So glad to have contributed to this piece.

“No sooner had Northern armies touched Southern soil than this old question, newly guised, sprang from the earth, — What shall be done with slaves?” - W. E. B. Du Bois, “Of the Dawn of Freedom,” The Souls of Black Folk (1903) Happy Juneteenth!

“When Northern armies entered the South they became armies of emancipation. It was the last thing they planned to be.” – W. E. B. Du Bois, Black Reconstruction (1935). Happy Juneteenth!

Looking forward to this event! I'm reflecting on the 2011 "Imperiled Promise" NPS report and considering how to move forward in this present moment. It is going to be great conversation!

Excited for OAH in Philly! My paper focuses on Isaiah King (shown)) and John N. Conna, two Civil War veterans who are chasing Reconstruction’s promise in Alaska. This WIP panel session forced me to put words on a page and fully consider a possible home for the larger project. #amwriting

Happy 10th book pub anniversary of Educational Reconstruction! I am happy with its impact in the fields of Reconstruction Studies, Urban History, History of Education, African American history and Public History. I'm very grateful to now see it on a shelf alongside my other publications.

Final book pub anniversary post: I wrote this book for my diverse communities--academic historian, daughter, niece, cousin and community member of where I have worked after getting my Ph.D. One early reader told me that we need a history of African American porches and porch sitting. 1/3

I wrote this book for a Black reading public. I wrote for Black genealogists, readers of Oprah Book selections, members of ASALH, ABWH, AAIHS, BrANCH, JCWE, AHA, and SHA, and those who remain intellectually curious about the past for understanding the present. I wrote for family and community. 2/3

I did not write this book in response to this current administration. Yet, I find myself drawing on the people and examples in the book to explain how to cope with and resist the present moment. Keep reading. Keep engaging. I'm ready for what the next year brings for Unforgettable Sacrifice! 3/3

Book pub anniversary, post 3: We need more books on Black CW Memory and not less. I discussed communities that I knew intimately & left plenty of breadcrumbs for future scholarship. One point that scholars have picked up on is the tendency to reduce Black Civil War Memory to counter-memory. 1/2

This centers whiteness and minimizes the porch archives, traditions, and politics of Black communities I'm grateful that reviewers and scholars who have thoughtfully taken up this point, embraced porch archives as a lens, and even situated the part I w/in trauma studies. 2/2.

Book-pub anniversary, post 1: I learned that is okay to start a project in opposition but not enough to sustain a decade long project. I wanted communities' porch archives to be understood w/in the field of Civil War Memory. Thankful for the communities' trust in me to write this book.

This was such a fun conversation! Hope that you give it a listen!

African American veterans and their families and communities were essential to sustaining Black Civil War memory over the late 19th century and twentieth century. I discuss my own ancestor and others in Unforgettable Sacrifice. I proudly remembered them yesterday.

With a book talk later this evening, I am catching up on some campus history work and grading. #2025SHA was a very affirming break with other historians. Back to reality. #amwriting #campushistory

London is calling! I am excited to be in community with US & UK scholars at Cardiff for BrANCH 2026. I'm excited to discuss the totality of 19th C US History and present for the first time on my Black Reconstruction in Alaska research. #amwriting

As I prepare for an Alaska research trip, I'm wrapping up some campus history research projects and drafting letters of support for T&P and promotions to full. This daily work might seem mundane; however in this current moment, it is so important. Summer break is drawing to a close. #amwriting

Chapter submitted. It was my first exploring my Davidson campus history research for an edited volume on campus histories. My chapter focused on two men whose campus ties began in slavery and end with their death in the Jim Crow era. Can't wait for the feedback. #amwriting
