June 27, 2023. The day we brought her home from the hospital after a 3 day stay. She couldn’t breathe or walk. We thought we’d lose her. They worked a miracle and got her back home. That’s our daughter hugging her while we all cried tears of joy. This has been pinned over there since that day 🐾❤️

Going for my birthday in 2 weeks. Pan-Fried Dumplings with “Wings,” Hand folded with house-made dumpling dough made with organic flour, filling features ground pork shoulder, and fresh onion & garlic, served with mustard frills, scallions & ginger shoyu dipping sauce🥟

Watching this morning. A rare personal share. Back when I worked in film we had a chance to help finance one of Matthew’s films. It was a passion project of his. One that would finally put him and his dad, John, together on screen. We went to LA to meet with him. 1/3

his dad and director Robert Zemeckis. Lots of back & forth but we were optimistic. But once we started pitching it to foreign distributors, they said no until we ousted the female lead, Daryl Hannah. Matthew’s dad, John, called me saying they’d pitch it to Diane Lane. 2/3

John said he literally showed up at Diane’s house and handed her the script himself. She read it and passed. It would’ve been a great low budget romance set in a small town. And I’ve often wondered what would’ve changed if he’d gotten to make that with his dad. 🤷‍♂️💔 3/3

During the height of the Kincade fire 7 years ago today, most of us lost power. Thankfully we had a gas range, so it was pull something out of the freezer that might go bad (chicken) and dig into the canned goods. Cooking by candlelight.

FB food memories: French dip on Costco baguettes with homemade beef stock. Every Halloween we sit on the porch eating dinner & drinking wine while handing out candy. I pitched this to my wife, or a pork chili verde stew. She’s undecided. Personally I’d be fine with either.

FB food memories: Ironic that this morning I sent Michelle off with enchiladas for the entire radiology department, that this memory would pop up. When I sent her off with butterscotch pot de creme for the radiology department (pictured is 1/3 of what she took to them)

First of 6 pans. Second one in, rest are ready to go. Then they cool, then they get wrapped, then I’m probably close to being drunk and watching some inane BS on tv. And since you’re probably wondering, I’m baking these 1 pan at a time in our countertop convection oven. 🤷‍♂️

I made salsa verde for the enchiladas for my wife’s radiology department

One of my best friends since childhood was born in Buffalo but moved out here when he was a kid. Lifelong pastor. Great guy. But a Bills fan. About once a month I’ll comment with this on one of his posts that has NOTHING to do with the Bills. Because that’s what friends do 😂😂

October 25, 1994. Our ship was plane guard for the USS Lincoln off the coast of San Diego. Kara’s F-14 flew over our bridge on track for the flight deck. Then shit went sideways. Her RIO safely ejected, but she didn’t until her plane was inverted. A dark moment. ⚓️💔

I’m not a baker. Making croutons yesterday I realized we have so many remnants of sourdough in the freezer, so last night I ordered this. Today I find out my wife & daughter ordered me a Le Creuset cast iron bread oven for my birthday. I screwed up my own birthday gift 🙄😂

Yeah, I know the color isn’t the best. But the flavor was amazing. Buttermilk potato soup with shredded chicken thigh meat and bacon. Topped with homemade rosemary croutons and fresh herbs from the garden.

My day was going great! My wife called asking if I need her to get anything on her way home. I said no… Her: So you have everything for the enchiladas? Me: What enchiladas?? Her: You said you’d make enchiladas for the entire radiology department for Monday… Me: I did?? 😳

FB food memories: When I was making 100 lbs of bacon a month, I’d occasionally slice off a chunk after curing, and instead of putting in the smoker, I’d score it and put it in the countertop convection oven. So great in many different dishes.

We sure did enjoy our daughter playing volleyball all 4 years of HS. Many friendships formed with other parents. I tried my best to get some pics of our daughter serving. This, perhaps, might be my best. Both feet off the court, in full serving motion ❤️

4 years ago today. This badass fighter pilot (I’m guessing AF since we have a big base nearby, but who knows?) came screaming in off the coast, and then shot straight vertical while we watched (I wasn’t driving, my wife was). Loved seeing this in the Navy ⚓️❤️

Nothing revolutionary here. Just chicken thighs that marinated all day, in a basket over chopped potatoes mixed with onions, olive oil and my go to seasoning. If you haven’t tried this, I recommend it. As the chicken cooks the fat drops onto the potatoes & onions.

FB food memories: 2 years ago our favorite local steakhouse was closing after 54 years. We made sure we went one last time right before they shuttered. Of course I got my regular porterhouse & twice baked potato along with salad & baked beans

My wife has taken a new shift that changes constantly (before she takes over the M-F lead position). I can’t keep track. She’s off today. All morning I’m thinking it’s Saturday so I’m wondering where are all the college football games?!?! Oh yeah, it’s Friday 🙄

I texted my Coastie neighbor & his wife saying I left 2 quarts of soup & 4 buttermilk biscuits on your porch. He immediately replied saying we’re bringing stuff over to you tomorrow! True neighborly love!

My wife once asked my brother how long it takes him to put the suit on. He said “I don’t. Why bother? If a bomb explodes while I’m trying to disarm it, that suit won’t save me, so I’d might as well be comfortable while I’m working!”

I was kind of annoyed that the VA scheduled my exam at 9 AM in Sausalito. Thankfully traffic wasn’t ‘too’ bad, but I sure was happy when I left her office at 10:15. It was gridlock for a 17 mile stretch heading south. Something happened but I couldn’t see what it was.

It’s seems that our daughter will never stop surprising us. She texted us earlier today asking if she could study abroad next summer. We asked where, she said in Germany. I mean, wow, she is really going for it!

I started the pork stock last night with leftover baby back rib bones while I charred 2 yellow onions, removed the bones and added the onions, immersion blended, then added the rest of the our rainbow carrots, red potatoes and fresh corn shaved off the cob. Overnight in the crockpot. Delicious!

FB has this annoying “Suggested for you” thing. Thankfully this woman turned off her commenting. No, you’re not “exploring Napa valley” if you’re going to V. Sattui. That’s the biggest tourist trap in the entire valley 🙄

As a father who has never had to deal with losing a child, I’m incredibly impressed with CJ’s strength and what it took to simply write this book about such a profound personal loss. I will start reading it tomorrow, and I encourage others to do the same ❤️

I distinctly remember this day. It was a Sunday (my Friday at the restaurant) and I’d just gotten my ass kicked for the last 5 days. Got home, showered, cracked open a beer. The plan was just to watch some football and unwind. Her expression said “I don’t fucking think so!” 🙄😂
