Fortunately, Yanina wasn't at home — her outlet arranges for journalists to stay at secure hotels during heavy nights of bombardment. She's a fierce investigative reporter, and also super pleasant to work with (this can be a rare combination). She's done tons of great work and will do more.

I quoted her briefly in my story from this winter about what Ukraine's journalists endured during the cold and the blackouts. “At my apartment I have an hour-and-a-half of electricity per day,” she said then. The things Russia puts Ukrainians through. And for what? www.occrp.org/en/feature/r...

British intelligence says nearly 500k Russian soldiers have been killed. They don’t say how they arrived at this figure. Previous estimates have been lower — CSIS and Meduza estimated between 250-350K. But those methodologies are known to be undercounts. www.gchq.gov.uk/news/directo...

Whatever the true number is, and it’s rising by the hundreds every day, you have to go back to Josef Stalin to find a Russian leader who has massacred as many of his own people.

(Also, keep in mind that if you add the severely wounded, total casualties are probably over a million by most estimates. That’s roughly 5 times more than the United States, a much more populous country, lost in Vietnam.)

Described as “cognitive strikes” against the West, they include both “online disinformation” and real-world elements: anti-Muslim and anti-Jewish stunts in France and Germany, fake stories targeting Zelenskyy and the PM of Armenia, plans to blame Ukrainian extremists for public vandalism, and more.

Anyone familiar with Roman Anin, publisher of Russian investigative outlet Important Stories, knows that he's careful to a fault. He doesn't overdramatize or exaggerate. Still, he calls their latest scoop "one of the most important pieces of news about Russia in recent times." What's the news? 👇

I’m seeing some criticism online of one claim in the report — that former Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu is going to overthrow Putin. “Ha ha, the widely despised Shoigu, really!?” Well, they should read more carefully, because that’s not what it says.

Shoigu is mentioned in a single short section of the 3-page document, which describes him as a “destabilizing actor.” It doesn’t make any claims about him leading a coup. It also openly acknowledges his weakened position.

But maybe the most striking detail to me is the level of inside access the report attests to. It gives a detailed account of a top-level meeting, convened by Putin in December, in which top security officials blamed each other for their failure to protect senior military figures from assassination.

It’s simply a remarkable level of access for a Western intelligence agency, if accurate of course. You can read the IStories version here, which has the full text. (Reporters independently verified some of the information, so this is not just blind trust.) istories.media/en/stories/2...

Staffers working near Putin are no longer allowed to use mobile phones or take public transport, the report says — part of a new set of extreme security measures. Putin and family have stopped visiting their residences in the Moscow region, and he's made no appearances at military sites this year.

Big scoop here 👇

BREAKING: Unprecedented security measures have been instituted in the Kremlin in recent weeks as Vladimir Putin anticipates a possible coup or assassination attempt — including a drone strike from within. That's according to a European intel agency: www.occrp.org/en/news/secu...

Other participants appear to have been pro-Russian from the beginning. For them, the program offered a way to channel those sympathies into clubs, media work, and militarized patriotic activities.

Since becoming a “Young Correspondent,” one girl from occupied Henichesk seems to have undergone a radical transformation. In this video, a year before the Russian invasion, she wears a traditional Ukrainian embroidered shirt and extols the virtues of the Ukrainian language.

A few years later — her town now under Russian occupation — she’s receiving a grant from the Russian government to develop “patriotic education” in occupied areas. “I have confidence in Vladimir Putin and am ready … to build the Russia of the future,” she says in one video.

The “Young Correspondents” program and the larger Yunarmia movement have long been active in Russia, but they’ve quickly been established in newly conquered areas of Ukraine. Internal documents show many dozens of participants across occupied territory.

Reporters traced the stories of a few of them. Many are from small towns where there's not much else to do. Soon after the Russian tanks roll through, Yunarmia sets up shop at a local school. Through slick presentations, it promises community and connection to a larger vision.

This screenshot from the online training module shows Ksenia Barladyan, head of the Yunarmia press service, about to give a talk about “patriotic SSM strategies.” “Don't forget to cover events aimed at supporting the special military operation,” she says.

Participants can also travel to Moscow for a three-day annual “media forum,” where they hear lectures by frontline soldiers, attend infosessions, and see the sights of the Russian capital.

Thanks for highlighting this news. Just to clarify, while yesterday's committee vote was unfortunate, it is just one step: a full House vote is yet to come, and no repeal legislation has even been introduced in the Senate. CTA is far from done, and we will keep defending it every step of the way.
