This is a proof of concept, with simple simulations. One pop, one collapse history Incorporating complex dynamics and life-history traits should be the next step towards integrating genomics into #biodiversity #forecasting.

🧬 Can we predict whether a population will go extinct or recover from its genome? In our new paper, led by Johanna Winder, we combine forward simulations and machine learning to ask how genomics could inform extinction and recovery potential doi.org/10.1111/eva.... #consgen #PopGen #evolution

doi.orgMachine‐Learning Models Trained on Genomic Summary Statistics Assess Extinction Risk and Recovery Potential of Bottlenecked PopulationsForecasting extinction risk from genomic data is challenging because of interactions among environment, demography, and genomic erosion. Here, we use known outcomes from forward simulations as a proo...

We simulated 11,200 populations facing severe bottlenecks, then asked whether genomic indicators could predict their extinction or recovery. We compared genetic diversity, deleterious variation and inbreeding metrics.

We evaluated 3 time pts 100 and 10 years before the bottleneck and at bottleneck onset At onset, supervised models using genomics alone achieved ~86–87% predictive power. Among the strongest genomic predictors were ROH-based inbreeding measures, especially the upper end of their distributions.

Island species 🏝️ frequently experience founder events and population bottlenecks 🧬 and are often subject to disturbances that further reduce population sizes. Despite these challenges, some island lineages persist for millennia 🕰️ —the paradox of persistence. Here’s what we learned about it:

Just in time for #SMBE2026, our new preprint is out: using 130 genomes spanning ~200 years, fitness data and simulations, we show that conservation rescued the Mauritius kestrel from extinction, but not from genomic erosion. 🧵 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6... #popgen #consgen #conservation

View full thread

We built realistic forward simulations, validated against temporal genomic data. They show conservation was essential to avoid extinction, and that continued management may remain needed because population numbers can recover while drift debt unfolds.

View full thread

Compared with other kestrels, the Mauritius kestrel carries the signature of a long-term small island population: exceptionally low diversity. But it also stands out for extreme inbreeding, reflecting the recent crash rather than island history alone.

Long-term small Ne is expected to expose deleterious alleles and reduce severe inbreeding depression. Yet genome-wide erosion still predicted lifetime reproductive success, pointing to ongoing fitness costs after rescue.

The species crashed to only 4 known wild birds in 1974. Across historical and modern genomes, recovery from this bottleneck left clear genomic impact: lost diversity, rising homozygosity and continuing genomic erosion after demographic recovery.
