Just published the results of the organic analyses on material extracted from the horns of the #Bronzeage Viksø #helmets. New #radiocarbon date, first use of #birchtar for construction, complete list of Bronze Age #tar finds, all open access.

From Athens to Poznań an easy task. But the transition from the EAA annual meeting to the World Congress of the International Union of Prehistoric and Protohistoric Sciences (UISPP) is a major change. Fortunately, my colleagues at both conferences enjoy discussing metals in prehistory. 🏺

#FindsFriday a late #Bronzeage #sword from Kostryzyn with a very interesting crown-like ribbon around the hilt. I know this crown shaped pattern from early #ironage neckrings in Denmagk, but this sword is much earlier.

Oh yes, this is with no doubt a masterpiece! When you are interested where it was made and if there are others from the same workshop here is an educated guess... #bronzeage www.archaeopress.com/Archaeopress...

A Bronze Age ‘belt plate’ which was discovered in 1879 when cutting peat at Langstrup, near Asminderød in North Zealand. Now part of the collections at The National Museum of Denmark. 📸 My own. #FindsFriday #Prehistory #Denmark

I often find myself in situations where I'm really glad I had such a long and varied #education. Some of the habits from my apprenticeship as #goldsmith still are part of my movements. I don't think about holding my little finger as a stabiliser for the drill; I just do it. #archaeology #bronzeage

It was exciting to present the #research behind the picture that I entered into the competition! The real fascination of metallography 🧪 only becomes apparent when you see the original artefact. #archaeology 🏺 #bronzeage

A big thank you to @roepstorff.bsky.social and @lholm.bsky.social for hosting the DNRF photo exhibition at @aiasdk.bsky.social. And thanks to the present researchers for sharing such inspiring insights into their images💡 📸 Stay tuned for more information about this year’s DNRF Photo Competition👀

I had the most incredible #time-travelling experience working in the storage facilities at the National Museum in #Stettin. I always imagined #archaeologists 🏺 would spend a lot of time in mysterious, dusty rooms – at least, that's what Indiana Jones taught us, right? Here, it is true! #Bronzeage

That sounds like a good holiday book! Thanks for sharing.

Super exciting!

The next episode of #DiggingForBritain is tonight and features Antiquity authors Benjamin W. Roberts & R. Alan Williams on their excavations of the Bronze Age tin trade at St. Michael's Mount! Can't wait? They wrote on their findings in an #AntiquityBlog 🏺 www.cambridge.org/core/blog/20...

Would you like to know why I take #pictures of #ancient #metal objects and what makes the bronze medal picture from the 2025 DNRF🧪 #photocompetition so special? Mark 20 February in your calendar. Here, I will give a short talk in Aarhus on the #craft secrets revealed by my picture. #bronzeage

Interview with my dear colleague Daniel Berger about our latest #article on metal #provenance studies of Sardinian #Bronzeage figurines. 🧪🏺

Archaeology Magazine@archaeologymag.bsky.social

New archaeological analysis of the bronzetti figurines of Sardinia has changed the picture of copper in the Bronze Age: The Nuragic people who lived on the island may have traded the metal as far as Scandinavia. archaeology.org/issues/january-february-2026/artifacts/sardinian-bronze-figurines/

My colleagues, Anna Tornberg and Kristian Brink, invited me to #Lund to see a #Bronzeage belt plate. They didn't just ask me to come and look at it. My specialty is not looking at #things, but imagining how they were #crafted while spending hours examining them. And this we did! 🧪🏺 #archaeology

In #Copenhagen. This time, I focused on the #lures and #shields! Before the #Viksø #helmets can #gopublic, there is one issue that needs to be resolved. I have been working on describing the #crafting of the helmets when I noticed something new that I had not paid attention to before. #bronzeage

With a group of female researchers, all alumni of the Academy of Science Communication #RoyalDanishAcademyofSciences, I visited the Danish no.1 Radio programme #P1. We were invited to say hi and pitch our research to get more female experts in radio! #expert in #archaeoligy #bronzeage #metals #craft

It is very good for research when pictures taken during investigations for scientific reasons are seen as special. 🧪 While trying to understand how 3,500-year-old jewellery was made, a beautiful picture came to life. #archaeology #bronzeage #art #moesgaard

👀What may appear to be an abstract painting is actually a microscopic view of a bronze surface, which provides valuable insights into the craftsmanship, technology, and society of the Bronze Age. @heidewnoergaard.bsky.social won third place in the DNRF Photo Competition.📸👇 dg.dk/en/heide-wro...

