Hi all! The HPC Carpentry project is doing a survey to assess the level of interest in the broader community in our efforts, as part of our incubation process with the larger Carpentries organization. It's open to anyone, and we're hoping to get replies by Nov. 24. forms.gle/XuJbbQyX47Jm...

On the messiness of in-person teaching. We see this in Carpentries workshops, too, the surprising misconceptions, the interplay between instructor and learner to even get to the question, never mind the answer.

This is a lovely & thoughtful essay on the messiness of teaching and learning, an alchemy endangered by efficiency & automation. “What A.I. can’t do is feel the shape of silence after someone says something so honest we forget we’re here to learn.” [therumpus.net]

Reminder, this is still happening!

This feels relevant to HPC educators, also. We spend a lot of time on "it allows you to scale", and try to emphasize that it's a different *kind* of resource, too. It does have limitations, and kind of feels like it's in your way sometimes.

#HPC (as a developer) predominantly means trying to find strategies to get around limitations. You can't be root or completely control the environment. Your kernel or compiler is old. On a good day, it's still a few hours to get up the point of working to innovate on the thing you are interested in.
