If spanking isn’t abuse, then why do we tell kids not to hit each other? When a child hits another, we don’t say “well, they needed to learn a lesson.” We stop them. We say, “Use your words.” “That’s not kind.” “We don’t hit.” So why is it different when the adult is the one doing the hitting?

For many of us raised in authoritarian homes or strict religious communities, spanking was seen as godly. “Spare the rod, spoil the child.” But can I be honest? I was scared. Not shaped. Not safe. Just scared.

You can break the cycle. You can be the adult who loves a child in a way that DOESN'T hurt them more than it hurts you. If you're still untangling your ideas of love, control, and "discipline," you're not alone. Let's talk about it.

Children are expected to control their impulses, use their words, and respond calmly—even when they’re overwhelmed. But adults? Some still defend striking children as “discipline.” Shouldn’t we be holding the grown-ups to a higher standard?

We watched episode 1 of Shiny Happy People season 2 last night and hot damn do we have a lot to say about it. We never went to any Teen Mania Ministries events, but we experienced every one of their tactics because trickle down propaganda works. #shinyhappypeople #joshuaharris #exchristian

Christian counseling isn’t regulated. When churches handle harm “internally,” what they’re doing is protecting the institution. Not you. If you felt more ashamed after counseling than before, I’m sorry. That wasn’t healing. That was manipulation. #ChristianCounseling #ReligiousAbuse #Exvangelical

They called it healing. But what they really meant was: “Be quiet.” “Be small.” “Make it easier for us to stay comfortable.” That’s not healing. That’s harm with a smile on it. Christian counseling is NOT therapy. #ReligiousReckoning #SpiritualRecovery #DeconstructingFaith #ChristianGaslighting

Christian counseling isn’t always care. Sometimes it’s control. Sometimes it’s spiritual gaslighting with a Bible verse taped on top. If that was your experience, Darling, you’re not broken. You were spiritually managed instead of supported. #deconstruction #religioustrauma #counseling #exchristian

Christian Counselors are led by the Lord, not a board of ethics. But sure, tell me more about how my “rebellion” is the reason I’m anxious. Healing doesn’t require repentance, submission or forgiveness. Let’s name it. Let’s ghost it. Let’s heal for real. #deconstruction #exchristiannarionalist

Christian counseling is often just spiritual gaslighting with a Bible verse. If you were spiritually manipulated in the name of healing, you’re not crazy babe, you were in a system designed to protect power, not people. #ExvangelicalAF #SpiritualGaslighting #CallOutChurchHarm #ReclaimHealing

If you were harmed by “counseling” in a church, you’re not alone. No license. No board. No accountability. You didn’t imagine it. And it wasn’t your fault. You went to heal, they told you to pray it away. #ChristianCounselingIsNotTherapy #ReligiousTraumaSurvivor #DeconstructAndHeal

Christian counseling is not therapy. It’s often unlicensed, unregulated, and rooted in spiritual authority, not mental health training. If you were told to pray instead of process, repent instead of recover, hi. Let’s talk about it. #ReligiousTrauma #ChristianCounseling #Exvangelical #MentalHealth

I used to believe rest was laziness. Now I know rest is resistance. The dirt will come back tomorrow anyway. At least I’ll be rested. #deconstruction #exvangelical #religiontrauma #restasresistance
