The concept of tipping points is increasingly shaping how we understand environmental change, from abrupt and potentially irreversible transformations in natural systems to opportunities for positive, self-reinforcing change in society.

But what exactly do we mean by a tipping point? How is the concept defined, debated, and applied across disciplines? And what role does it play in shaping science, policy, and our collective future? Join us for an interdisciplinary workshop on Tipping Points hifmb.de/tipping-poin...

It's time for pub science again: 8 bars, 16 scientists and lots of fascinating insights into research in Oldenburg. Meet HIFMB researchers during their talks at "umBAUbar" and "Die Ule". 📆 Sep 10, 7.30 pm hirnvomhahn.de/programm-2026/

The UN Ocean Decade is far from over – and neither is our Artist-in-Residence programme ArtWaves. For 2027, we are looking for an artist as part of our interdisciplinary and international team of researchers.

Last week, we welcomed new AWI Director Hajo Eicken at HIFMB. As a collaborative institute between the University of Oldenburg and AWI, HIFMB is legally and organizationally part of AWI, and we collaborate closely. It was a great opportunity to exchange ideas with Hajo so soon after he took office.

We discussed future scientific goals and pressing issues in marine biodiversity research; how we can enhance the impact and transdisciplinary nature of our work; ...

...how indigenous perspectives and knowledge can become an even more integral part of our research; and what topics are of interest to early-career researchers. Thank you for taking the time for this fruitful exchange.

The project aims to advance research in the natural sciences by drawing on methods, insights, and knowledge from across the #humanities and #socialsciences.

In doing so it also offers fresh frameworks of thinking for the humanities and social sciences, and works towards an interdisciplinarity that is essential in contemporary marine sciences to tackle complex environmental problems.

Paper alert! Our study about functional motifs is out in PNAS. We use food webs as an example to discuss how small subgraphs drive the dynamics in complex systems. While motifs that determine overall stability are rare, when it comes to reactivity, we show that small groups dominate system behavior.
