As Homer Simpson said when he was trying to impress Marge and was looking for things to take her to: “Oh, oh, ‘An Evening with Philip Glass.’ Just an evening?”

I went to hear the Philip Glass Ensemble about 30 years ago, and an old guy in the audience stood up, walked on the stage, and started yelling, “This isn’t music!” until someone escorted him away.

This book was very interesting. It’s a history of popular music from ragtime to the 1970s. One recurring point is that placement of music into categories is more about marketing than the actual music. Another is the creative tension between music as art to listen to versus something to dance to.

He also argues that you can’t understand popular music just by looking at the artists that are critically respected in retrospect and ignoring the stuff that was very popular at the time but is now looked down upon. Prime examples are Paul Whiteman in 1920s jazz and Pat Boone in the 50s.

Another recurring point: while the vast majority of music critics in the 20th century were men, women were more influential in determining what music became popular. For example, women liked dancing, so popular music tended to be dance friendly. Men danced to be around women.

The title refers to the split in popular music that occurred starting in the mid 60s into predominantly white “rock” and black “soul.” He argues that prior to that popular music was more interracial. For example, both white and black audiences liked jazz, swing, and early R&B/rock and roll.

Someone told me they had faxed me something at work. We then had to figure out where faxes go. It’s been years since I received a fax.

I read the sentence, “ I am a social worker with more than 15 years of experience in aging,” and I thought, Oh yeah? Well I have more than 50 years of experience in aging.

We have been watching Downton Abbey. Never thought I would enjoy a soap opera about the thwarted romances of aristocrats and their household employees. Ah, middle age.

I have been reading about how there are different levels of soccer/football leagues in European countries with promotion and relegation of teams between leagues and it’s blowing my little American mind.

Remember their names. #ReneeGood #AlexPretti #LorenzoSalgadoAraujo #JoanSebastianGuerrero And yes, I know there are more people who have been murdered by ICE. It's hard for me to keep up, but I'll honor all of these people.

My dentist told me that brushing without flossing is like going to the bathroom without wiping. It seems like a questionable analogy but will probably shame me into flossing more.

I really get tired of doing these portraits...because it means that ICE has murdered another person...a mom, a nurse, or in this case, a hard working man who loved his family and provided jobs for other people in his community. Fuck ICE. #LorenzoSalgadoAraujo
