I landed on the idea of using a cassette cog and reel to frame his head and radial emitting ‘sound waves’ - also partly inspired by the old BASF branding. The boxart features that classic colour scheme and design - so referencing that was a no brainer in terms of hitting the right vibe.

In terms of pose I wanted to include his iconic gun and also (the sometimes omitted) shoulder mounted cannon. I also had to consider the placement of Ravage & Laserbeak. Due to this and like the boxart I didn’t want it too dynamic, but made sure I kept the viewer below his eye line so he DOMINATES

In the this image you’ll see a shot from another part of my moodboard which focuses on Soundwaves alt mode. I knew I wanted to feature his micro cassette alt mode in some fashion - early on I experimented with a background of multiple cassettes and unspooled tape but it came off as too noisy.

In the this image you’ll see a shot from my moodboard for Soundwave himself. As I mentioned in my last post I wanted to capture the illustrated style of the characters as seen on the original 80s boxart, so keeping a keen eye on those key art piece was crucial.

There are so many iterations of toys, boxart, cartoon I cherry picked the ones i felt best represented him. I incorporated more of toy graphics than seen in most fanarts as I felt these were key to capturing the G1 era and a point of difference. Having the physical toy to hand was really useful too
