I'm officially done with #startrek Strange New Worlds. A shame, really. Season 1 was so good! A breath of fresh air, in a franchise that had gone so far up its own ass. The episodic style was great. The Gorn had become truly creepy, instead of the goofy Gorn from TOS (it did terrify me as a kid.)

But this last season... it's half stunt episodes! A planet gets everyone high. The muppet episode, god help me. They can't work the controls with their muppet hands... haha! Okay it's over. Weird radiation makes everything into a black-and-white film-noir. Very clever. Sigh.

Then Trellaine shows up and makes everyone act like a soap opera. I turned it off. Not going to watch this. I'm out. I guess I'll never find out anything more about Spock's exceedingly complicated love life. Oh well.

But then they started the stunt episodes. The crossover with Lower Decks. Ok, a stunt episode once in a while, fine. A little self-parody, fine. Then the musical episode. I sat through it with gritted teeth. I hate musicals. I hate parodies of musicals.

How entirely unsurprising that a system designed, with the best of intentions, to prevent kids from buying marijuana, has failed in exactly the way doomsayers have warned that designed to stop kids using social media will fail. #cdnpoli

And, to extract spice, these leaked passports will provide kids with everything they need to circumvent the social media age-gates, and porn age-gates, and whatever else.

7 years ago today, I gave my most-viewed talk ever (12K views). My recent TEDx talk has more than doubled that video's viewership. I'm grateful for everyone who has taken time to watch and share "Escaping the Gun Debate Trap." I hope it makes some difference. youtu.be/BzB8MX4v8ko?...

Funny thing is if I ask ChatGPT for "The Ben Affleck smoking meme, but with the Statue of Liberty", it won't do it. It refuses to recreate a copyrighted image (I'm sure it would be fair use). But if I just upload the photo myself and say "Replace this man with the Statue of Liberty", it works.

Australia launches the biggest gun ban since their last big gun ban. If these changes are so necessary, why weren't they part of the last "reasonable compromise?" #guns #bondibeach

Meanwhile, Australia has, on average, 3.5 traffic fatalities every day, 365 days a year. A Bondi Beach massacre, every five days. But when a gun is involved... well that's a risk that just cannot be tolerated.

It's always the same raw deal. Gun owners lose freedom, and the public accepts the risk that remain. But the public never holds up their end of the bargain. They don't actually accept the risk at all.

Nice essay by sociologist David Yamane. Many non-gun-owners only ever think about the negative aspects of #guns. He has likened it to the parable of the three blind men and the elephant. Many people's impressions of the gun elephant are informed entirely by a detailed examination of its anus.

To fully appreciate why people own guns, we need to understand the individual & communal pleasures associated with shooting. These are the pleasures that led me to fall for guns. New essay in @contexts.org by @sagepub.com and @asanews.bsky.social. OPEN ACCESS: journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10....

If your entire understanding of elephants is that they're horrible things that occasionally dump gallons of shit on innocent children, then you'll never be able to find common ground with people who admire their cleverness, like to ride them, and use them to do hard work.

I haven't watched a lot of #RobertRedford 's movies. But I have to say, "All Is Lost" (2013) made an impression on me. Just one guy, alone, on a sinking sailboat in the middle of the ocean. Barely a word of dialog in the entire film. But it was gripping. Have to watch it again now.

Just saw a Tesla with a "This Tesla is not an endorsement of Elon Musk" bumper sticker. I feel sorry for them. It wasn't so long ago that far-right jacasses with their modded diesel trucks would "roll coal" on them because they hated the very idea of electric cars.

But then Elon Musk turned out to be a far-right jackass himself, and now far-left jackasses are vandalizing their cars. They just wanted to drive a nice car, and help the environment a bit. They didn't sign up for this crap.

Here's something I never thought I'd see: Chimay Trappist ale in a Sobeys grocery store. But I have to say, having now consumed it, Chimay Gold is not very, umm, Trappist. Much more of a mass-market style of beer. Kind of disappointing. #Chimay #beer

You are up to date.
