To finish the quote from yesterday's post. 'Never doubt that a small group of commited citizens can change the world-indeed its the only thing that ever has.' Margaret Mead 1901-1978. Think of the March from Selma to Montgomery 1965. John Lewis, Martin Luther King Amelia Boynoton. They never quit.

Gray’s musings 💙📚 Margaret Mead believed our behaviour is shaped by culture, not biology. I agree - we have toxic leaders shaping a toxic culture where bullies and cruelty is in vogue. Her words. ‘Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Maybe we can.

Gray’s musings 💙📚 Twenty-five years ago today 38 aircraft carrying 6,656 strangers landed in Gander NL. A small town opened its homes & hearts. People cooked for strangers, made beds for strangers, listened to strangers. No politics. No questions. Just kindness. That is truly being Canadian.

Gray’s musings 💙📚 I recall 10 years ago today I was in Aleppo as a volunteer paramedic. A chlorine bomb was dropped on civilians. Choking and burnt parents carried choking burnt children into the ER. Some memories can not be erased. President Assad now lives in Russia. Monsters hiding monsters.

Gray’s musings 💙📚 I wonder what the USA would look like if it spent less on bombs and more on schools, libraries and the arts. Education creates informed citizens. Informed citizens demand better from their leaders. Education is the investment the US has neglected most. Elect a clown get a circus.

Gray’s musings 💙📚 The most asked question I get. What took me into aid work? That's easy, I grew up privileged in an underprivileged part of the world. What kept me there was leaving a child to die because it wasn’t in my mandate to evacuate locals. For two decades, I tried to make peace with that.

Gray’s musings 💙📚 I have worked many sites like the Nepal disaster now unfolding. Folk tend to watch it on TV then turn it off. Perhaps because suffering is easier to witness when it happens somewhere else, to someone else. But suffering has never respected borders. Neither should our compassion.

Gray’s musings 💙📚 I thought I was writing a story about being a humanitarian aid worker. Somewhere along the way, I realized I was also writing my truth. The characters say things I didn't know I was carrying, ask questions I've avoided, and sometimes reveal things I wasn't ready to see.

Gray’s musings 💙📚 Writing today it struck me.Perhaps we don't heal by leaving our past behind. Perhaps we heal by learning to carry it differently. The scars remain, the memories too but somewhere down the road we discover they no longer dictate our destination. Difficult? Yes! Worth it? Absolutely!

Gray’s musings 💙📚 Once upon a time I thought changing the world meant doing something extraordinary. Two decades in aid work + age remedied that. Sometimes it's just noticing another person is hurting and stopping. We cannot change the world but we can make a difference in someone's world if we try.

Gray’s musings 💙📚 As I wrote this morning, I realized we talk about surviving as though the story ends when the danger does. It doesn’t. Sometimes survival is waking up the following day and learning how to carry what happened without letting it define everything that comes after.

Gray's musings 💙📚 I apologize if my previous post was disturbing. It shocked me too when I saw the numbers in my inbox today. I personally was a statistic a number of years ago. I got out, others did not. Aid workers are the invisible lifelines to thousands who have lost hope.

Gray's musings 💙📚 2026 Aid Workers Security Database. Findings for 2025. State detentions of aid workers 280. Aid workers killed 350. Wounded 322. Kidnapped 235. I have known some of those numbers. They were never numbers to us. They had names, were friends and they mattered.

Gray's musings 💙📚 Mistakes made are human. Refusing to admit it is something else. Is changing our minds a weakness? Or is the courage to say "I got it wrong” one of our greatest strengths? A decision, a belief, or how we voted, to change our minds when the evidence changes takes courage not shame.

Gray's musings 💙📚 During the Q&A sessions after my talks, I field a lot of questions on how aid workers are killed, by whom and why. These statistics are people, each a story, and a life interrupted. I will remember them, not for what happened to them, but for why they were there in the first place.

Gray's musings 💙📚 Last night I again stood before a hall full of strangers to talk about my book. The book was almost incidental. What I witnessed was humanity, community, caring the genuine feeling of empathy for aid workers. I arrived humbled at the crowd size and left grateful and hopeful.

Grays musings 💙📚 In the news this morning, the Beckham family "woes." And this is news worthy? Sudan 12 million displaced, Gaza 2 million, Ukraine 9.6 million. When did we stop caring about real issues. That is the entire population of Australia in refugee camps. Take some time to let that sink in.

Gray's musings.💙📚 As I get ready for another town hall book talk. People often ask if the events in Meet Me in Zanzibar really happened. Many did. I wrote it from my journals as a tribute to the 7,840 aid workers killed, abducted or injured. Their only crime was showing up when somebody needed help.

Grays musings 💙📚 Every number had a name, a family a community. All left with a void because someone cared enough to help Humanitarian work is carried out in places where violence is not an abstraction but a daily reality. Humanitarian workers deserve protection under international humanitarian law.

