Prairie Postgres just turned two! We say "community building" often, maybe not always thinking about what it means, but looking back on the past two years, I can confidently say the most important achievement, the one I'm most proud of, is reshaping the Chicago Postgres Community.

Gradually, our gatherings transformed from a group of experienced DBAs plus a dozen newcomers who sat quietly and didn't ask any questions because they didn't know where to start, to a gathering of curious developers, data scientists, and yes, both junior and experienced DBAs are here - how could we keep going without them?

It's hard to say anything new about query optimization., but... there is still something to say!

On the one hand, each new Postgres release includes multiple query planner improvements, and it feels like there is something for any problem that can possibly arise. On the other hand, the fundamental principles of optimization do not change: if your query is highly selective, meaning the result is a small percentage of the original data set, you need to build indexes that would support this particular search.

Many thanks to Ervin Weber, who literally spent three years trying to make it happen. I was happy to give back to one of my favorite places in the world - the city of Tallinn. I was a little bit hesitant when Ervin indicated his preference to listen to my pg_acm talk. I thought that this talk was often viewed as "too specialized", "niche," and not interesting enough to people who are "not very much into Postgres." And I am so glad I ended up giving this talk to this particular group!

I have been complaining for years about the application developers' inertia and their overreliance on ORM tools rather than writing high-performing SQL. Maybe we can teach AI instead?

My absolutely-most-anticipated Friday talk is Paul Jungwirth's Migrating to a Temporal Schema. I hope I do not need to explain why. It has been more than ten years since I first tried to implement an asserted versioning model in Postgres, and I took in all the endless possibilities that opened up when you incorporate time into Postgres.

Andy authored a book, "High Performance PostgreSQL for Rails," which I reviewed when it was still in the making, and which I highly recommend to anyone to whom PostgreSQL + Ruby on Rails rings a bell. As a database architect, being on the receiving end of what mindless ORM usage can produce, I hope that people will use this opportunity to learn the best practices and dos and don'ts. In my current position as Database Architect at DRW, I talk with end users more than I ever did in my life. Our end users are application developers who look at PostgreSQL from a very utilitarian perspective. Trust me, they do not care whether Postgres is the most advanced DBMS or not.
