☀️ We left Tromsø in sunshine. After a short stop off Longyearbyen, RV Polarstern is now heading west toward Greenland – 70 days of coring and surveying the Last Ice Area to find out how the Arctic behaved when it was 2°C warmer. 🧊 #ArcticOcean #Polarstern #i2B @paleodyn.bsky.social

We dropped in on Santa Claus at the north pole this week to get our wish lists in early! To celebrate reaching 90N - the first time unaided for the Kronprins Haakon - we had ourselves a BBQ followed by a football match on the ice.

As mentioned in this interview with our cruise leader, Jochen Knies, the ease with which we reached the pole was unthinkable 30 years ago when he last visited. "Reading about it is one thing - witnessing it firsthand is something entirely different" @i2b-erc.bsky.social

One week into the @i2b-erc.bsky.social cruise and sediment cores are coming in thick and fast, guided by some fantastic sub-bottom profiler data. The question is, how old are these sediment layers?

An exciting expedition awaits! Our home for the next 5 weeks as we head into the frozen Arctic Ocean to collect new palaeo archives.

Sediment and climate model evidence indicate the Arctic Ocean maintained seasonal sea ice and open water during past ice ages, supporting marine life even in the coldest periods of the last 750,000 years. doi.org/g9sch7

phys.orgFrozen, but not sealed: Arctic Ocean remained open to life during ice ages, study suggestsFor years, scientists have debated whether a giant thick ice shelf once covered the entire Arctic Ocean during the coldest ice ages.

🧊🌊 A new article in EOS explores how the scientific community is coming together to better understand past Arctic climates – and why it matters today. This topic is at the heart of our ERC project i2B - Into The Blue, as we aim to resolve the Arctic's ancient greenhouse climate puzzle.

As the Arctic advances toward ice-free “blue” summers, understanding its past is critical, write scientists from @uitnorgesarktiske.bsky.social @i2b-erc.bsky.social @stockholm-uni.bsky.social & @uqam.ca. eos.org/science-upda...

🌍 i2B is at #EGU25! It’s been an exciting week at @egu.eu! On Mon, i2B co-PI Petra Langebroek presented our poster in the well attended session "Arctic Ocean, Surrounding Lands and Gateways across Time Scales: from Past to Future". Great discussions, great connections—Arctic science at its best! 🌊❄️

In session OS1.8, on Monday, 28 April , at 12:05–12:25, in room 1.61/62, Dr. Lohmann will give an oral presentation on the many lessons we can learn from studying past Arctic warm climates. He is one of the leaders of the exciting @i2b-erc.bsky.social project, that focuses in the Arctic!

Future research could explore a high-resolution ocean model setup including ice-shelf cavities and/or incorporating dynamic ice sheets, flexible cavity shapes, and iceberg calving. This article is essential to understand future Antarctic Ice Sheet mass loss and sea-level rise!

The study highlights the critical role of cryosphere−hydrosphere interactions in the Earth's system, particularly due to the implementation of ice cavities in the model, which reduces considerably the model mismatch with observations in relation to the Southern Ocean dynamics.

3. Antarctic ice-shelf cavities adjust the Antarctic Bottom Water formation sites and enhance Southern Ocean dynamics by introducing ice-shelf meltwater.

2. Local hydrographic and topographic conditions play a decisive role in an ice-cavity tipping point, characterized by abrupt warm-water intrusion, rapid basal-melt increases, and massive freshwater release.

They reveal that: 1. With Antarctic ice-shelf cavities, high-emission scenario projections demonstrate accelerated Antarctic basal melt and freshwater discharge, which were ignored in previous Earth System Modeling studies!

The authors implemented Antarctic ice-shelf cavities into AWI-ESM2, which in itself is a huge challenge for the climate modelling community. They conducted CMIP6 (@wcrp-cmip.org) Pre-Industrial, Historical and SSP simulations and propose this work as prototype for the upcoming CMIP7 project.

Thanks to a follower suggestion, I've added a visualization showing the mean #Arctic sea ice extent for each summer season (June-September). This can be a way of tracking whether each region is becoming seasonally ice-free. Graphic will be updated annually at: zacklabe.com/arctic-sea-i... 🌊

Friday ice update - #Arctic sea ice extent is currently the 5th lowest on record (JAXA data) • about 320,000 km² below the 2010s mean • about 720,000 km² below the 2000s mean • about 1,170,000 km² below the 1990s mean • about 1,640,000 km² below the 1980s mean Plots: zacklabe.com/arctic-sea-i... 🌊

Happy World Glacier Day!! As we enter into the International Year of #Glacier Preservation, we must: - redouble efforts to scale up political ambition for widespread emissions reductions - fight to prevent every tenth of a degree of warming - Ensure countries submit 1.5C aligned NDCs at COP30
