Great thread about the Brasil election from someone who watched it all unfold. Very important points about countering the "algorithmic divide-and-conquer" strategy the global alt-right abuses.

Genuinely I don't know that it comes across to people who haven't been here to watch how almost unbelievable this was, just people taking something that looked impossible and dragging it kicking and screaming all the way to inevitability.

Since right-wing grifters all over the world like to make up claims about how migrants "cost us all money" and "eat up our benefits", here's a great analysis from known left-wing think-tank *checks notes* Cato Institute on why it's complete bullshit and it's actually the other way around.

David J. Bier@davidjbier.bsky.social

The White House Council of Economic Advisers claims mass deportation pays for itself because illegal immigrants impose such huge fiscal costs. What are these costs? It doesn't say, so I figured out what CEA did to invent them... www.cato.org/blog/white-h...

It's impossible to loathe these guys enough.

💥WSJ reports that Trump wants Viktor Orbán as UN secretary-general, with Russian and Chinese backing. Back in May, I reported that MAGA circles were already eyeing a top UN job for Orbán—then a DSG post to shield him from prosecution. More on @vsquare.bsky.social: vsquare.org/goulash-orba...

Does anyone from Legal Bluesky know when we could expect the en banc verdict on 25-5452 (Boasberg's contempt probe)?

You know what the sad thing about the whole Vivek Ramaswamy / Amy Acton debacle is? On That Site, there are a lot of people who go to profiles such as this one: x.com/vimal4USA/st... to express their disgust, only to follow that up with "you Indians are disgusting". Really? Countering...

So, I decided to play around and vibecode myself a simulation of the US midterms based on early voting data, because why not. I can share if someone wants, but the key thing right now is that the early vote says *absolutely nothing* because the critical data is missing.

And that critical data is: how will the electorates vote. I made various scenarios regarding splits and for example, Dems win Florida (which is the worst state in the 5 I have data from) with a Ind +40 / Dem Loyalty 94% / Rep Loyalty 90% split, while an ind +30 / Dem Loyalty 94% / Rep Loyalty 90%...

...split is dead even. In other words, people can try convincing you that you can learn something from the early votes, but that mostly has the confidence level of inferring from tea leaves.

This is the sick depravation that Trump and Musk are enabling. Make no mistake, they own every piece of it.

Jay in Kyiv@jayinkyiv.bsky.social

With Trump's removal of Starlink, Russians are now hunting cars full of people in Kyiv, using jet drones for which Ukraine's interceptors no longer function to stop. Three people murdered an hour ago in southern Kyiv, with six others injured, three of which are children.

I don't think Americans en masse understand what's happening to their country right now, and it's dead simple. Your country is being governed by a bunch of thugs. A mafia, if you prefer. The only thing thugs are interested in is grabbing more power and more money. So they're doing that.

Why are they doing deals with Russia, want to do deals with North Korea, are doing deals with the Middle East petrostates? Very simple - those are countries where money can be transferred back and forth in an untraceable and unenforceable manner. Those are also countries where corruption will...

...get you everywhere. So, they're basically paying with the entire might of the US - both hard power and soft power - to buy themselves assets that cannot be taken from them later. They're privatizing the entire economy of the US. It's *that simple*.

No to mamy Polkę w finale w Wuhan :) pytanie, czy przeważy "oaza spokoju" Maja czy "wulkan emocji" Iga :)

This is a good rebuttal, though I fully understand (and sympathize with) @stevevladeck.bsky.social 's points. But the raw reality is that (a) the US political system is skewed towards the right wing and (b) the right wing is getting increasingly dangerous and unhinged. There's no easy way around.

Micah@rincewind.run

Steve is a good faith operator, so - in good faith, some answers but fundamentally what it comes down to with me is that this conservative supermajority makes real progressive governance impossible, and it will hold its power forever (through strategic retirement) unless stripped of that power

When Republicans post maps of the US colored all red, there's a rebuttal that "land doesn't vote". But that's not true! In fact, one of the key reasons why Republicans hold power is that land (or namely, random patches of land called states) does vote and for that reason North Dakota has the same...

...number of senators as California. And the Senate has the power to block everything, including, most importantly, impeachment - with a just a qualified minority.

So, he's the only president to ever take the dementia test, he travels with an array of doctors and those doctors are precluded from saving other people's lives because they have to cater to him personally - and he's bragging about it. Great guy.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump: "I'm the only one that took the test -- the aptitude test or whatever. Every time I do a physical, I do a mental test. And I aced it. Where's my doctor? I travel w/ more doctors than any human being. If people get sick in the audience, they leave them alone. They call them collateral damage."

A więc maski opadły.

So let me get this straight - the Trump admin has failed to implement any decent policy, the Russia oil deal has backfired spectacularly, so they're going for *checks notes* trying to denaturalize a sitting member of Congress based on a conspiracy theory? Wow, and there's still 20 days left...

Incredible. It seems that the Russia deal was already finalized over a month ago. The announcement only happens as the first tanker is *literally about to hit the American coast*.

*Taps sign* and we're not even halfway there...

Piotr Wilkin@ilintar.org

Let me risk a prediction: there is going to be a blue wave. Reason? Trump has gone so far off the deep end he's making decisions that poll 20-80 and he's worked hard to make all GOP candidates associate with him. And his mental state is not going to improve, only deteriorate further.

The transformation of the US into a mafia state has entered its final stages. This isn't fascism - fascism, as evil as it is, still tries to advance some national goals. This is a mafia state - only the people at the top, their literal family and henchmen benefit and only their interests matter.

Of course Reichsbischof Barron has not said a word about the plan to publicly televise an execution. Not that I expected any different.

I think I just understood a certain phenomenon: why did so many old-school feminists get captured by the right-wing movement, especially the anti-trans hysteria? It might be counterintuitive, but I think the signs are there - a lot of the feminist discourse about rape is, if you think about...

...it, very *right-wing coded*. It's fear-driven, it essentializes the perpetrators, focuses on retribution, rarely talks of resocialization, puts blame mostly on individual men instead of social structures... a lot of the typical indicators of "vigilante justice".

It's hardly a wonder, then, that some women who were invested into this discourse got captured pretty easily by getting convinced that eg. trans rights were a means for sexual predators to evade responsibility and give them greater access to victims.

Okay, this is going to be an unpopular take because Trump has said a lot of despicable things lately, but I do think the "take out our cities" *is* being taken out of context - in his demented way, he's talking about a hypothetical - "let's assume they nuke San Diego or LA".

It's his way of saying his dumb war is stopping Iran from nuking American cities - a point he's been hammering on and on - so I do think it's a fair reading.