When the assumed 20 cm of colluvium (?) turned out to be 75 cm! To understand the #environmental changes at the #sacredwell in Matzanni, #Sardinia, we dug test pits 🏺– this one was deep! #archaeology #Bronzeage #ironage #moesgaard #augustinusfoundation

On #FindsFriday I present a question! This #metallography of a late iron age #slag has an inclusion I cannot identify! The slag contains fayalite and wustite indicating iron #smelting, but what is this layering around the cavity? #archaeology #metallurgy #geoscience #Ironage #science 🧪🏺

Modern challenges in copying #ancient #craft techniques. At #FindsFriday the bead made by Murano glas is an attempt to copy the technique, quality and design of the 2000 year old #Millefiori glas fragments from #roman Murina bowls. #tübingenmuseum #archaeology #ironage #romans

I just gave my lecture on #craft traces and #workshop organisation in #Bronzeage at the 6th NAHM workshop. It's amazing to present this to such a qualified audience. Seeing a #goldsmith nod when you present the #technological traces on the #bronze work is a very good feeling. #archaeology 🏺

Tracespotting! What do traces of prehistoric #metalworking look like, where can we find them, and what can they tell us about ancient #craftsmanship? 🏺 This is the topic of the 6th workshop of the Network for Archaeological and Historical Metalworking held in Tübingen this year.

Totally focused on a weekend? Yes, it's playtime in the #smithy, and I need to produce some #videos showing the different types of #blacksmithing residue from an archaeological perspective. There are hardly any. #archaeology #ironage #metallurgy #hammerscale

#StandingStoneSunday a tour through the Nature National Park #MolsBjerge, Jutland, Denmark. The Porskær #Megalith has a roofstone that was splittet in the middle and is one of the largest constructions in DK with in all 35 stones. 🏺 #stoneage #archaeology #bronzeage

Bronze figurines from Sardinia carry the isotopic fingerprints of Mediterranean trade 3,000 years ago—linking horned-helmeted warriors to networks stretching to Iberia and perhaps Scandinavia. #Archaeology #BronzeAge #Nuragic #Anthropology

Absolutely great results to the extend of mobility in #Bronzeage.

Isotope clues from Seddin’s monumental burial mounds show Late Bronze Age elites were long-distance travelers linking Scandinavia, Central Europe & Italy. #BronzeAge #Archaeology #HumanMobility #Anthropology

Extreme nerding! The #ARCMET #EAA community on #archaeometallurgy 🧪 is trying something new this time at the #EAA2025. We met to join our session #146 multi-disciplinarian metalwork as a group. Our #AarhusUni Hub hopefully shows that online conferences can be social too. 🏺#Bronzeage

Great new book on #Bronzeage water deposits....I am looking forward to get my hands on it.

Late #FindsFriday. Last week, I showed you an experimental #bronze disc, made using bronze #tools on a bronze plate. This week, I show you the other part of the experiment: a #cast bronze disc with a decoration that was inserted into the model and cast as such. #archaeology 🧪🏺

Warum so überrascht? Deine Zeichnungen sind klasse und verdienen es gross rauszukommen. Weiter so @jensnotroff.com

For #FindsFriday a real treasure. This close-up shows a typical #BronzeAge #spiral design punched with bronze #tools in bronze. It was an experiment carried out in the 1870's by famous #Danish archaeologists. This treasure trove of #knowledge was buried in a storage room until I discovered it! 🧪
