IMO a problem in planning is everyone is acting like it's 2019 when every developer was dying to build in cities, materials were cheap and stuff like lab space was in huge demand. None of that really applies anymore but no one seems to recognize it

Boston’s chief planner is a true believer in the San Francisco model, in which you make it impossible to profitably build apartments by-right so developers are forced into a politicized discretionary negotiation with the city, which relaxes the rules in exchange for below-market units.

What's frustrating is when I talk to planning department people at the community facing level they're saying so the right things about reducing parking requirements, relaxing zoning etc. Boston has 2 really promising neighborhood zoning initiatives ongoing

I imagine the DNC/Dems at large can't really crack down on actual campaigns like Healy fundraising, but they probably can and should successfully lean on ActBlue to cut off most PACs, and ban campaigns from selling fundraising lists to anyone but other campaigns

Matthew Yglesias @mattyglesias.bsky.social

I don't think there is any reason why giving through a PAC would ever be optimal for small donors and anyone doing online PAC fundraising should be viewed as presumptively suspect. www.slowboring.com/p/scammy-fun...

it continues to be funny to me when i hear people go "but obviously these dsa types just want to destroy the market and implement stalinism" while, meanwhile, they are actually *more* pro-market than the mainline democrat incumbents they're challenging

California YIMBY@cayimby.bsky.social

LA mayoral candidate Nithya Raman says fewer than 10% of new LA homes are for sale because for-sale projects face higher fees, tougher approvals, easier appeals, and greater liability risk. www.realtor.com/news/real-es...

This to me is kind of terrible strategy: incumbent governors should already have healthy warchests to really on, and prioritizing outgoing D seats over all offensive chances is going to have a lot of poor tradeoffs (though it does explain sinking money into Maine over GA/TX)

The NYT reporting on US war planning suggests the administration is truly lost in the sauce with Iran. How could you possibly think a three day campaign would bring Iran to its knees given everything that's happened in the last 6 months?

Beshear needs to step up and funnel more money to Hinojosa quickly, because her losing by 2 points or less without outside support and it probably kills whatever chance he had at the nomination

Idle thoughts: it's interesting Dems are only at 49% ad share in Kansas where Marshall has raised no money- maybe a lot of coordinated buys? Maine is surpsing too, I thought Jackson quickly out raised Collins. Also interesting to see Dems basically at parity in MI/IA, and OH.

The Downballot@the-downballot.com

AdImpact underscoring a point that we can't emphasize enough: Ad dollars are not the same as ad *views*. Dems are getting better bang for their buck because candidates are entitled to the lowest ad rates by law. Super PACs have to pay market rates. x.com/AdImpact_Pol...

The Trump administration is such a target rich environment for corruption I think Dems can spend the next two years going after people like Grenell in ways that continually weakens Trump

Tom Hearden@followtheh.bsky.social

Oh. Grennell was selling access.

It's fascinating in both '22 and '24 the gap in infrequent voters between parties was negligible, but this year there's a huge gap

Another update of ncearly.peark.es: Dems continue to blow the doors off while Republicans are running below 2022 levels. Latino early vote ballots approaching *2024* levels, Dems are crushing the low propensity turnout battle, and are seeing a higher share of ballots than 2022 almost everywhere.

I do think there's an opportunity for at least some bipartisan action on the anti-corruption front come 2029: there's already some anti-stock trading action in Congress that could get strengthened without Trump's interference, and I think a lot of GOP anger at his corruption can get harnessed

Dems are benefiting right now and that’s good, but they do need a real genuine “we hear you” in 2028 and then they have to deliver materially in 2029

You also can probably get some meaningful reform to stuff like the pardon process. There's a tough balance of finding things to unilaterally "disarm" on, but you want to find ways to handcuff future GOP admins from taking advantage of, and pardons is low hanging fruit

Replying to @purrtah.bsky.social

It’s why I think Kamala isn’t necessarily a mistake but would be a missed opportunity currently. Somebody completely fresh, a clean break who can genuinely tap into the anger in a way that transcends ideology

I honestly think a big problem for Susan Collins is that she's been in the Senate for so long she's completely lost in the sauce. She speaks in Senate minutiae that no voter cares about or actively hates (see her exchange about road salt tariffs), but this is the only way she can communicate now

danny@dabbs346.bsky.social

YIKES #mesen #mepolitics

Collins's other weakness is she appears extremely stubborn. Admitting that RFK Jr or Kavanaugh were bad votes that she regrets would probably help her, but she can't admit an error. She also her bringing back road salt up again after getting beaten down by it

