If you're a longtime member or user of Hireillo, you may remember that back when we were Hire an Illustrator we used to have a Map search on the website. Well, now it's back and better than before! (Note that members' locations are approximate and they can opt out if preferred.)

Hireillo members, it's spooky season again! 🎃 We'd love you to share your seasonal work on the Hireillo website as news. We'll be sharing it on socials and in a Halloween newsletter, too. To post news, log in to Hireillo and use the form in your dashboard. 🦉 Art by the wonderful Jim Bradshaw 🦉

Over the last eighteen months I've been working on the Hireillo website alongside writing First Commission, Proper Business. I'm quite proud of how much I've managed to do. There's a rebuilt search, a new member map and galleries that behave better on your phone. Have a nose around: hireillo.com/T95

Why your cousin can post a photo of a potato and get twenty likes from fifty connections, while you get three likes from thousands of followers on a piece that took hundreds of hours to create. Ah, the joys of navigating the algorithm. Social Media for Illustrators (The Truth) 👉 hireillo.com/SBM

Social media is one part of your route to getting work, not the whole road. Repeat clients, referrals, direct emails, a clear portfolio and industry relationships all matter. The useful question isn't 'Which single platform is best?' It's 'Which mix brings suitable people to my work?'

Here are some of the previous batch of our members' Artist Trading Cards that I realised I hadn't shared yet! Everyone's art looking amazing as always ❤️ Artists: Simon Sturge, Sean Counley, Liz Kay Tariq Singleton, Sue Todd, Danielle Rose Fisher Alexandra Bobolina, Nathan Shelton, Micah Champion

Until further notice, we are suspending sales of our physical products to the EU due to the new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) rules. Sorry!

A useful illustration quote depends on more than the time required to make the work. Before pricing, I want to know what is being made, how it will be used, where, for how long, whether the rights are exclusive, when it is due and how many revisions are expected.

🚨 Scam Warning 🚨 A new version of the old "workshop project" scam is doing the rounds. It claims to be from an academic event organiser, praises your portfolio, and asks about your availability and payment terms. Do not reply or share any details. Mark it as spam.

The State of Illustration 7th Edition draws on responses from more than 1,000 creative professionals. It covers work, income, contracts, social media and the challenges of being an illustrator. The full report is available through the 𝕝𝕚𝕟𝕜 𝕚𝕟 𝕠𝕦𝕣 𝕡𝕣𝕠𝕗𝕚𝕝𝕖.

A useful illustration brief should say what is being made, where it will be used, who it is for, when it is needed, what budget is available and which rights are required. Clear briefs save everyone time.

A useful heads-up for artists selling physical work into the EU. Although this infographic is written for Ireland, it explains the new €3 customs charge on low-value purchases from outside the EU. The charge can apply to each different type of item in a parcel, so review your shipping and pricing.

-Thread- UK comic friends: I’ve been researching EU customs fees following the new IOSS rules that came into play on July 1st. I used Royal Mail’s Click & Drop service to price up a 24 page floppy comic (94 grams) to share how much more you should now expect to pay in postage. Brace yourselves…

Although this infographic is aimed at Ireland, it’s one of the clearest explanations we’ve seen of how the new charges work. Worth a look if you sell into the EU and are still trying to get your head around what’s changing.

I've got more of our members' Artist Trading Cards to show you! Here we have Eric Colquhoun, Kimberley Hoffman and Jinjer Markley. If you're a Hireillo member and would like to take part in our ATC promotions, get in touch to find out more.