Grays musings 💙📚 An adventurous week filled with misadventures - or life just doing what it does, I made it home. A beautiful sunrise over a calm ocean in a calm land. Most do not truly know how fortunate we are. We fear not being bombed, we wake with our buildings intact - our kids safe. We're okay

Grays musings 💙📚 Far from home working on my new book. 'The Weight of the Light.' Before I left on this ride, I suffered from writers block and emotional setbacks from revisiting the trauma and writing about it. Seeing Europe through the visor, the warmth of the people has inspired me to finish.

Grays musings 💙📚 Far from home on the Portuguese coast I am reeling at the latest ICE killing. Is ICE a 21st Century posses for a weak government with no accountability for excessive violence? This is not the Wild West. Have we not learned anything. Another child orphaned, a wife widowed.

Grays musings 💙📚 Taking a break from writing as I ride through Spain still searching for peace after years as a volunteer humanitarian aid worker. Coming home was easy. Learning how to live with the memories, the compassion fatigue and survivors guilt was more dangerous than anything I ever survived

Grays musings 💙📚 Just a somber reminder regarding my last post. When I published Meet Me in Zanzibar in 2025, 7840 Aid Workers and their families were affected by their tragedies. A year later, as I write, The Weight of the Light, another 500, have been killed, and 389 have been injured.

Grays musings. 💙📚 Sobering questions I have pondered when I worked in disaster zones and refugee camps. What would you carry if you could only take one bag? How bad would tomorrow have to look for a tent to feel like hope? What does "home" mean when you've lost everything including hope?

Gray's musings. 💙📚 Continuing on yesterdays post. It took 29 years for 7,840 aid workers to be killed, abducted or injured worldwide. More than 500 aid workers have been killed in Gaza in two years and eight months. Numbers tell stories too. We should listen. Facts at- www.aidworkersecurity.org

I published my debut novel Meet Me in Zanzibar which was inspired by years working as an aid pilot and emergency medical technician in some of the world's most unstable regions. It is not a book about traditional heroes but an ode to all aid workers who dare to make the world a kinder safer place.

My new novel. The Weight of the Light is about what happens after coming home and struggling with compassion fatigue and PTSD. A motorcycle journey through the Americas in search of peace, healing, and finding a way to belong in a normal world after feeling like jigsaw piece in the wrong puzzle.

As I wrote today I wondered. Was I running from normal life, or running towards disasters because I could make a difference in a dysfunctional world. The hardest part of healing isn't knowing where you're going. It's recognising why you keep moving.

Musings as I write. The older I get,the more I believe civilization is not measured by wealth or power but how we treat the vulnerable. I sometimes worry that cruelty is once again being mistaken for strength and empathy for weakness. History has taught us much, yet we keep forgetting.

Gray's Musings. Writing today, I was reminded that life has an uncanny habit of placing a stranger in your path just when you need one. A person with a story or simply a kind word. We rarely know the difference we have made on another's journey. So, err on the side of positivity and kindness often.

Gray's musings. Fate puts you in the path of someone that under normal circumstances you would not have met. They might need your help, your choice help or not. This little girl, 8 years old had been shot in the head. Twelve hours later I had a decision to make. Today she is 20. Happy birthday.

Grays musings 💙📚 After years of working to save others in catastrophic arenas, the toughest battle I ever fought was saving myself. Saving ourselves is a war worth fighting for. To care about yourself and make sure you are okay is the greatest battle you are ever going to fight.

Gray's musings. 💙📚 We often celebrate the people who carry others through dark times. We rarely ask who carries them. Perhaps being understood is one of the greatest kindnesses we can offer another human being.

Gray's musings. 💙📚 As I wrote from my journals today. Cameron LA 2016. I met a grizzled old Korean war survivor, also survived three hurricanes, owned a two pump gas station, lived in an Airstream. He’d seen it all. His words. ‘Resilience’ is just a fancy word for ‘ain’t got no damn choice.

💙📚 #booksky Gray's musings. Today I poured a glass of clean water. I am lucky. 2.2 billion people, or 1 in 4 don't have that luxury. Birthright is a lottery & we won. We aren't dealing with famine, starvation & our kids are not dying from contaminated water. It's difficult to witness first hand.

Gray's musings. 💙📚 I've spent my life running towards emergencies, never quite knowing what will happen when I get there. People are struggling and we need to be patient, kind and never forget this. 'Those who know don’t judge and those who judge don’t know'. Say something nice to a stranger today.

Grays musings. 💙📚 Sobering questions I have pondered when I worked in disaster zones and refugee camps. What would you carry if you could only take one bag? How bad would tomorrow have to look for a tent to feel like hope? What does "home" mean when you've lost everything including hope?

💙📚Gray's Musings. In a refugee camp near the DRC & Sudan border, I met two boys carrying one bag and some photographs of their family. Now dead. They had walked for days through the desert. Their world now reduced to photographs and memories. I wonder what memory I would carry across a desert?
