Had a productive morning getting *extremely* basic audio metering working for MP3 and HLS streams on #iOS. Next steps; roll my own fork of rntp.dev so I can use it in #ReactNative
Any #ReactNative vibe coders willing to give this a spin? github.com/twodoorsdev/...
Got inspired by @jayz.us playing around with React Native macOS and got NavigationSplitView working as an Expo module; next step is to see if I can hook it up to react-navigation
Day 25: Thanks and Shoutouts 🎄 Merry Christmas to everyone reading! 🎄 This concludes the Advent of #ReactNative! Huge thanks to the community for keeping this ecosystem alive. I'd like to take a moment to thank the following folks:
Day 24: Styling in #ReactNative We’re all familiar with the built-in StyleSheet API, but its simplicity leaves large gaps for improvement, and thankfully over the years many such solutions have sprung up. Today I’ll go over some of the more popular ones.
Not really React Native related, but @rogueamoeba.bsky.social this year were incredibly helpful when I had some CoreAudio/AVFoundation-related questions, so a huge thank you to them

@infinite.red: For being amazing community stewards and keeping everyone up-to-date with their conferences, newsletters, podcasts and streams. If you want a finger on the pulse of React Native, give them a follow.
@douglowder.bsky.social and @kraenhansen.dk: For providing corrections to my posts when necessary 😀

@callstack.com: For making incredibly detailed React Native eBooks, and for making them absolutely free of charge to download. Go get your copy of www.callstack.com/ebook/the-ul... now!
@margelo.com: From react-native-mmkv to Nitro Modules, these peeps are always pushing the boundaries of possibility with React Native. Thanks for maintaining those projects, looking forward to seeing what you get up to in 2025!

@wcandillon.bsky.social: For being the Bob Ross of React Native and animations; I've mentioned it before, his YouTube channel is a goldmine.
matt-oakes (github.com/matt-oakes): For making github.com/matt-oakes/r..., its saved me so much time debugging Redux on React Native

@shirakaba.bsky.social: A trailblazer in all things React Native Desktop; thanks for all the code and knowledge you've shared this past year, its been immensely helpful.

lovegaoshi (github.com/lovegaoshi): Kept react-native-track-player alive and pushed hard to get fixes for Android into React Native 0.76.2
@tsapeta.dev, @kudochien.bsky.social: For reviewing and merging all the macOS PRs I sent to @expo.dev

@bacon.bsky.social: Expo Router aside, all the config plugins you've written are incredibly helpful

@danabra.mov: Your React and Redux courses on @egghead.io taught me so much, I wouldn’t be where I am without them.
@hailey.at, @samuel.bsky.team: Your work on @bsky.app has been awesome to watch in real-time, thanks for keeping the sauce open for React Native nerds like me.

Day 23: #ReactNative E2E Testing After coming back to React Native apps this year, I was curious as to what the gold standard is for E2E testing. It didn’t take long to see that everyone was using Detox, and by jove, it really does feel like Playwright for React Native apps: wix.github.io/Detox/
With all these style libraries, its useful to see some sort of benchmark, and luckily for me, there is one: github.com/efstathiosnt... The newest results show dramatic improvements across the board, with most of the frameworks mentioned above performing *better* than the built-in StyleSheet API.

Tamagui: Tamagui looks really cool, I just haven’t had a chance to play with it outside of a few toy examples. The documentation is top-notch, and it works with React Native Web too. Definitely one to keep an eye on in 2025 too. tamagui.dev

NativeWind: Without turning this into a Tailwind vs not-Tailwind holy war, I’ll just say if you like Tailwind and you want it in React Native, NativeWind is the answer. There isn't 100% compatibility between web and native, but its close enough and the gap is always closing. www.nativewind.dev

StyleX: This project seems to have originated within Instagram and only seems to have been open-sourced last year. Looking through the docs, it does indeed seem very interesting, taking more of a code-based (rather than config-based) approach to theming. stylexjs.com
Unistyles: If you want the built-in StyleSheet API on steroids, Unistyles is the best bet. It adds theme support, along with a number of other quality-of-life improvements (like variants, including compounds). Frankly, I’ve got nothing but good things to say about it. www.unistyl.es

Styled Components: One of the earliest solutions for styling from @mxstbr.com, I saw it first demoed at ReactNL 2016. The dream of one styling syntax for web and native was tantalizing; however the performance overhead from runtime CSS-in-JS for web left much to be desired. styled-components.com
Restyle: A relatively new contender from Shopify, this project provides a very simple set of wrappers around a theme object constructed from your design tokens. It seems extremely lightweight, and would work very well with teams that have a solid design system in place. shopify.github.io/restyle/
