Why does daptomycin resistance appear so fast in Enterococcus? We finally have a clue. DAP resistance in enterococci pops up quickly. What’s been missing is why resistance-associated membrane changes look the way they do, and why the classic path of mutations is so predictable.

Your data is lying to you. Here’s how technical artifacts distort biology—and how to see the truth. 👇 1/ Beautiful t-SNE? Shiny heatmap? Look closer. Technical artifacts can fake whole cell types. Here’s where the ghosts hide.

4 years ago I was honored to host the legendary Elio Schaechter in the microbiology journal club, when he was only 93 yo... Elio told us about very peculiar microbes that travel 1 mm/sec, reside inside mitochondria, ride a microbial bus...He named my kids who also joined "micro microbiologists" RIP

I know you will all play a tiny violin but I genuinely very rarely get invited to speak at big conferences. So the invite this morning to present at ESCMID next year is a career highlight! Can’t wait!!!!

Camino Day 31. Ribadiso to O Pedrouso. 20km. People are equal parts happy and sad as the end of the camino arrives. Only tomorrow separates us from the end of 800km. Our camino friend Max rejoins for the last day - what a sense of connection! Tomorrow everyone is shopping for new clothes!

Camino Day 30. Portomarin to Palas de Rei: 26km. The end is in sight; 75km left! Crowds out in full force. I wonder if they know other parts of the Camino are just as wonderful! Amazing scenery: reminds me of Ireland & weather is giving similar vibes: wet! Have been lucky to avoid the rain until now

Camino Day 29. Sarria to Portomarin: beautiful scenery! The crowds have joined us! Big shout out to my Camino family for supporting me through my injury; it slows everyone but all have been super. In the last 4 weeks I have spent more time with these people than family & friends in the last year.

Camino day 28/29. Man down - I needed another taxi today from Triacastela to Sarria. after seeing a physio I hope to walk tomorrow but it will be slow going. Bumped into a whole tranche of students from my brothers old school - good idea to give them an unforgettable trip on the Camino!

Day 24. Walked from Foncebadon to Ponferrada - 25km. Molinaseca just beautiful. Ponferrada castle picture postcard! Lovely dinner with my good friend Prof Adam Cunningham who joins for the next few days.

One of ours! Great person and scientist!

At the GRC meeting on multidrug efflux - the discussion leader, Megan O’Mara, has just highlighted the key role of physics based modelling in linking structural biology and artificial intelligence - it’s the bridge that will enable information flow that will lead to new therapeutics.
