The most bouba Welsh place name is Cwmbran and even that has more sharp edges than most. Meanwhile the most kiki Irish place name is Baile Átha Cliath or Cill Mhaintáin and they're still reassuringly smooth for the most part.

Once a year my D&D group meet in person to play rather than online and in 2023 the gf of one of my players made this boat for that game.

I looked at mine and I'm not sure if I like "Consistently repurchases specific consumable items" or "Prefer high specification cables" more. Jack, just say I'm autistic, this is taking forever.

I felt an overwhelming urge to draw yesterday, the strongest I've felt in a while, and it wasn't until I had finished my piece that I realised it was #inktober (subliminal knowledge?). So here's my day 1.

Day 2 of #inktober. I see a *lot* of tarot cards cos my gf is very into them, and I like the aesthetic of the original Rider Waite deck. Especially the hierophant who definitely *isn't* a Catholic cardinal, nope, no way.

I disagree with the tweet, this is an entirely appropriate way to eat an Irish person. You just Lady & Tramp us into your gob like we're spaghetti.

Teaching Swift today, and will always share this on “Modest Proposal” day.

The solipsism of these people fascinates me. That they can't even conceive of a shared experience when there's the potential to profit from it (as record labels have for over a century) is beyond me.

To be clear, I'm a United fan, but that means that if there's one thing I have plenty of experience in seeing, it's shitty owners treating fans like dirt.

She is from Texas, I can tell by the way He is two steppin' around the room And judgin' by the smile that's... on his face I went with you but I only miss these things when they leave I am idiot, drug hive, the virgin, the tattered & the torn Life is for the cold made warm & they are just lizards

Twice my primary school gave over an assembly to my year so we could perform my plays. The plays were not commissioned by anyone, I just decided we were doing plays, wrote them, got all the kids in my year to rehearse at play time. I suspect the school felt they *had* to let us perform or we'd riot.

One was about the history of our town and the teachers told us to reduce the size of the battle scene down from full war to single combat. The other was about the teachers kidnapping our headteacher and was created as a goodbye present for the head who was leaving. WHY WAS I ALLOWED TO DO THIS???

I truly believe that part of the reason Warrington isn't a city and is also not very well known outside the NW of England is that it's a rugby league town and doesn't have a league football team (both Warrington clubs are in the 7th tier).

Stephen Bush@stephenkb.bsky.social

Reading this story and playing back in my head all the times I've referred to Warrington as 'a city' in Warrington. 😳

There's a reply under the quoted post where someone is essentially saying 'Why make Warrington a city when Reading isn't one?' and a) yeah, it's weird Reading isn't a city, but b) Warrington is bigger than Reading. Warrington is so much bigger than people realise.

I grew up in a very similar sort of area (rural Cheshire) and at first I assumed it was a village of similar size to my home village (~6,000) so when I saw there are ~350 ppl in this place... that's barely a place. Why is this national news? Why is a minister commenting?

This post is unavailable.

If you know Cheshire then my attempts to conceived of its size went Holmes Chapel (too big) > Goostrey (too big) > Peover Superior (too big) > Peover Inferior (sort of the right size). Why do we care?

Came very close to wading in to correct someone who was Wrong On The Internet this morning, but I restrained myself cos 'How much coverage the NME gave LCD Soundsystem in 2007' may be a specialist subject of mine but it's ultimately not worth the beef. Probably.

I really want to know how many of the people who said the Norman conquest was 'negative' have a Norman surname. Maybe history ain't so simple as "If you like being alive, you support the Harrying of the North"?

Stephen Bush@stephenkb.bsky.social

What I love about the people answering “negative” is they are basically saying “the last thousand years? I don’t care for them”.

If Chelsea Vs Millwall was a news story...

Daniel Thomas / Danny Tommo has today marched his private army of blackshorts to Daily Mail HQ to demand a new house for his mum within 48 hrs, after they doorstepped her for a feature on him. Apparently he plans to blockade them + cry at them until they do Bet those lads are glad of the balaclavas

HEY! I'm walking* here! *actually speaking an English idiolect which is mostly northwestern England English with a mess of Dublin English sprinkled on top, plus the weird precision of pronunciation that comes with autism sometimes.

Alasdair Beckett-King@misterabk.bsky.social

Delighted to discover that I am from Boston, MA. It's surprising how many of the questions you can answer with an English accent. Apart from Florida or crayon, most of my pronunciations were in there. mydialect.us/quiz-standar...

Reminds me of the time I went to a talk a PhD candidate was giving about his research into the psychology of people who like conspiracy theories, and the entire Q&A was taken up by self proclaimed conspiracy theorists asking weird questions which proved his points.

Ronson is describing how debilitating online radicalisation is, both personally calamitous and harmful to society in general. And here’s this guy, demanding to know why Ronson doesn’t also have a brain slug on his head.

I remember it clearly cos those few seconds between hearing that Diana had died and hearing that it's was a car crash were spent thinking "I hope it wasn't the IRA, they're going to kill us all if it was", in case you want an insight into growing up as both anxious and Irish in the UK in the 90s.

Anne Hathaway has been giving the lesbians what we want in a Cate Blanchett kind of way for years, and I think she deserves more recognition for that.

lastpositivist.bsky.social@lastpositivist.bsky.social

There are men out there (and women too, reputedly) who find Anne Hathaway sexually or erotically attractive.

In the late 2000s I did standup and one of my routines was about how I went to a Catholic school where loads of kids had Polish family and to me Poles were totally normal, thus the then-current media panic could be summed up as "Protestants notice Poles, Panic Ensues".

I know it's v unlikely to happen, but it would be the best thing to happen in club football this century for me if Man Utd's claim that they want to focus the women's team on giving youth a chance actually results in an exciting team of dashing youngsters doing well.

awright starting now let's all post more about things that aren't politics or news. I'll kick off: they took up like half my living room floor because of the Water Mystery and we're walking around on subfloor. however they have indicated that maybe tomorrow we get to take the fans out

Look, we all know our shitty owners just don't want to spend money and are neglectful, but if Eva Olid can pull it off and get Drury, Simpson, Watson, et al doing well, that'll be wonderful.

Newton made a fortune running the Royal Mint and used it to fund the Royal Society, he WAS the funding body. Imagine thinking student politics would be hard to someone who got elected literal MP for the university by the students. What is this?

This post is unavailable.

OP sums it up perfectly, but as an aside, Newton's career was one of wanting to be left alone to think and he sucked at lecturing. Obviously he wouldn't be a university lecturer today, he'd have bolted for CERN at the first opportunity.

And he's not running to CERN because of pronouns, as a gnostic and either gay or ace at a time when most were very risky things to be, I suspect the modern version might be a lot more interested in 'woke' stuff than that article implies.

Well if we can't have the smoothest moon: Our Moon (classic, iconic, gently caressed by our finest moment) Triton (contrary, unusual, smashed up all of Neptune's other moons like a boss) Charon (half the size of its planet, fucks up Pluto's gravity as a result, has a ginger wig)

edeath@edithcharles.bsky.social

I think it's important for a grown adult to have a top 3 favourite moons in the system. And don't include Europa, sorry but that's just crass and derivative.

Help settle an argument about why they carve crosses in the bottom of Brussels Sprouts. My mum says it’s so they cook more evenly, I say it’s because they’re undead and it’s the only way to stop them coming back and eating your brains. My brother claims it’s so they expand on impact for a kill shot
