & unexpected dipole moment. www.chemistryworld.com/news/fifty-y...

Do you have a painting or drawing by Lawrence Bragg? The Nobel Prize-winning scientist appears in the 1927 Solvay photo alongside Einstein and Marie Curie; he was also a keen painter. I’m planning an exhibition about his life and times in 2027, the centenary of this picture.

Dick Van Dyke was 34 years old, and this was live television in 1960 CBS special The Fabulous Fifties, broadcast. Van Dyke is dancing with Maria Karnilova, and the whole routine was basically a joke about how fast the dance crazes of the 1950s kept changing.

British chemist Dr. Dorothy Hodgkin won the 1964 #Nobel Prize in #Chemistry for using X-ray crystallography to "see" the 3D structures of complex molecules. After 35 years of work, she solved the incredibly complex structure of insulin, 1969. She died #OTD in 1994. #WomenInSTEM

I did confirm it is not chiral! Pictured below is the same creation arranged to show it is its own mirror image. It is flipped and rotated but otherwise untouched. I'm also pretty sure it has a four-fold improper rotation axis so I'm 90% confident its point group is S4

I will continue to be excited by graphs like this one. It shows UK electricity demand over the past 24 hours (white line) and the amount that is supplied by renewables (green). It reached 90% in the middle of the night & was 80% for much of the day. 🎉🎉🎉. Still lots more to do, but we’re on the way.
