Things are happening in browser land! Chromium 156 shipped support for CSS random() so you can try all the demos below without needing experimental features turned on. Firefox 148 has it behind a feature flag you can enable, and the demos look fantastic there too. polypane.app/blog/experim...

Weird times to be scrolling the /r/macgaming subreddit and it's mostly just a bunch of ports (or whatever we're calling it now) for non macOS games like Zelda BOTW / TOTK that you have to get from some shady looking repo.

Actually you know what, I'm going to right away erase point #2 for this newsletter-like thing. Why shoot myself in the foot? The page design I mocked up last night (envelope and papers), it's ripe for a lil pamphlet/ad space isn't it? just like you might find in real snail mail! 🐌

🚫 I will not: - Knowingly feature AI - Serve ads (I might promote stuff yeh, but I'm not getting paid for it) - Solely use this as personal funnel (though I might share to my own work on occasion, if I think it's _really_ cool)

Heavily vetted (Because point #1 still stands, until I die), leaning towards indie creators making real things, and cheap. It'd be super clear it's an ad, and I think it's fair to leave room for this. This might never happen, I just want to leave the possibility for it down the line :)

This is how I'm envisioning doing the lil online newsletter thing I posted about earlier ☺️

I'm toying with the idea of putting together a lil RSS feed/newsletter/zine like this, If only as an excuse for me to research cool things about the world and pull myself out of feeling low. Being online used to bring me joy and wonder, I think it's still there, I just need to dig for it.

Pals, I've been a bit doomy gloomy, innit? Sorry for that, here's some cool stuff instead. Hope everyone has an amazing weekend πŸ’œ This lil thread contains a bird, some ruins, cinnamon rolls, a laptop, and board games you can print at home.

βœ… I will: - Likely share stuff related to a what I've experienced recently - Strive to share accurate information (I am not an expert in what I'm sharing, so I might make mistakes) - Correct any mistakes I find, or am kindly informed of - Link to further reading/context

A bit of tech, a bit of geography, a bit of whatever I might find fascinating at any given moment; perhaps you will find something neat in what I share too. Just a few, small, interesting (to me) things, that'll focus on the human-made, and the wondrous world we stand on together.

🎲 Did you know you can print a board game at home? One or two sheets of paper, using nothing more than a deck of cards, or a pen, or a few dice. There a many out there, but you can't go wrong starting with the games from Postmark Games. www.postmarkgames.com Pictured: Voyages and 52 Realms

πŸͺΏ The latest bird pic I took was of a Common Starling. Native to Eurasia but introduced the world over. They can form big roosts of up to 1.5 million birds. Large flocks can create interesting flying displays too, called murmurations. ebird.org/species/eursta

Some of the elders in my life keep watching AI content on social media, adamant that what they're seeing is real. I just had to download a clip and take some frame by frame screenshots to highlight the inconsistencies in the Instagram of a 'hot guy making bread'.

The entire account is full of it, just a bunch of traditional Portuguese recipe videos. Counting the number of fingers on a hand doesn't help now, It's getting harder and harder to tell. Why are we doing this? what can we (as a society) do about this? I'm tired 🫩

Why did no one warn me about the _dreadful_ music snippets in The Traitors? 😭 Other than we're really like the show, first time watching it!

My keyboard (Logitech MX Keys Mini) suddenly sounds different while typing on it, a bit... tinny? I hope it's not a sign that it's going to start breaking on me 😟

That tip of listening to a song fully to remove an earworm doesn't work for me. Now the song is stuck and looping in my head even harder 😭

It's time I look into alternatives to iCloud, and I think we'll start with some local storage solutions first. Photos are the main thing, and software like immich immich.app looks nice for that. I'd love some tips for the hardware-side of things though if anyone has any :)

Does anyone recall a local/in-browser way to run code demos that could be edited by folks and they'd see the updated result? I believe it was handled through a web component? It wasn't one of the main providers (JSFiddle, CodePen, CodeSandbox), but something we could just add to our own pages πŸ€”

It's an odd feeling on my legs to be wearing trousers again after many months without, due to the constant heat. Had to put on a hoodie again too! This is my jam tho, I can feel my energy levels increasing ☺️

Uh, that pang of disappointment and confliction, when a tool/service I've been enjoying suddenly adds an AI button, and now I have to decide if I want to renew it next year or not 🫩

I'm going to have to go touch grass _again_ πŸ˜… can't log into this shit for one damn evening, jΓ€vlar fan foda-se merda helvete caralhoooooo

Grass successfully touched! πŸ₯³ ... actually any lush green grass hasn't grown in yet, still very dry - but at least today it had cooled enough to enjoy a good hike! It's so nice to get away from the tech discourse for a bit.

Christian Alder@hejchristian.com

Off on a lil hike tomorrow to touch some grass. Very much needed 🫩

I thought I'd look around Steam Next Fest a bit. Holy shit that was a mistake... I can't find the legit gems amongst all that slopware 🫩 I'll look for a nice curated list some time, until then no new games for me. AOE2 recently ported to macOS so that'll be plenty fun for now.

This post is unavailable.

This isn't a game I'm interested in, but an example of the deluge. I know copycat/shovelware games have always been a thing, but at this speed? I've read a few accounts of indie devs afraid to even publish a page/demo now, as folks are just spinning up poor quality copies & beating them to launch 🫩

The novelty of running a self hosted podcast server (Audiobookshelf) has worn off 🀷 It works, but I'm not really finding any benefit to using it? the Raspberry Pi that's hosting it is just gradually filling up with episodes, and there isn't a built in way to purge them other than "keep x episodes"

"Max # of episodes to keep" is a bit pants, because then it'll just delete one and I wouldn't know unless I went per-podcast show to check. I tried to make a script to handle it based on episodes marked as finished, it kinda worked, but then it just auto downloaded them again πŸ˜©πŸ˜…

That was annoying, and I'm sure with some more work I could fix it up... but again, what's the benefit for me to self-host? I'm not interested in archival of what I'm listening to either, so that rules out the one benefit I could see by running such a setup.
