25 Oct 1812 // 38-gun frigate HMS Macedonian was captured off Madeira by American 44-gun frigate USS United States. During the battle the British frigate was overwhelmed by the more powerful and longer-range guns carried by her opponent. She was almost fully dismasted in the first exchange of fire.

I've been looking forward to the release of this book... Earl Hess - thoughtful and thought provoking from the start... #Histbookchat #PhotoFriday

In Hess' view, the 4 men who held that role for the Union were a mixed bag in filling the roles, with Grant coming closest to filling them all well (with Halleck handling much of the administrative load).

Hess also argues that the misinterpretation of the General in Chief role overall has contributed to inaccurate evaluations of the men who filled the position.

Hess argues that the role of General in Chief during the American Civil War was misunderstood - it was not a true Commander in Chief (that role reserved to POTUS), but rather managing multiple different roles.

"Ordinarily, moving historical items within the building is a deliberate process overseen by trained curators. Instead, Hegseth’s staff dispatched its own team to relocate an Eisenhower globe. They lost control of the artifact and dropped it..." wapo.st/3WF2YQo

I had not realized that D. H. Hill launched an earlier, Lost Cause friendly precursor to Garden and Gun magazine titled: The Land we Love: A monthly magazine devoted to Literature, Military History, and Agriculture (From Chris Hartley's fine bio of D. H. Hill) #Histbookchat

Max Boot at the Southern Festival of Books - Reagan's time GE played a major role in his transition in politics from New Deal Democrat to Republican and his development as a public speaker. #SouthernFestivalofBooks

Author Lindsay Owens - market concentration increases the impact of the dynamic pricing, and also notes that AI can be used to coordinate pricing. #southernfestivalofbooks

Lindsay Owens - company patents offer insights into future trends. One example is a Walmart patent that would for instance raise the price of mayonnaise if a shopper has tuna in their cart. #Southernfestivalofbooks

Lindsay Owens at the Southern Festival of Books - the increasing use of dynamic pricing not only can raise prices, but also increase price volatility and reduce transparency. #SouthernFestivalofBpoks

I'm late posting, but adding some sports history for #PhotoFriday - the history of one of the most talented and interesting teams in NBA history... #Histbookchat

Outside of current events and the most intense years of the Korean Conflict, I have limited knowledge of history of modern divided Korea, so looking to learn a little more. #PhotoFriday #Histbookchat

Tossing open this week’s NFL Mailbag! 📪 Fire away with your questions, I’ll pose them to NFL Scouts, Coaches, Executives, Agents and sources across the league to include their insights in Friday’s column at Between The Hashmarks!

This was my first time reading one of Robert Stern's books. I thought it was pretty good - solid writing, good use of primary sources, good selection of secondary sources, perspective from both Japanese and US sides. #Histbookchat #PhotoFriday #navalhistory

In this period of American history, I thought it would be particularly worthwhile to brush up on this topic. #Histbookchat #PhotoFriday

Sen. Susan Collins helped steer millions in federal defense contracts to Navatek, whose CEO illegally funneled thousands of dollars to her campaign. The FBI sought to launch a probe and was eyeing Collins and other lawmakers. Then Trump gutted the unit in charge. THREAD 🧵

I enjoy good biography, but I especially appreciate when biographers take on challenging subjects (e.g., Martin - Benedict Arnold; Hess - Braxton Bragg). I don't think D. H. Hill rises to that level, but he was often contentious and doesn't fall into that group of appreciated ACW figures...

Like Chamberlain, Stuart, and Jackson. As an added bonus for me, Hill has ties to parts of NC close to where I grew up - Lincolnton, Davidson College. I'm enjoying the book - Hartley is a good researcher and very good writer. #PhotoFriday #Histbookchat

A little late for #PhotoFriday - I made it to the East Tennessee History Museum and picked up a couple of books from the museum bookstore. #Histbookchat

Interesting item for me in Chris Hartley's bio of D H Hill - I hadn't known about Hood's early ACW cavalry service or D. H. Hill's impact on his early career trajectory. #Histbookchat

It was interesting to me for 2 reasons: * It is part of the larger WW2/SWW start date debate * The discussion of the politics of memory behind the change

I'm enjoying Chris Hartley's new bio on D. H. Hill. I'm thankful he included some examples from Hill's infamous algebra textbook. #Histbookchat

Nice to have a history book that also aligns with your work - I'm enjoying gaining insight and background into the famous Kelo case. #Histbookchat #PhotoFriday

Some sports history for #PhotoFriday I'm more of a casual football/soccer fan, but I heard an interview with the author and heard familiar names like Clint Mathis and Josh Wolff and decided to pick this up. I'm enjoying it. #Histbookchat
