oh wait god the death note plot aspect of needing to know how to write someone's name to kill them doesn't translate well outside the sinosphere does it, in most of the world's languages it is easy to spell someone's name if you have heard it spoken

I love it when an image CDN has the parameters in the URL and lets anyone change them. if I'm curious what the text in a thumbnail says, I can just make it bigger. way bigger. I can even adjust the aspect ratio and crop. even if that wasn't what the website authors intended…

gotta be honest I feel trapped by this “loss32” project I've supposedly taken on. I don't know what to do about it. writing a blog post about what I've done so far, releasing what I have so far, opening it up to contributions, all of this keeps being delayed by this feeling

the other elephant in the room is that there's competing projects already, because I made the classic mistake of talking about an idea before releasing anything, and that colours my thinking enormously. I don't enjoy “competing” in an open-source context. maybe it's emudev trauma

it ought to be easy enough to write up what I've done so far, there's a lot of exciting stuff to talk about, a journey I can take people on. if nothing else I get to talk about interesting aspects of WINE but I also need to talk about the future, and that's the troublesome part

the elephant in the room is that we're unemployed, and have been for long enough now that this only feels worth seriously recommitting to if we could somehow make money off it, and it's a project that is very late, has no moat and what must be a very niche appeal at this point

the algo era of Twitter sucks because it turns the site into Reddit. instead of tweets spreading in groups of people who know eachother and can get along, it's all interest-based recommendations. every Monogatari fan sees eachother's posts even if they have nothing else in common

the kind of engagement this produces is very hollow. people seeing my tweets don't know me any more, and I don't know the people whose tweets I see. there's no context. it's very hard to bond with anyone in a meaningful way if there's such a tenuous and fleeting link between us

the PHP security bug patch is a nightmare, our server is patched but this thing looks more like a desperate attempt to patch hundreds of different leaks than a straightforward single bugfix, I do not trust that this is over…

PHP is a million or so lines of C code that pervasively used alloc functions that longjmp() on failure, so OOM bailout creates corrupted state. the fix uses fallible allocs and a global please-return-early OOM flag but requires touching Everything. completeness is impossible 😰😰😰

their usual drummer has a hand infection right now so they found some “sufficiently mad” (I probably misquote) Austrian guy whose name I wish I managed to catch, he did great, he had this really cool long drum solo at one point
