What do superhero duos and EU climate policy have in common? Both fall apart when one partner doesn't show up. 🦸 Our new staff blog looks at the duo soon teaming up to fight CO₂ emissions from Europe's road transport: the CO₂ standards for cars and vans, and the ETS2. 🔗 theicct.org/weakening-eu...

🇪🇺 Europe’s battery electric car registrations reached a 31% market share in September. 🚗⚡ This brings the year-to-date average share to 24%, a 7-percentage-point compared with the same period last year. #ICCTMarketMonitor

Did you know some of the most rapid battery EV uptake is happening outside the world’s major car markets? Our new blog has the latest global data on BEV registrations, sales shares and growth—with impressive stats from markets like Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand! 🔗 theicct.org/the-next-wav...

Europe’s dependence on oil imports is strongly intertwined with the future of the CO2 standards for cars.🇪🇺 🚗 The current CO2 standards for cars would cut the import dependency of energy used by cars and vans in Europe from 94% to 30% by 2050. But other scenarios offer diverging trajectories.👇

Petrol cars need 3x more energy than fully electric cars to cover 1 km. The ICCT’s modelling reveals the economic risks Europe faces as the European Parliament and Council negotiate the future of the CO2 standards.

The flexibilities included in the Salini report, the draft proposed by the rapporteur of the European Parliament environment committee, would only reduce it to 81%.❗ This gap stems from Europe’s structural dependence on oil imports for road transport and the efficiency gap between technologies.

🇪🇺 Europe’s battery electric car registrations spiked to a 29% market share in August. 🚗⚡ #ICCTMarketMonitor These sales represent an increase of 5 percentage points from the previous month. The two largest markets, Germany (33%) and France (38%), drove most of the growth with record shares.

From January to August, battery electric car registrations continued to grow across Europe’s largest markets except in Poland: • 🇩🇪 Germany: 27% (+9 p.p.) • 🇫🇷 France: 30% (+12 p.p.) • 🇮🇹 Italy: 8% (+3 p.p.) • 🇪🇸 Spain: 10% (+2 p.p.) • 🇵🇱 Poland: 5% (-1 p.p.) theicct.org/publication/...

NEW ANALYSIS: Charging hubs in a small share of locations could cover most energy demand from electric trucks across Europe. 🚛 The ICCT and @fraunhoferisi.bsky.social have quantified charging demand from battery electric trucks across the EU, Norway, Switzerland, and the UK between 2030 and 2045. ⚡

The European Commission has proposed letting carmakers count the emissions savings of certain renewable fuels toward their 2035 CO₂ targets. This is not without risks: it could effectively weaken targets, keep combustion cars on the roads, and raise fuel prices. ⚠️⬇️ theicct.org/publication/...

⚡🚗 🇪🇺 Electric vehicles accounted for 27% of all cars produced in the European Union in 2025. The share has tripled since 2020, when the European car industry suffered a downturn in production due to the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since then, EV production has grown, reaching 3MIL units in 2025, while combustion engine car production shrunk from 91% to 72% of the total EU car production. Fully electric car production is driving the shift. On average, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) made up 19% of cars produced in the EU.

🚨NEW: Electric cars are 33% cheaper to drive than gasoline in Europe, while electric trucks are approaching cost parity with diesel. Our second EV Transition Check✅ finds that, as battery costs decrease and fuel prices remain high, EVs are becoming the most cost-effective vehicle choice in Europe.

🚛Battery electric and diesel truck models could reach total cost of ownership parity in the long-haul segment as soon as 2030. 🇩🇪Germany has already crossed that line: thanks to road toll exemptions, a long-haul electric truck already costs 11% less to own and operate than a diesel truck.

🚗🔌 With the start of the oil crisis in February 2026, the gap has widened further. In early 2026, the energy costs of combustion engine cars rose by 12%–36%, while those of battery electric cars remained largely unchanged.

The European Commission’s proposed amendments to the CO2 standards for cars and vans include a mechanism for “low-carbon steel” credits. How can this mechanism be designed to to support a fossil-free EU steel industry? 🚗🇪🇺 We've explored this question our latest brief ⬇️ theicct.org/publication/...

🇪🇺 Europe’s battery electric car registrations recorded a 24% market share in July. For January to July 2026, the market share was 22%, a 5-percentage-point increase compared with the same period in 2025. 🚗⚡ #ICCTMarketMonitor Learn more👉 theicct.org/publication/...

🚛 Outside China, electric truck sales remained relatively slow, reaching about 41,000 units sold. Sales in some regions like the EU and India are picking up speed thanks to favorable economics, policies, and wider model availability.

🇨🇳 China accounted for close to 90% of the overall global zero-emission sales, with heavy and medium truck sales doubling for second year in row and reaching a nearly 30% market share.

🚛🚌 Truck and bus enthusiasts👇 Tomorrow, the ICCT will launch an annual report covering truck and bus sales across 34 countries, representing 80% of all commercial vehicle sales globally. It will be paired with an interactive dashboard with quarterly updates to explore market trends. Stay tuned!