If you want to forestall future mid-decade redistricting, you really want someone like Murphy to lose. Accidentally blowing up existing congressmen's seats is the best way to prevent this going forward

More ads from GOP incumbent Murphy in NC03, this comes after more GOP has flooded into the seat and Dems have been spending there as well They made NC03 quite a bit bluer so they could take down Don Davis in NC01 and it very well might backfire

Dems need to cancel that $11 million in future outside spending and move all of it immediately elsewhere to Kansas, Iowa, Texas, or even seeding a little bit in a reach state like South Carolina. Dems need that money to help balance out GOP advantages everywhere else

It truly drives me crazy that Wu came into office with solid urban liberal beliefs (increase zoning, more support for BRT, bike lanes, etc), blew out the opposition, and then... Walked away from all those plans

Housing is another example- Squares and Streets did two neighborhoods but has seemingly stalled out with ~12 more squares to go. They should be doing 4+ neighborhoods a year, even the zoning board called for it to move faster!

There's this strange contradiction in her second term, I think partially because while she has become overly cautious she has staffed her admin with a lot of well meaning people who can still make improvements

i do think that texas is central to the contemporary conservative imaginary, and when they lose it this fall it is causing to lead to some truly demented reactions from the reactionverse

NYT polls have always been level headed, and IMO this lines up with where I think we're ultimately headed: Dems winning the Senate but without a complete rout with 53+ seats

Dj@djsoke.bsky.social

NYT/Siena in AK: Peltola +7 | JKT + 4 | Begich +6 TX: Talarico + 6 | Hinojosa +4 OH: Brown +3 | Acton +4 IA: Hinson +1 | Sand +11 KS: Sen Tied | Gov: Masterson +4

Alaska might honestly be close to selling out their ad space (it's happened before), and if GA/NC are off the board then Dems should be plowing all their remaining PAC money to Texas, Kansas, Maine, Ohio, and Michigan. Maybe some dark money for NE/SD/ID if they're feeling spicy

Rufo got away with taking a hammer to DEI/universities in general, but going forward how can you not mention this insanely racist screed anytime he comes up?

Ghostship Chronos says TRANS RIGHTS@airshipchronos.bsky.social

I'm so glad the 4th Estate loves this guy who's openly calling for ethnic cleansing. He definitely deserves column inches and attention and praise.

Disgusting racism aside, this feels extremely self-defeating by Rufo, who seems to have largely gotten away with his facade of "anti-DEI intellectual". It's a real mask-off moment for how racist his goals really are

it’s genuinely fascinating how establishment democratic politics in big cities has become so ossified and incompetent that they’ve created a huge lane for the left to embrace good government reforms and build a broad coalition of socialists and technocrats

Jason Linkins@dceiver.bsky.social

"We're told some of the attendees were shocked the former Republican governor would host Raman, a democratic socialist. But after hearing her pitch for tackling L.A.'s problems, some who came in skeptical walked away impressed." www.tmz.com/2026/09/25/a...

The biggest fear I have at the moment this election is that Dems come up just short in a few governor races like TX/GA that we'll look back at with regret on that more wasn't done

Aubrey Gilleran@aubreygilleran.bsky.social

Yikes. I think some people are overconfident that ad spending doesn't matter or that Ossoff will have sufficient coattails. Democrats need to lock in here.

If KLB loses this she should be persona non grata in the party. Jackson by all accounts is running a good campaign (and an insane amount of money), but you have to at least try

This post is unavailable.

If Cooper/Ossoff are winning by 10 some surprising stuff might happen with their state houses, and fringe House seats come into play, and makes the Georgia governor race an easier lift

This story might be a big deal for her because of how much it cuts against her core argument that she can bring home the bacon for Maine via her seniority

Don Moynihan@donmoyn.bsky.social

This seems like a pretty big deal: donors made illegal contributions to Susan Collins and then were awarded lucrative contracts after her office intervened with the Navy. An FBI investigation was dropped under Trump. www.propublica.org/article/fbi-...

I really doubt these numbers are legit, but it is supremely funny Sept 1 hit and every undecided voter simultaneously declared holy war against the GOP

Sam@samd.bsky.social

really feels like the bottom has completely fallen out for republicans over the past couple weeks
