Dr. Mfoniso-Antia Chris of Health of mother earth foundation/HOMEF adds that geoengineering, particularly Solar Radiation Modification (SRM), represents an attempt to manipulate the Earth’s systems at a planetary scale without addressing the root cause of the crisis — fossil fuel emissions.

Africa's own climate plans point in a different direction. The 51 national climate plans (Nationally Determined Contributions, or NDCs) that African countries have submitted under the Paris Agreement focus mostly on protecting ecosystems and cutting emissions, not large-scale planetary intervention.

✊🏽Latin America and Global South rejects geoengineering. In the lead-up to #COP31, listen to Gina Cortes Valderrama of The Women and Gender Constituency saying: “Geoengineering is not a fix to climate change. Latin America and the Global South are not laboratories."

➡️ Technologies that can wreak havoc on the climate system with potential termination shock. ➡️ Only a temporary fix with barely any oversight of private players. ➡️ Funding targeted at developing the technologies for deployment regardless of the consequences.

"Self-determination should not mean self destruction..." IEN's Geoengineering Outreach Organizer, Aakaluk A. Blatchford, stood outside the Harpa convention center during Arctic Circle Assembly to call out the dangerous schemes being proposed in order to continue fossil fuel extraction.

➡️ Assess the project against real-world conditions, not simply methodological compliance on paper. ➡️ Take corrective action—including revocation of credits—if the evidence shows that requirements were not met or that the credits do not represent genuine and verifiable emissions reductions.

There are also serious concerns about the project’s emissions calculations, monitoring and verification, safeguards and stakeholder participation. The first activity to receive credits under Article 6.4 is therefore a crucial test of the mechanism’s claim to “high integrity”.
