Crown Prince 👑winter squash, one of several growing on the allotment this year. I’m working on a risotto recipe that makes the most of its sweet, nutty flavour. I foresee a few kitchen trials ahead. #KitchenGarden

I baked these two sourdough boules after Lucy @lucyantal.bsky.social suggested trying yoghurt whey. I used 600g whey and 187g water. Slightly gummy with a dense crumb, but a crisp crust and a pleasing sour tang. Toasts well too. Next time I’ll try just 200g whey.

A look inside our first whey sourdough trial. A denser crumb than usual, with a slightly sweet aroma. Next time I’ll try 200g of whey and see what difference that makes to the crumb.

Back at Ledgers Farm in Ringwould, Kent, for more fresh milk to make our Greek yoghurt 🥛 Remember door-to-door milk deliveries? Milk on tap is the next best thing, even if it's a bit of a hike from the front door!

A little context to the milk post: here I am at the Ledgers Farm vending machine. The cows and I do the work. The milkman’s nowhere to be seen.

Spotted my first conker of the season on this morning’s walk, still tucked inside its partly open, spiky shell. A reminder that autumn’s here, with garden jobs calling and comfort food back on the menu… Anyone for a game of conkers?

Our first batch of Greek yoghurt, hung in cheesecloth at 6am to let the whey drain out. Very pleased with the results. Made with fresh Holstein-Friesian milk from a local farm vending machine. Literally milk on tap. We’ll use the whey in our compost bin and to spray our berry plants.

There’s a lot to be said for putting potatoes in pastry. Our potato, leek and shallot galette puts three of this year’s garden crops to good use, all grown organically. Growing the ingredients takes considerably more patience than eating the result.

Cats of Paros - found this one asleep on a stool in a boutique in Naoussa, quite unbothered by the shoppers. The cats rule here. #SaturdayCaturday ^. .^₎ฅ

Prickly pears spotted in Lefkes, Paros, growing on the broad green cactus pads. When ripe, the flesh is sweet and juicy, between watermelon and pear, and plenty little seeds. Picking one takes a bit more care - as I found out the hard way.

We started with the dolmades at Kapari in Naoussa, Paros - vine leaves stuffed with rice and local herbs. One of those starters you’re still talking about after the meal. Worth going back for those alone. #DineOut

San Marzano Redorta filling the dehydrator shelves. A substantial tomato crop this year, grown almost entirely outside for the first time. The freezer’s already full of sauces to see us through to at least next spring, so we’re drying some of the rest.

Our Loch Katrine blackberries are growing superbly here on the Kent coast, ripening a few at a time in big, heavy clusters. Huge, juicy berries with a sweet, fragrant flavour and just a little sharpness. They can reach 9g each, so it doesn’t take many to fill your hand. #GrowYourOwn

A hefty Greek heritage tomato from our allotment kitchen garden - deeply ribbed, wonderfully juicy and barely contained by two hands. Excellent roasted, though it’s hard to beat eaten raw with cucumber and a balsamic & dijon dressing. 🍅 #GardenSky

The sunflowers in our allotment pollinator bed have rather got away from us. One has reached 14 feet, with the others standing between 10 and 12 feet. The bees love the flowers, and the birds are already eyeing up the seeds. 🌻

Canning in full swing 🍅 I’ve been saucing all week with our substantial crop of San Marzano tomatoes. Some of the sauce has gone into silicone bags for the freezer, and the rest into jars. We grow them in slightly ridiculous numbers for precisely this reason.

Digging for gold! 🥔 Yesterday evening was spent lifting the first of our maincrop Sunset potatoes from the allotment patch, along with a few overlooked Yukon Golds. #FarmToPlate

The last of our organically grown Luneor courgettes, used in a new recipe: umami mushroom-stuffed yellow courgettes. Not a bad way to finish this year’s crop. #WhatsCooking ₊˚ʚ 🌱 ₊˚✧ ゚. 🍽️

This morning’s raspberry haul, destined for cheesecake and a batch of muffins. The golden raspberries are Fallgold; the reds are a mix of Versailles, Autumn Chef and Himbo Top. The difficult part is deciding which gets the larger share.

A rustic seeded sourdough at 78% hydration 🍞 Not outrageously high, but once the seeds went in, the stretch and folds gave the biceps a proper workout. Not too shabby a result. #sourdough

Heritage tomatoes grown from seed from Paros Greece, thriving in this year’s Mediterranean-like temperatures on the Kent coast. Incredibly sweet and juicy - excellent in sandwiches or slowly cooked for breakfast. #harvest 。‧˚ʚ🍅ɞ˚‧。

Harvest to plate. 🧺 This morning’s haul filled the trug with potatoes, chard, tomatoes, peppers, chillies, cucumbers, raspberries and basil. Not bad for a few hours of digging, picking and trying not to eat the raspberries on the way home. #GreenHeart 💚

And this is how the trug got filled. A few clips from the morning harvest - picking, digging and gathering everything while it was at its best. 🔴🌾🥬🥒🥕🫑🌶️ #GYO

Our latest recipe is heatwave-approved! 🥵🍒 We harvested our allotment-grown black cherries to churn this fresh black cherry vanilla ice cream. It’s the perfect reward for this hot weather. Is it ice cream for lunch weather where you are? 🍦 #SummerVibes
