the freelance dream right here. editors who like your whole deal and just like, call you up to do that.

i'll tell ya one thing i miss is FREELANCE ASSIGNMENTS. i have never been a good pitch-er but i can pretty much write whatever someone tells me to and i used to have a stable of editors who liked hurling ideas at me and seeing what i came up with. the salad days of $300 assignments from MEL lol

the el niño tides are so wild! it's like, never low tide. super weird if you are accustomed to the ocean working in a certain way, and now it does not!

Daniel Swain@weatherwest.bsky.social

NWS San Diego has issued new Coastal Flood Warning for near-record/record-breaking tides and possible widespread coastal inundation in SoCal Sun-Thu. And there's no king tides or major storms in the mix yet...just elevated sea levels from extreme El Nino plus long-term warming.

I interviewed a couple of people who made a surf film with an intricate storyline and they went on and on about how much fun they had writing the film. Like, you can imagine things! And just have ideas! Anything is possible! Yes. Yes, this is the whole thing, actually.

gettin' the el niño rain thing started down here. i had to run out this morning and repark the car -- we have a carport, not a garage -- so the engine wouldn't get wet. the vw does not like rain in the engine lol

I'm seeing a bunch of high-tide flooding clips from Southern California today -- and the tide isn't even *that* high. But, thanks to the el niño heat, the sea level is effectively 18 inches higher, so a 5.6-foot tide is now like a 7-foot tide. That's gona be interesting this winter...

Good, detailed update here — with more to come — on the coming winter in California. tl;dr very wet, much raining

Daniel Swain@weatherwest.bsky.social

Just did some number crunching using latest (Oct 1) ECMWF seasonal data, and I must say that I've never seen such high predictive confidence in a very wet California winter. This is a truly extraordinary forecast amid a record-strength El Niño event. [Thread: please read to end.]

Public lands friends -- and all friends really -- tomorrow is the deadline to leave a comment on the roadless protections on public lands.

Jason Dove Mark@jasondovemark.bsky.social

Oct 6 is the deadline to submit comments on the Forest Service plan to scrap roadless protections for 44 million acres. A snippet from my comment: "A road through the woods may allow for many uses, but every road exists for a singular purpose: to serve people." www.earthisland.org/journal/inde...

my neighbor goes to the gym at some unreal hour and returns at 6am and hi there, his car honks at us all good morning to you car

i would like to have words with the car designer who decided that all of them should honk any time a driver decides to lock the doors. i do not need to hear this all day i do not

there is a lot of woo in surfing so i frequently find myself stuck in some super awkward conversations about food. the information out there is just so bad right now.

i mean, as a long-time vegetarian it is very weird to be told that i should eat beef tallow like this chunk of animal fat is so healthy 🙃

this is a rad story with some lovely photos of new england.

bioGraphic@biographic.bsky.social

"If eco-social anomie describes a societal forgetting, dam removal achieves the opposite—a collective remembering that cures our amnesia and unshifts our baselines." A beautiful @bengoldfarb.bsky.social story about the centuries-old dams choking New England's rivers, & the people setting them free

if anyone ever claims one of my dumb stories is ai, they will surely enjoy the deluge of drafting and editing files they will receive in response. why yes, my process is chaotic, why do you ask

Just re-upping this one for daylight times. If you'd like to help out with hurricane relief efforts on Kauaʻi, here are some links.

Some of y'all know that Hurricane Lowell passed hella close to Kauaʻi and has caused significant damage to the island. If you'd like to help out, here are a few local orgs doing relief work. ✨ stormkokua.com www.instagram.com/hawaiimutual... lahuifoundatio.org malamakauai.org

always love the second-wave commentary on viral stuff, like you guyssss they're just trying to get attention! why are you reacting! but in the case of the women's sports thing, man, i have just loved seeing so many strong assertions of how beautiful women's sports can be. it's been nice.

Ages ago when I wrote about cycling regularly, I switched my keyboard layout to Swiss-French to have easy access to French and German diacrits. In the short term, this was smart actually! But I never really switched back and now, what I really need most often is Hawaiian diacrits.

Thanks to Sidney Sweeney, my Instagram feed is full of extremely heartfelt celebrations of women's sports and it's lovely. So, uh, thank you naked blonde lady, I guess.

we recently resurrected our turntable that sat idle for much time, and now we get to hang out at the record store. last time, the guy behind the counter told us a story about how his band opened for the cramps at a show in la, and it was lovely.

the whole point of art is the connections it creates and the people who want to turn the whole project over to the robots are anti-human and anti-community. anyway, i love going to the bookstore and the record store and my chill little book club. more art, more community, that's where the joy is.

i do not need to take the dialect quiz it's just southern california all the way down. there's a few odd northern bits thrown in the mix, but really... i got in so much trouble from my very correct phd advisor for this, actually! but i talk like i talk, man

I have a recurring set of bike racing dreams where I'm either reporting on a race or riding in it. Ever time, I'm looking for something I can't find -- my shoes, race number, the starting line. Last night, I was a reporter at a race and I couldn't find the finish line.

meanwhile i'm super blocked on a feature i'm supposed to write, which is honestly hilarious. like, brain, you have one job! you have had one job for a long time now! you produce words when it's time to produce words. oops.

today was happy miles day which is basically the most flat 2ish hour ride i can possibly design. and, seasonally appropriate candy for the turnaround. candy corn today, natch
