#NaturalCapital & #NatureMarkets are completing the bullshit, offset-brainrot loop for "AI philanthropy" jfc

John Kostyack@kostyack.bsky.social

Having worked for and with NGOs and foundations for most my career, I can't even begin to grapple with what NGO advocacy would look like if most philanthropic support was coming from Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Dario Amodei and their ilk.

Fierce community backlash over data centre impacts on energy, water, environment, health, & amenity works‼️ Join the community rally against NextDC's proposed M4 data centre right next to Westgate Park (Melbourne) 31 Oct: 1pm picnic/ BBQ 2pm walk to NextDC M4 site Register if you'd like lunch👇👇

A pretty big win for anti-data centre activists in Melbourne: protests over huge new power lines for Nextdc’s M3 project forced Jemena to pause works in Sept. Nextdc says that delayed power to the site. Today it cut FY27 earnings guidance by about a third and halted new projects and land buys.

IAPB's session this Sunday at #COP17 unsurprisingly focused on creating"comfort and derisking for the buyer," (aka the State takes the risk, private investors get the profits), on the need to "simplify the rules so that it works for the market." 1/4

or distinguishing 3 types of additionality (ecological, financial, regulatory) to try and make us forget that maintenance credits have zero ecological additionality. Of course, left unsaid is the fact that projects/credits with financial additionality but no ecological additionality 3/4

- i.e. raising additional capital for zero ecological impact - are a waste of money. Last, a key takeaway from an audience member was that creating a framework with high multiples and a serious attempt at integrity would not only be unprofitable but a financial black hole. 4/4

The IAPB also explained that "we want to ensure high integrity but on the other hand we do not want to exclude anyone", plus some linguistic acrobatics to try and obfuscate some of the framework's issues, including renaming ex ante credits as certificates, 2/4

💥 In 2 weeks, communities & campaign groups across Europe will take action to Stop Dirty Data Centres. "It's our land, our water, our electricity and our health" - and it's time to stand together against Big Tech's big resource grab. 💪 Check out for more info+how to get involved on 6-7 November 👇

As #cop17Armenia begins, the Global Forest Coalition, the Global Youth Biodiversity Network, the Green Finance Observatory, the Rainforest Action Network and the Third World Network published a short briefing paper. In it, we reiterate our strong rejection of biodiversity credits and offsets 1/3

and make the following clarifications regarding dubious claims about these schemes: 1. There will be no biodiversity credit market without offsets in most cases 2. The IAPB, BCA and WEF framework is NOT a high-integrity framework 2/3

– the framework allows multinational corporations to operate business as usual across countries by offsetting within an undefined “local area”; – it allows ex-ante credits, before any positive impact has been measured; – it introduces maintenance credits that have no ecological additionality; 3/5

In particular, we find that: – the framework fails to address the root causes of biodiversity loss; – the fact that market solutions are most often used against, rather in complement to other policy tools is ignored; 2/5

So we'll see a lot of talk about it, to keep the social licence to operate of harmful industries and data centres/AI, but imo the price of offset credits will never rise significantly, nor will biodversity credits ever generate significant revenues. 12

One might question the sustainability claims of a #financialisation of forests and farmland however, and might do well to remember the impact of agricultural commodity derivatives speculation on the 2007/2008 food crisis. 9/9

Another interesting element imo is the fact that I don't see the political will to make these markets ever scale and actually function. As long as they occupy the public and media space, and thus give the illusion that the issue is being addressed without changing our unsustainable paradigms, 10

While the focus for now is on forests, "from 2027, Crédit Agricole Capital Naturel will gradually expand its scope to other essential components of #NaturalCapital, including #water and #biodiversity." The arguments put forward are that the Capital Naturel initiative meets the growing needs of: 2/9

I love this slide. I really don't think the geopolitical implications of the clean energy transition have sunk in for most people.
