Are algorithm audits meaningfully fixing issues in algorithmic systems? In our paper at #AIES2026 this week, @davidthewid.bsky.social and I argue that it’s time to deprioritize algorithm audits & instead shift scrutiny to the larger systems of power in which audits sit. 1/n

Whether we’re enjoying downtime after a long day, forging new connections with other people or practicing a new skill, we gravitate toward the joys of entertainment. And SCS has a long history of impacting the art of amusement.
HCII Assistant Professor Sarah Fox (@perhaxis.bsky.social) reminds us that major traffic disruptions also create layers coordination work for drivers, bus riders, transit operators, employers & families trying to keep daily life moving. Let's try to give extra grace to all. #Transit#Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh is bracing for the Parkway East shutdown — but CMU researchers say you can stress less with a little planning and a mindful mentality.
Just because #traffic grinds to a halt, doesn't mean your day has to. 🚦

AI chatbots are increasingly designed to feel personal, engaging, and relational, but that can also create new opportunities for manipulation. CDT research examines how familiar dark patterns shape user choices and behavior in subtle ways.
I’m excited to share that
• Last week, I successfully defended my dissertation, &
• In Jan 2027, I will start as a tenure-track assistant professor of Digital Media at Georgia Institute of Technology 🤠
When does the design of conversational AI systems push users into acting in ways that are misaligned with their interests?

Excited Carnegie Mellon students had the opportunity to meet with Jensen Huang, NVIDIA Founder and CEO.
Jensen engaged firsthand with the cutting-edge research being conducted by CMU students. There was a snake robot, a robotic arm — even a robobuggy.
In this article, Assistant Professor @perhaxis.bsky.social cautions that the rise of AI-generated workslop may reflect deeper shifts in workplace power dynamics, where AI is used to standardize & control work rather than meaningfully support employees.

Behavioral researchers are facing a growing data integrity challenge: participants are using AI chatbots to automate their responses in online studies.
Across 3 studies, this new tool identified cheating for about 10% of participants that would have been missed by the standard screening checks. If you run crowdsourced studies, check out their free tool and instructions. Links below.
Behavioral researchers are facing a growing data integrity challenge: participants are using AI chatbots to automate their responses in online studies.
Researchers use a variety of checks – impossibly quick response sessions, duplicate IP addresses at the same time, 1 word responses to an open-ended question, and more – to measure the quality of human participants’ surveys from online crowdsourcing platforms. AI cheaters still slipped through.
But the OAK Lab just built a new tool to catch them. #cmuhcii authors created a JavaScript keytracker that catches participants copying answers from an AI tool like ChatGPT and pasting them into their Qualtrics survey.
How did they write 7 lines of commented code with only 2 keystrokes? Red flag.
