Maybe you've heard of virtual power plants before. Maybe you saw how outbound Gov. Newsom signed some VPP-friendly bills recently. Here's what's happening ⚡

VPPs are typically used when energy demand is extremely high. "However, as they mature into a more established asset for grid operators, we will likely see capacities continue to increase across California and the country," he said.

Many VPP efforts to date are demonstrations or otherwise limited in scope, yet total capacity in California is already close to *multiple gigawatts.*

"A Tesla-Sunrun VPP dispatched 580MW of peak power to California's grid in a recent heatwave, and Tesla currently has over 1.3GW of residential capacity deployed under its own VPP in California alone," Benchmark Mineral analyst Pete Tillotson told me.

Did gas vehicle sales just dip below 50% for the first time? In the first half of 2026, Nikkei Asia reports that sales of new gas-only models fell 10% year over year worldwide, to 20.25 million (citing Mobility Global). The report seems to exclude even plug-less hybrids such as Priuses — which,

The bottom line is soaring gas and diesel prices are destroying some demand for gas cars. Prices in the U.S. are up 39% for regular. But imagine living in Italy and paying around $10/gallon. That + subsidies in some EU states = an EV boom that makes up for sluggishness in the US

if we're being honest, are gas vehicles. The actual rise of *fully electric* vehicles will take longer, thanks a great deal to the early expiration of U.S. EV tax incentives last year. But EVs are still rising, & steep gas & diesel prices are accelerating the shift: www.investors.com/news/electri...

investors.comDid Gas Vehicle Sales Just Dip Below 50% For The First Time?Electric vehicles are rising: The latest EV sales reports diverge, but all signs point to soaring fuel prices destroying demand for gas cars.

Experts don't see the fuel crisis igniting a refinery boom tomorrow, especially not in the U.S. Why? Long-term demand for gas & diesel *isn't* really growing. But forecasts *do* show oil sticking around past 2050 (see also: shrinking U.S. EV forecasts)

Electric-vehicle sales in Europe were already soaring. Worth watching what happens for EV trucking. I'm also curious about the fate of diesel-burning data centers.

Golf Oil's Tom Kloza expects trucking and shipping firms to "pass along [price] increases to consumers." That points to costlier groceries and snacks, high-priced home goods, soaring heating bills, and caps on purchases of motor oil as refiners focus on diesel and gas.

Translation: No escape. Not from price hikes. Not from demand destruction, as folks turn to alternatives like EVs and heat pumps. The pressure comes as energy-efficient alternatives gain ground over fossil-fuel furnaces. Heat pump sales in the U.S. have doubled in the last 15 yrs.

Record prices ($6.45/gal U.S. average, $8.39 in California) are spilling everywhere — across supply chains, hitting farmers, truckers, railway companies, retailers, and grocers. The upshot will be even higher sticker prices, demand destruction, and wild profits for refineries.

Finally a look behind the curtain at Google's data center push in Arkansas — and the special rate it got from a local power company that's charging residents more — in accidentally disclosed documents: bsky.app/profile/matt...

As a DemGaz alum who now helps fight against these very sort of things, I hope it and the @arktimes.bsky.social fight back hard against this effort to obtain an unconstitutional prior restraint against their coverage of an issue of critical public concern.

In 2015, Google paid outside engineers and designers to prototype a living Tamagotchi-like game. It starred real(!) micro-animals you'd feed and observe via a digital microscope. No AI. In 2017, I profiled it — one of Google's last-ditch attempts to leapfrog the iPhone with Lego-like upgrades. 🧪

The living creatures I'm talking about here are tardigrades, aka water bears or moss piglets. But they weren't as resilient as the creative folks at Midnight Commercial, who originated the idea, thought. Full piece linked above. Warning: I was 25 and had just read a lot of Tom Wolfe. 🧪

There's some fear among supporters that the pauses seen to date will vanish after the elections. But there are also more than a dozen candidates across the U.S. who've said they'll support bans on data-center tax breaks

Another option is to buy more time — like HB 1189 in North Carolina. It "would impose a two-year statewide moratorium on permits for data centers of 100 MW or more, while the state studies grid, ratepayer, tax and environmental impacts," said Arnab Pal, @deployaction.bsky.social

In any case the so-called moratoriums we hear going live now in NY, PA, and TX aren't all moratoriums. Only NY has one to date. "A statewide data center moratorium usually sounds broader than it actually is," said Pal.

Data center rules are cropping up around the U.S. and some mandate research into environmental and humanitarian impact. But governors aren't really locking in big changes or key research. Here's what they're doing 🧪

"While moratoriums may direct regulators & government departments to conduct studies of data centers' energy, water, & community impacts, it's unclear how these studies will translate to new regulations & how they will impact how data centers are developed" -Rachel Mural, Harvard Kennedy School

That's why advocates are pushing for legislation like New York's Senate Bill 10642, which would mandate deeper inquiry into data centers' environmental and humanitarian impact. Food & Water Watch backs that bill.

NEW: Flock has said for years that its cameras "cannot track individuals." We found the code for its new AI tool. It's preloaded w/ prompts like "Find me witness" & "find relatives." One tracks visitors of multiple hotels, another if you visit banks after midnight. www.wired.com/story/flock-...

Really interesting story here. You know how the hyperscaler cowboys are powering their data centers with gas turbines? It turns out the demands of AI are not very friendly to those turbines. They're supposed to last 5+ years & instead they're wearing out in under 12 months!
