I’m perhaps more sanguine than others about closing capability gaps in the coming years. Without more independent initiative from select European NATO countries, however, closing those gaps won’t automatically translate into greater European defense autonomy.

What often gets lost in the public discourse on interceptor shortages is that, doctrinally, ground-based air defenses were only ever one component of a broader air defense approach, meant to absorb the initial set of barrages while air and naval power destroyed the launchers etc.
