The dual policy for LLM use featured two policies for LLM use, conservative or permissive. All reviewers were matched with a policy consistent with their choice.

Many were curious or concerned that choosing a dual policy of LLM use would result in disparate outcomes between the two policies. The punchline: the policy choice did not affect the score distribution or decisions in a statistically significant way.

A few policies to address growth: PCs chose to avoid caps or fees. They instead chose to have a concurrent submission policy (must disclose), and modified the reciprocal reviewing policy. Other steps were taken in an attempt to maintain review quality.

Some measures to address the increased use of LLMs included: a paper assistant tool to help authors, checks for hallucinated references, and a dual policy for LLM use in reviewing.

LLMs made up 17.6% of all accepted papers. While the top subject area remained stable from last year, it seems like applications generally became more popular.

The biggest challenge of the ICML 2026 review process was the number of submissions. It doubled in size! The acceptance rate remained roughly stable.

The program features a ton of posters, oral presentations, invited talks, workshops, tutorials, socials, and more!

Progress of submissions in the review process over time. 6,552 papers were accepted (26.6% acceptance rate), 4,257 were withdrawn, 939 were desk rejected, and 12,913 were otherwise rejected.

#ICML2026 had 24,661 submissions from 76,159 authors. Submissions were reviewed by 17,886 reviewers, 1,728 ACs, and 251 SACs, as well as 56 ethics reviewers.

Closing out the technical program for the day, we have Susan Athey (@susanathey.bsky.social) giving an invited talk on causal inference and transformer models.

Tutorials and the expo are done: on to day one of the main conference! Highlights today are the plenary talks by Pascale Fung (starting now!) and Susan Athey (4 PM). The latter is followed by opening remarks and the welcome reception.

We have sent out notifications for the 168 oral presentations at #ICML2026 (159 main track, 9 position track). These were selected from those spotlight papers where authors chose to present in-person at the conference. All orals will be live in Seoul (12 mins, no remote option).
