I design games, especially tabletop roleplaying games (Cthulhu Dark, Cosmic Dark). I also write books on storytelling (Play Unsafe) and drift into interactive fiction (39 Steps) and LARP (Will That Be All). And I love theatre, art and history.

The scheduling demons deploy their twice yearly bullshit to throw off your gaming plans. Don't let them win! Clocks went back last night in European timezones. This makes time differences wobbly for a while. Always try to use unicodes (like hammer.time or Discords @time function) to avoid mix ups!

It's lovely to see Cosmic Dark in this list, alongside two other games I've heard good things about.

Here are the top three scariest games we carry (in my humble opinion)! Just in time for spooky season. All these games and more are available on our website, the link is in our bio! #spookyseason #horrorgame #ttrpg #ttrpgtok #ttrpgcommunity

NEW OPPORTUNITY: Short fiction writer? Love the world of Heaven's Vault? ... then come play in the waters. We're looking to commission 20 short stories set in the Nebula for a new anthology. Paid, obvs. Full details and a link to the form on the blog: www.inklestudios.com/2026/10/24/t...

This event at Eclectic Games, about ancient games, looks incredible. I can't be there, because it clashes with AdventureX, but I hope it happens again.

The Game Design Masterclass, my high-energy three-hour crash course in making games, is coming to Eclectic Games in Reading on Saturday 7th November for a special session, part of the #BeingHuman festival. The event is all day, I'll be there in the afternoon www.eclecticgames.co.uk/s/being-huma...

Alien Archaeology was a fascinating challenge to design. In it, you decode an actual language, which tells you things about the past. That's hard in a TTRPG, because it comes up against the puzzle problem: how do you avoid players getting frustrated because they can't work out the solution?

One problem is that you do want players to have the experience of decoding the language, working out what each character means and so on. It's less fun to just give them the answer. So how do you calibrate that, so they don't get frustratingly stuck?

James also writes The Weird Stuff, so keep an eye on this distinctly weird-sounding project.

Just solved a game design problem in my latest project while in the bathroom not thinking about anything very much except shaving. The unconscious mind, wow, it has no idea how to pick its moment. This is for Carol of Duty, if anyone's keeping track, a one-session RPG where you play Spec Ops Elves,

This is a fascinating article. Mark was around in the 2000-2010 indie golden age, but Magpie has grown hugely and does licences now. ("Golden age" is half-ironic, but also half not, because...that's how...halves work.)

Hey, the CMU Press Games series is live. We've been planning this for a couple years, but it's amazing to be at this point. Submit your Anthropocene-themed games about humans + nonhumans + technology in our weird (post)modern/future times, for a new *peer-reviewed* anthology series.

Announcing the newest peer-reviewed series for Carnegie Mellon University Press: games! This week during @meaningfulplay.bsky.social, we're launching our first-ever CFG (call for games) for Promptuary, a playable anthology. www.cmu.edu/university-p... #boardgames #tabletopgaming #stayanalog

I'm writing Alien Archaeology, which is a really beautiful thing to write. I am perhaps milking all the different descriptions of light. Light here, light there, prismatic light refracting through stuff, pools of light like spotlights, etc etc.

As you can see (ought to have posted this myself really) we programmed a horror movie narrative into our injury/trauma results as determined by which archetype you’re playing

It's a hidden gem of design for a horror RPG!

You know how people double fry chips, or double butter toast, well, I’ve just double boiled some green beans and I can’t wait to taste the results

I've often thought that, if you design a game around "10+ success, 7-9 success with complications, 6- bad", you're missing the stuff that makes Apocalypse World great. (I think something similar if you simply translate the original AW moves to a new setting, although there's less of that now.)

lumpley@lumpley.bsky.social

15 years ago when Apocalypse World was new and people were beginning to understand and work with it, it was seductive to look at "acting under fire" and see, not one basic move of several, but the template underlying all the game's moves. Like @kierongillen.bsky.social 's classic gag:

In the early days after AW was published, it felt as though there was a rush to translate it over to all the major genres. There weren't exactly games called Cowboy World, Zombie World and Action World, but it felt like that. There's less of that now.
