While the choir rehearse, the old historian is found in the library. It’s a really lovely, well equipped space. Nice comfortable chairs. A cafe for later. A good selection of English language novels. (Do you get arrested for posting SR books?). And guides to living in Germany in every language but…

Before we leave Brussels entirely behind I wanted just to record a REALLY #obscuresaint to whom the main cathedral is dedicated. The gothic masterpiece of St Gudula or Goedele (and later, also St Michael) is 800 years old this year. It’s a very impressive building.

Here she is carrying what I first thought was a UHF tv aerial. And now I can’t actually remember what it’s supposed to be. She’s so obscure nobody knows when she was born or died (maybe 712) or indeed what she did to become a saint. Maybe giving alms to the poor. Being a virgin.

The statue in the cathedral depicts her with a lamp and the devil trying to blow it out. Because she used to get up to pray at night and old lucifer wanted to lead her astray. Her relics were moved to Brussels in 1050 to increase the pilgrimage revenues. No record of any miracles at her tomb.

There’s a strange set of mental processes going on with transportation. Get in a car to drive somewhere and being delayed by a crash/roadworks completely different from being delayed on a train. I think having a written timetable drives a set of expectations that the “freedom” of a car doesn’t.

German rail doing its thing again this morning. There are NO direct trains from Frankfurt to Munich from the “Haupt” station. So it’s back to the airport for a change of train…has we known we would have overnighted at the airport… Sort of chaos the French or Italians are stereotyped for.

After successfully navigating the Frankfurt S-bahn from the airport which our ICE train decided was close enough, we are finally in our overnight stop hotel. 3 hours later than planned. German efficiency. Too late to eat. Herbal tea and some cookies. Going to need a proper breakfast tomorrow.

Sitting at Brussels Midi waiting for a train to Frankfurt. Contemplating our short stay in Belgium. Brussels is a lovely city, full of wonderful art and (today at least) music. But I was struck that, unlike Bristol and Bordeaux, where I’ve been lately there is very little of the colonial past here.

It’s not as though Belgium doesn’t have stuff to worry about either. And not just in Africa. It’s interesting that the man on the horse in the Royal quarter is the crusader king of Jerusalem. And that the cathedral has only recently (April 2026) apologised for the “profaned hosts” anti-Jewish trope

The concept of collective guilt must be difficult for a nation that was the victim of both world wars of course. What do you do in those circumstances? The priest at this morning’s mass took Exodus 22 as his theme and expanded it into reparations and debt forgiveness. It’s a start.

Brussels, your pastries are lovely, you’ve built a clean pedestrian friendly centre, but dragging two wheely cases over your cobbles (however pretty they look) up hill to the royal cathedral is HARD work!

Messing around with clocks every year "so it's safe for kids to walk to school" is yet another casual widespread acceptance that people driving cars won't do so safely

It’s absolutely pissing it down in Brussels. The storm has been through and knocked all the autumn leaves off. Traffic is shocking. We’re going out to the suburbs, on the metro, for dinner with Lady H’s oldest school friend.

Councillor launches a campaign to get a dangerous junction reengineered (outside the arts centre - host to kids dancing, knitting and book clubs, blood donors etc.). Facebook car warriors do their thing. I comment about their entitlement. And someone puts me right. Reply admined. Normal day.

When I travel these days I can usually do it with an “under the seat” backpack. Or a bike bag. But tomorrow we’re away for 10 nights with Lady H’s choir and I need the wheely case. Get it out of the loft. Pack it. H says “that looks too big for Ryanair”. It is. Off suitcase hunting…

Very much this. Alongside her excellent scholarship, Lucy, the RHS central team, and RHS Council do so much important work to support the discipline. Much of that work is visible but there’s so much more quietly done work going on behind the scenes that is no less vital. Congratulations Lucy!

Congratulations to Lucy Noakes for being awarded the All Party Parliamentary Group for Archives & History's 'Lifetime Achievement for Services to Archives and History’. The Group also awarded this distinction to Gary Tuson, county archivist at Norfolk Record Office. Great work on our behalves.

Have we reached (passed?) peak car? In Europe at least. The age of the incredibly wasteful inefficient personal vehicle coming to an end? Hope so.

All the spare car-making capacity in the world right now is just absurd. People want to buy cars less than countries are determined to make them. h/t Liam Denning - www.bloomberg.com/opinion/arti...
